Heroine Overview

Authority should derive from the consent of the governed, not from the threat of force!
~ Barbie to Lotso.

Barbara Millicent Roberts, better known as just Barbie, is a supporting character in the Toy Story franchise.

Barbie is an inanimate toy, originally belonging to Molly Davis. After being donated to Sunnyside Daycare, Barbie griefs and believes her only purpose has been destroyed. But when Barbie meets Ken, she immediately finds happiness.

She is voiced by Jodi Benson, who also voiced Ariel in The Little Mermaid franchise. She also voices Barbie’s Toy Story 2 counterpart, Tour Guide Barbie, along with all the other Barbies in the film series itself.

Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known about Barbie prior to her appearance in Toy Story 3.

Barbie was Molly’s toy and possibly her last Barbie before being donated to Sunnyside Daycare. It is unknown when she got her, or how long Molly had owned her.

Toy Story 2[]

The morning after Andy's toys return home, three of Molly's Barbies are seen providing background vocals for a fixed Wheezy as he sings "You've Got a Friend in Me" in celebration of Woody being back. It is inferred one of the Barbie’s might be the Toy Story 3 Barbie.

Toy Story 3[]

Molly owned a Barbie doll for many years, but when she got older, she eventually tossed her into a box for donations for Sunnyside Daycare. As Andy's Toys sneak inside the box and go to Sunnyside with her, Barbie cries since she couldn't believe that her owner threw her away (although she mentioned that they have been growing apart for years). When Woody describes the daycare as a "sad, lonely place for washed-up old toys who have no owners", Barbie starts to burst again.

When the toys arrive at Sunnyside, Barbie, alongside Hamm and Slinky, shakes hands with Stretch. She then meets Sunnyside's ruler, Lotso, and his minion, Ken. Ken and Barbie fall in love at first sight, so much to the fact Ken even invites Barbie to come live with him in his Dreamhouse.

That evening, Buzz Lightyear leaves the Caterpillar room to talk to Lotso, before he watches Barbie and Ken exchanging the word "I love you". The two dolls were about to kiss until Ken is dragged away by Twitch to take him to their secret hideout in the vending machine and do some gambling. Later, that night, Barbie exits Ken's Dreamhouse to look for Ken, and discovers that he and Lotso's gang are imprisoning her friends. This causes Barbie to get angry at Ken, and she immediately breaks up with him and snatches her scarf she gave to him. She then turns herself to be locked up alongside Andy's Toys.

The next day, Barbie and the toys are overjoyed to see Woody after he returned to Sunnyside. They then make up a plan to escape the daycare. That night, after Ken and a brainwashed Buzz take role call, Barbie tricks Ken into freeing her by faking her tears and how she wants to be with him again. Ken, after a bit of hesitation, tells Barbie to do what he says in exchange for freeing her.

After they arrive in Ken's Dreamhouse, Barbie is surprised to see so many outfits in Ken's closet. Ken tells her that no one appreciates his clothes, but Barbie assures him that she would appreciate his clothes if he models a few of his outfits for her. Hearing this, Ken shows off all of his outfits to Barbie. When Ken shows off his kung-fu outfit, Barbie uses this chance to ambush him from behind. She then angrily demands Ken to tell her what Lotso did to Buzz and how she can switch him back. Ken initially tells her that she can't make him talk, but he then gets frightened by her angry face and decides to let her at least try.

Barbie then ties up Ken in a paddleball paddle and tortures him by ripping off his outfits, and she will not stop unless Ken tells her the truth. At first, Ken tries to keep his cool, but he is unable to bear it when he sees Barbie about to rip his Nehru jacket. In the end, he finally ends up revealing that Lotso used a Buzz Lightyear instruction manual and switched Buzz to Demo mode. When Barbie asks him where the manual is, Ken tells her that the Bookworm has it in the library. Barbie then disguises herself as Ken using his spacesuit and receives the manual from the Bookworm. She was nearly caught by him when he saw "Ken" wearing high heels, but he got disgusted and ignored "him" anyway.

Barbie reaches Woody and Slinky and shows them the Buzz Lightyear manual, and they go to Hamm and Rex so that they could reset Buzz. However, Buzz escapes from the storage bin Hamm and Rex trapped him in and tries to warn Lotso and his gang. Hamm and Rex are able to recapture him, and as Woody and Slinky hold him down, Barbie quickly uses a screwdriver to open Buzz's back and switch him back to Play mode. However, the toys accidentally switch Buzz into Spanish mode instead. They had no time to switch him again, so the toys just run with Buzz in his Spanish mode for now.

Just as the toys were about to escape through a garbage chute, Lotso blocks their escape route. Lotso tells Andy's Toys to give up on their owner Andy and come back to Sunnyside with him, but Jessie angrily tells him that she would never live with a liar and bully like him. Barbie, supporting her opinion, tells Lotso that "authority should derive from the consent of the governed, not from the threat of force." Lotso then tells Stretch to push the toys into the dumpster.

Just then, Ken stops Lotso, much to Barbie's surprise. Lotso tells Ken that there are millions of Barbie dolls, but Ken protests, saying there's only one Barbie for him. This makes Barbie happy. Lotso angrily tells Ken to join her as he tosses him to Andy's Toys, and the toys manage to help him get up to the chute. Barbie hugs Ken, happy that he redeemed. After Lotso is thrown into the dumpster, the toys are about to escape Sunnyside for good, until Woody gets dragged inside the garbage truck with Lotso. When Andy's Toys get loaded into the truck, Barbie tries to go with them, but is stopped by Ken. She could only watch in horror as her friends fall into the truck and get taken away to the dumpster.

In the credits, Barbie and Ken become the new rulers of Sunnyside, and turn the daycare into a true paradise for toys.

Hawaiian Vacation[]

Barbie is first seen along with Ken as they unzip Bonnie's backpack and emerge into Bonnie's room. There, they meet Woody, Buzz, and other toys, but Ken becomes depressed when he finds out that he and Barbie have ended up in Bonnie's room and missed their "flight" to Hawaii. After Ken sinks back into Bonnie's backpack in great depression, Barbie reveals to Woody and the others the vacation plans she and Ken have formulated for each other. Soon Woody and his friends recreate "Hawaii" for the couple, such as deep-sea diving, guided nature walk, and an entertaining dinner. After their various adventures in "Hawaii," Ken and Barbie share their first kiss in the snow at sunrise, as Woody and his friends watch through a window, but then the two fall into the snow, prompting the toys to come to their rescue by digging them out and releasing them from a block of ice.

Toy Story 4[]

Barbie and two other counterparts briefly appears in the prologue of Toy Story 4, helping Woody, Jessie, Bo Peep, and Buzz save RC from the rain.

Trivia[]

Great Shape Barbie

The original "Great Shape Barbie" doll from 1983.

  • According to Mattel toy line history, Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.
  • All the Barbie dolls who appear in the series are voiced by Jodi Benson, famous for voicing Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid franchise. She also voiced Barbie in many commercials for the doll, and on CD-ROM games with the character.
    • Coincidentally, each of their live-action versions were first officially presented in 2023 via theatrical releases.
  • Barbie was meant to appear in the original Toy Story as Woody's girlfriend, in place of Bo Peep. However, Mattel would not allow the use of Barbie because they didn't want her to be given her own personality (it was important to them that the girls who buy the toys would imagine what Barbie is like themselves, thus making the toy unique to each girl). Also, they didn't think it would succeed being the first computer-animated film. After Toy Story was a success, Mattel decided to put that policy aside and allowed her to appear in Toy Story 2, and also with her boyfriend Ken in Toy Story 3.
    • In addition, her personality was intended to be modeled after Sarah Connor from the Terminator franchise, even saying, "Come with me if you want to live," when she rescued Woody and Buzz from Sid's mansion, with Woody remarking in reply that he "Wish[ed] [Woody] was anatomically correct."
    • Incidentally, Toy Story 4 reveals that this Barbie and Bo Peep were both previously owned by Molly Davis together.
  • The Barbie in Toy Story 3 is based on the real life 1983 Great Shape Barbie toy. It was also reproduced to include the accessories of a jacket or a play Walkman. Mattel also included a separate self-assembly workout center.
    • The phrase, "Love your leg warmers," which Ken says to Barbie in their first meeting, was used in the original Great Shape Barbie toy commercial.
  • All Barbie‘s in the series are different characters. A lot of people assumed Tour Guide Barbie was the same Barbie who appeared in Toy Story 3.
  • The two other Barbies that appear with her in Toy Story 4 have a resemblance to the dolls Christie and Teresa, who were Barbie's friends in the Mattel franchise.
