~ Basil to Sunny before their fight. |
Basil is one the two deuteragonists (Alongside Kel) of the OMORI franchise.
Once a kindhearted young boy, a tragic turn of events left him a miserable shell of his former self. Depending on the choices of the player, Basil may redeem himself for his past traumatic actions, or fall from grace through an unprecedented and shocking end.
Appearance[]
In the real world, Basil is a boy of fair complexion and below average height. He possesses teal blue eyes, blonde hair and has a single pink flower tucked behind his left ear (though, in some official art, the flower is white). In the game, Basil wears a green knitted sweater vest over a white button-up shirt, beige shorts, and black shoes.
His headspace appearance has a blue dreamy hue to it, and he also has green eyes and hair. He sports a full headdress made of flowers, some overall shorts over a simple yellow T-shirt. Like many of Sunny’s friends, he goes barefoot in Headspace.
Personality[]
Before the horrific incident, Basil was a shy boy with heavy social anxiety, but nevertheless was fairly optimistic and humble. He was very kindhearted to his friends and cherished them greatly. Basil enjoyed taking pictures as a way of capturing memories with his friends.
After the accident, Basil's shy nature develops into serious social sensitivity. The boy becomes increasingly nihilistic, spiralling into severe depression from the guilt of his actions influencing the aftermath of the tragic event. He is heavily attached to the old ways of his life and his physical belongings, such as his photo album, making him an easy target for bullying. Polly mentions that Basil frequently shuts himself in the bathroom to overthink and re-live his destructive trauma, unbeknownst to anyone else.
Despite his lack of a relationship with his parents, Basil is significantly loving towards his grandmother. Even in her twilight years, Basil continues to support her with Polly's help. The implied death of his grandmother breaks the boy, and is the final catalyst for an already miserable Basil to give up on life, no longer having the will to continue living.
Background[]
Not much is known about Basil's childhood, but it is confirmed he was born on February 18th to unnamed parents. His parents were consistently away from home due to being "too busy", so he lived with his grandmother. Sometime before the age of 12, Basil met Aubrey, who introduced him to Sunny, Kel, Hero and Mari, whom he befriended. He was a happy child, enjoying taking photos, making photo albums, reading and taking care of flowers.
Tragedy struck on the day of a musical recital for Mari and Sunny, when Basil went to the siblings' home and witnessed the manslaughter of Mari at the hands of Sunny. When Basil realised Mari had been killed, he devised a plan to frame her death as suicide by tying a noose using a skipping rope and hanging her corpse from a tree in Sunny's backyard. Basil became traumatised from seeing Mari's lifeless hair scattered across the floor, a sight that would eventually develop into his Something.
Following Mari's death, the friends split up, prompting Basil to spiral into depression.
4 years later[]
Three days left[]
Basil is seen for the first time in four years being bullied by a now delinquent Aubrey and her new friends. After being saved by Sunny and Kel, Basil is escorted home by the boys, but Basil informs his old friends that Aubrey had stolen his photo album, prompting Kel and Sunny to search for Aubrey in an attempt to retrieve it.
That afternoon, Kel and Sunny stay over at Basil's house for dinner, having taken back his photo album. Some photos are missing, but Kel assures Basil they'll be retrieved. Basil gives Sunny his album out of nostalgia for their childhood, Over dinner, Basil learns Sunny is moving out in three days, leading to him running to the bathroom to weep. Sunny enters to find Basil's Something re-emerging, and retreats despite Basil's protests to "not leave him again",
Two days left[]
Basil is briefly seen at the park in the morning, making an excuse for his bathroom break last night. He passes on hanging out with Kel and Sunny.
Later, Basil returns to the secret hideout where he and his friends used to gather, but it had been overrun by Aubrey and the hooligans. Once again saved by Kel and Sunny, Basil approaches a distraught and delusional Aubrey after the hooligans withdraw, only to be shoved into the lake by Aubrey out of frustration. Thankfully, he is rescued by Hero before he drowns and taken home to recover.
One day left[]
Basil is not present in the morning due to him visiting his grandmother, who had been rushed to intensive care. He returns home in the afternoon, but immediately locks himself in his room, unresponsive as a result of his grandmother's presumed death. As the reunited friends go to sleep at Basil's house, Basil concludes his journey is no longer worth traversing, and decides to take his own life. From here, depending on the player's actions, Basil either succeeds in killing himself, or is saved by Sunny.
Death (Neutral Endings)[]
If the player chooses to return to sleep, Basil will succeed in committing suicide. Every witness is equally as distraught as they are forced to re-live the agony they suffered from discovering Mari's death. Basil's corpse is surrounded by his Something, indicating he has lost the fight against his trauma.
Final Confrontation (Good and Bad Endings)[]
If the player chooses to save Basil, Sunny will enter Basil's room to find him staring out the window, as his Something begins to slowly manifest. Basil becomes increasingly hysterical as he presumably plots to murder Sunny, then take out himself, under the delusional justification of destroying their Somethings. In the peniultimate battle of the game, Basil and Sunny fight to the near-death, with Basil stabbing Sunny's right eye. Eventually, both boys faint from exhaustion. The other people in the house soon wake up and discover the aftermath of the deadly confrontation, prompting Basil and Sunny to be rushed to hospital.
Basil's fate in the Bad Ending is left ambiguous, but he is confirmed to survive in the Good Ending.
Reconciliation (Good Ending) and Closure (True Ending)[]
Basil is visited by Kel, Hero and a redeemed Aubrey in hospital just as Sunny enters the room and confesses their guilt to the reunited friends. In the True Ending, Basil is seen waking up in a post credits scene. He is deeply scarred by the violent battle, but is alive and recovering. Discovering Sunny had revealed the truth, Basil shares his first genuine smile for the first time in four years with his best friend. The boys' Somethings fade away - they have finally redeemed themselves and achieved the closure they so desperately needed, and can now move on.
Trivia[]
- Due to his actions and dialogue in the game, Basil is perceived to be homosexual by some Omori fans. However, there is no definitive confirmation whether he is gay or not.
