“ | My name is Bruce Wayne. When I was ten, my parents were murdered in front of my eyes. I've spent my life training to fight the same sort of criminals that took them from me. But this, this is different. This isn't about me. | „ |
~ Batman to Green Lantern. |
Bruce Thomas Wayne, also known as Batman, is one of the main protagonists of the DC Animated Movie Universe and the titular main protagonist of the spin-off film series of the same name. He appeared in twelve of the fifteen movies within the franchise and one short film.
Personality[]
“ | His trauma runs so deep. It's as if he defines himself by his pain. Such madness. | „ |
~ Mad Hatter describing the trauma that makes Batman who he is. |
Batman, in most of his incarnations, is a dark and brooding hero with a personal vendetta against crime and injustice. Psychologically traumatized by the death of his parents, Batman has sworn to rid Gotham from the criminal elements that took his parents away from him. He's extremely pessimistic and suspicious, which often makes it difficult for him to trust people other than Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, the Robins or the Batgirls.
Despite this, Batman has proved to have a great love for humanity, which was instilled by his parents. His father was a doctor, while his mother was a crusader against child abuse. Indeed, Batman's oath of vengeance is tempered with the greater ideal of justice. He refrains from killing, as he feels this wouldn't make him any better than the criminals he fights. He's also a very prominent member of the Justice League and the founder of the Outsiders. Although, there can be exceptions in beings that aren't technically considered "alive," as he could execute the mindless Parademons and the undead army of Talons from the Court of Owls.
His adherence to his code of not killing can, on rare occasion, enter pathological obsession and irrationality, which can lead to the lethal risks for himself; as seen when he refused to let the Riddler fall to his death, and would have died if not for Catwoman cutting the tether. Despite the reality of the situation, Batman was so distressed that he unintentionally caused a death, even of a murderous enemy, that Catwoman found him to be "insane," which ended their relationship.
To protect his secret identity, Batman has constructed a fake persona he can use in his civilian identity. To the world at large, Bruce Wayne is a self-absorbed, irresponsible playboy and philanthropist. Only his closest allies know that this attitude is just an act. Despite his commitment to justice, he doesn't consider himself to be a good person; part may be due to feeling guilt for his parents' deaths, and the brutality he sometimes relies upon makes him doubt the righteousness of his fight against crime.
He has a strong attachment to his family, especially Alfred, Dick Grayson/Nightwing, and Damian Wayne/Robin, and cares about them deeply. However, due to his childhood trauma, he can struggle to properly express his feelings, thus can unintentionally come across as controlling and indifferent, with the control merely being a desire to protect them, and his indifference his intense emotional discipline that can stifle healthy close connections.
Despite having worked effectively with the Justice League in repelling Darkseid's first invasion, Batman disregarded the concept of being in a permanent team of heroes from separate cities, failing to show up to meetings during its original official union. Yet with after the next global threat caused by Ocean Master, Batman became a willing and dedicated member of the League due to appreciating that a threat requiring various heroes wasn't an isolated incident with Darkseid. His subsequent appreciation for the team made him try to encourage his son, Damian, to learn how work effectively in a team, thus had Nightwing take the boy to the Teen Titans to teach him the lesson that Batman himself personally failed to realise at first.
Batman has high standards for his allies, thereby can seem condescending and judgemental; despite this, he is a good judge in character and ability, so develops a strong trust in any who meet or surpass his expectations. Yet like all of his relationships, he often fails to clearly express his affections, so frequently others assume he is grumpy or dislikes them. Nevertheless, even for colleagues who find him difficult, Batman is able to instill loyalty and belief in his wisdom, and this allows them work exceptionally as a team.

Bat-Suit: Batman's costume is composed of Kevlar and a small percentage of titanium; it's bullet-proof and resistant to most forms of attack (explosions, blunt trauma, falls, etc.) It's also flame-retardant and insulated. The gloves and the boots are reinforced to nullify the impact of punches and kicks. Batman's gauntlets have retractable metallic blades on their sides. The cape is extremely light and can be used to glide long distances. The cowl is composed in small part by lead, which shields Batman's face from identification via x-rays. It has also an infrared viewer and auditory sensors. The cowl is outfitted with security systems (aggravating gas, electric blasts, etc.) like the utility belt. The mask is also a transmitter-receiver.
Utility Belt: Batman keeps most of his personal field equipment in his iconic yellow utility belt. Over the years, it has produced plastic explosives, nerve toxins, batarangs, smoke bombs, a fingerprint kit, a cutting tool, a grappling line-launcher, and a re-breather. Superman also entrusted Batman with a ring made of Kryptonite, should the Man of Steel ever need to be reined in (because of mind-control by a super-villain, etc.).

It augmented his existing agility and increased his strength; it also allowed jumps far higher than usual. Trivia[]
- The late Kevin Conroy voiced Batman in the new universe created after Flashpoint. Jason O'Mara would later take on the role in the feature length films. Although, Conroy also voiced Thomas Wayne, Bruce's father, in flashbacks in Batman vs. Robin.
- During Justice League Dark: Apokolips War he is brainwashed into serving as Darkseid's right hand - the suit he wears is a capeless black Bat suit, with a red Bat symbol on the chest; this suit is similar to the Batman Beyond one.
- He has three significant romantic relationships in the franchise:
- Around 12 years prior to Son of Batman, he was in an on-again, off-again relationship with Talia al Ghul; before parting ways, they had a night of intimacy enabled due to Talia giving him an aphrodisiac hidden in a drink, although it is implied he would have slept with her again anyway, with the aphrodisiac making the typically cautious Batman to forgo protection. They bond during their reunion, partly due to them having a son together, Damian, but also due to their mutual attraction. Talia is killed by Deathstroke, and against his better judgement, Batman immersed her in a Lazarus Pit, reviving her, seemingly the same as before.
- Despite them parting again on amiable terms, the Lazarus Pit seemed to have begun twisting Talia, removing her desire to save the world at any cost, and replacing it with a desire to rule it, and her love for Bruce changed into a desire to simply control him. Talia brainwashed Bruce into being an obedient, silent sentinel for her world domination scheme; even Damian, evidence of their prior love, was discarded by her, as she created an accelerated aged clone of him, Heretic, who upon seeing his desperate plea to be considered a real son, she just as heartlessly killed him. When Batman was freed from the mind control, she just tried to kill him, too, reinforcing the fact that any love in her heart had vanished. Bruce and Damian accuse Talia of never caring about them, which she doesn't deny, albeit it could be plausible that she was too warped by the Lazarus Pits to even know herself anymore. Talia's descent into supervillainy, and Samantha being the leader of the Owls, had made Bruce reluctant and sceptical about any further romances.
- In Batman vs. Robin, he is dating socialite, Samantha Vanaver, though his attachment to her was more out of respect for her charitable endeavours and to reinforce his cover as harmless Bruce Wayne. He never on-screen learns that she is the Grandmaster of the Court of Owls, though she is killed by Talon before he learns the information, thus never confronted her for her deception, but doesn't seem to suffer lasting emotional damage; he notes that he held suspicions about her, however. Although, he still felt a physical attraction to her, since she was one of three illusions in his head during Talia's brainwashing.
- In Batman: Hush, despite his paranoia from prior failed relationships that ended with his lover being a master criminal, Batman entered a flirtatious dynamic with Selina Kyle/Catwoman (whom he must have met earlier and she made an impression, since she was one of the illusions in Talia's brainwashing program that was enticing him). Due to their similar backgrounds as orphans, adoption of an eccentric alternate identity, plus general chemistry drove Batman to uncharacteristically start a relationship with Selina, after also surprisingly revealing his true identity as Bruce Wayne. Along many passionate breaks, they work effectively as a crime fighting team, collaborating to unravel the conspiracy of Hush. Bruce's childhood friend, Thomas Elliot, is killed, seemingly by the Joker, which causes Batman to nearly beat his archenemy to death, until stopped by Gordon. Selina comforts Bruce in his grief and fear about almost losing control. Hush kidnaps Catwoman. Eventually, the mystery of Hush is revealed to be a persona created by the Riddler in a final scheme to destroy Batman and to prove he isn't a C-List villain. The fight in the factory ends as its begins to collapse; Riddler nearly falls, but is caught by Batman's grapple line; however, this almost drags them both down, until Catwoman severs the line, dropping Riddler to his death in molten metal. Escaping the factory, Batman is in shock, causing him and Catwoman to argue the rationality of his moral code, which ultimately seems so insane to Selina that she breaks off the relationship with him, although she is apologetic about it, and they seem to still maintain good terms despite the break up; therefore, ending his last romantic relationship of the franchise.
- There is a superficial continuity error with Bruce Wayne's scarred body. When unclothed in Hush, multiple scars are clear, but in Batman vs. Robin and Bad Blood, he doesn't have any scars, even though notable ones - such as the damage from Catwoman's claws on his chest - are stated to have happened prior to him becoming aware of his son Damian's existence, thus predating the series events.
