Balthus von Albrecht is a major character in the 2019 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses and its 2022 spin-off sequel Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. In Three Houses, he is one of the four titular main protagonists of the Cindered Shadows/Ashen Wolves campaign.

The oldest and largest member of the Ashen Wolves House, Balthus is Leicester nobility but he walked away from that life in order to protect his family from his cruel stepmother. A loud and very challenge-seeking man, he is the self proclaimed King of Grappling and always loves having a good fight. While he is considered a ruffian by many, and he doesn't help himself in this aspect as he's constantly breaking laws and taking on increasingly greater debt which in turn has him constantly hounded by bounty hunters, Balthus is a honest and kind person, and never hesitates to protect his loved ones. He's also a close friend of Hilda and Holst Gorneril.

In English, he is voiced by Aaron Hedrick. In Japanese, he's voiced by Subaru Kimura.

Personality[]

Balthus is loud, rowdy and hearty. He loves fighting and (justifiably) believes himself to be one of the greatest fighters in Fodland. Despite having a very notorious reputation for being unreliable and a rogue constantly getting himself into deeper and deeper trouble, he is a stalwart ally who will always be there for his friends when it matters. He cares very deeply about the people he's close to, shown when he willingly stepped down and abandoned the life of nobility, granting his younger half brother his inherited title in order to protect his family from the potential wrath of his cruel stepmother. He is also simultaneously not too bright and yet incredibly perceptive. While he's not good with battlefield strategy or even common sense at times, he's able to piece mysteries together remarkably swiftly, shown when he was able to work out Claude's history and who his mother is.

He fancies himself a lady's man and a strong drinker, and is notably much more mature than other students given he is much older than them all. He is also surprisingly very religious and is a devoted follower of the Goddess.

He has a habit of calling friend and foe alike 'pal'.

At 26 years old when first encountered, he is by far the oldest student at the Officer's Academy.
- He is also the only student to enroll a second time, as he had already graduated several years beforehand.
Balthus' default final class, the War Monk, was scrapped in Three Hopes.
