~ Baloo to Mowgli.

Baloo is the one of the deuteragonists of the 2018 Netflix live-action adventure drama film Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, based on the late Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.

He is a firm but fair Himalayan brown bear who teaches Mowgli and the wolf cubs the laws of the jungle. Although his training methods can be rough, he tries his best to teach Mowgli into becoming a wolf.

He was portrayed in motion capture by the film's director Andy Serkis.

Biography[]

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle[]

To be added

Personality[]

Baloo in this film is much closer to his original incarnation in the books by Rudyard Kipling, and is by far the most accurate depiction of the character. Unlike his Disney counterparts, who are warm, laid back and easy-going, Baloo in this film is strict, commanding and authoritative, much like a drill sergeant. As the teacher of the wolf cubs, he is severe and serious. He is even shown to smack cubs who are out of line.

Baloo, however, is not heartless. Behind his gruff exterior, he cares deeply for his students, especially Mowgli. He was furious with Bagheera when he sabotaged Mowgli's chance at victory. He also did not hesitate to rush to Mowgli's rescue when he was abducted by the monkeys.

Appearance[]

In contrast to his book incarnation from the original novel by Rudyard Kipling, this version of Baloo is realistic in appearance due to him being a live-action version of his original counterpart of the same name, being depicted as a very large, muscular Himalayan brown bear. However, it is shown that Baloo looks scarred and rugged as his entire head is strangely devoid of fur, has a beat-up face, disheveled fur and even a prominent snaggletooth for a lower right fang. He also resembles a (further misplaced) grizzly bear due to his dark fur and hunched back, even though Himalayan brown bears usually have bright, cream-colored fur.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike his Disney counterpart, this version of Baloo is portrayed as a stern teacher meets drill sergeant nasty, harsh and demanding with Mowgli and instead has a more deep, grating voice. Despite his gruff and stern behavior, he truly cares about Mowgli and wants to see him succeed.
  • When compared to Bagheera and the wolves, Baloo looks like an antagonist because of his bald head, beat-up face and disheveled fur, but despite this, he is still a noble member of the pack.
  • Black Panther and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, both of which Andy Serkis starred in, came out in 2018.
  • He is currently one of the eleven characters of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book universe portrayed by an actor with a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being played by Andy Serkis (Ulysses Klaue). The others are Christian Bale (Gorr the God Butcher), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Cate Blanchett (Hela), Bill Murray (Krylar), Ben Kingsley (Trevor Slattery), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Lupita Nyong'o (Nakia), Garry Shandling (Senator Stern) and Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan).
  • During the scene where Mowgli and Baloo discover the mutilated corpse of a cow, Baloo only notices it when he takes a direct look at it. In real-life, bears have some of the most excellent senses of smell in the animal kingdom, so Baloo might have picked up the scent.
