Barry Egan is the main protagonist of the 2002 romantic comedy drama movie Punch-Drunk Love. He is a bathroom supply business man who lived a lonely and sad life due to him being berated about his seven sisters.
He is portrayed by Adam Sandler, who also played Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Zohan Dvir, Dave Buznik, Sam Brenner, Q*bert in Pixels, Archie Moses, Donny Berger, Little Nicky, Davey Stone, Whitey Duvall, Longfellow Deeds, Hubie Dubois, Sandy Wexler, Tommy Dunson Stockburn, Chuck Levine, Robbie Hart, Charlie Fineman, Lenny Feder, Bobby Boucher, Dracula in the first 3 Hotel Transylvania movies, Paul Crewe, and Leo.
Personality[]
Barry is lonely businessman who suffered from the constant criticism he gets from his seven sisters. He calls a phone sex line to curb his loneliness which jeopardized his romance with Lena. Barry hated himself and was treated pourly by his own sisters who would always pick on him. Owning his own business got him nowhere and is often shown to be wrathful despite having violent outbursts whenever his unkind sisters bringing up of when he was a child and broke a sliding glass door after insulting him calling him a "gay boy". He is often considered strange considering that he often very calm throughout the film and would always wear the same suit. He often spends his days collecting coupons and getting discounts on chocolate putting due an error on the packages.
Biography[]
Barry was walking out of his factory and saw a small piano dropped off at the street from a van. He manages to take the piano and puts it into his office. He gets a call from one of his sisters about a party tonight. His friend Elizabeth insists on him going to the party to meet a girl she knows. Later that day, Barry arrives at the party and gets picked on by his sisters calling him a "gay boy" like when he was a child. Growing fed up with being insulted by his sisters he has a violent breakdown by smashing and kicking their sliding glass doors.
Barry returns home and finds an advertisement for Phone Sex Line. Barry calls a phone sex line to die down his loneliness. He gives the phone sex line his credit card number and his social security number and gets in contact with a woman named Georgia. They talk and had a conversation about each other. The next day, Barry gets a call from Georgia and was asked for money he respectfully says that he can't pay for it and hangs up. When he arrives at his factory he cancels his credit card before he gets phone-stalked by Georgia many times as Elizabeth tries get Barry to be with Lena.
Lena asks Barry if he can got out her before he gives her his phone number and address. They go out on the date at a restaurant. After he left her apartment Dean's goons kidnap him and forced him to get the money but only got half of it. Barry runs away from the goons as they continued to hunt him down. Barry takes a flight to Hawaii to meet Lena. They finally meet and they kiss before they have a romantic time together in Hawaii.
After they leave Hawaii Dean's goons drive into his car hurting Lena before gets out the car and uses a tire iron and begins to beat Dean's goons down. Lena ends up in the hospital. Later angry, Barry calls Georgia and asks to speak to the supervisor. Dean answers and after arguing a while, Barry shouts at Dean to go fuck himself, Dean offended threats Barry. Barry gets in contact with Dean on the phone they have an argument. Barry runs his way to the hospital and finds out Lena is out the hospital and manages to find the address to D&D Mattress in Utah. He finds Dean getting a haircut and wanted to speak to him face to face to "That's that". Barry tells him that he has so much strength in him before he leaves before Dean calls him a "pervert" one more time but Barry yells "DIDN'T I WARN YOU!" Dean scared apologizes saying "th...that's that" before walking away.
He runs away to Lena's apartment with the piano in hands and apologizes for all the trouble and regains his love with Lena.
