Batman: You don't understand. I don't think you ever understood.
Red Hood: What? What, your moral code just won't allow for that? It's too hard to cross that line?
Batman: No! God Almighty no! It'd be too damn easy. All I've ever wanted to do is kill him. A day doesn't go by when I don't think about subjecting him to every horrendous torture he's dealt out to others and then end him. (...) But if I do that, if allow myself to go down into that place, I'll never come back.
~ Batman telling Red Hood why he holds himself back all the time, even when he has the moral right to kill

History[]

Batman's parents were murdered when he was a child and he was taken in by his Butler; Alfred Pennyworth. As he grew up, he became Batman who is a masked vigilante and protector of Gotham City.

Batman adopted circus orphan, Dick Grayson, who became his sidekick Robin; however, when Dick reached adulthood, he went off on his own solo crimefighting career as Nightwing. Batman then soon found street urchin, Jason Todd, stealing tires from the Batmobile; admiring the boy's skill and bravery, he recruited him as the second, Robin. After a few years of a successful partnership, tension arose as when Robin entered his teens, he became more violent and ruthless in dispatching criminals. Before the subject could be properly broached, both Batman and Robin were needed to undertake the mission to stop Ra's al Ghul, who hired notorious supervillain, the Joker, to distract the duo. Jason was lured into a trap and captured by Joker and nearly beaten to death with a crowbar, the building he was inside then exploded after Joker escaped before the Dark Knight could save him.

Five years later, a new crime lord known as Red Hood now terrorizes Gotham. Batman and Nightwing soon questioned Joker while he was imprisoned at Arkham Asylum. Batman eventually teamed up with Red Hood to take down a group of assassins, however, reacted harshly when Hood killed one, and tried to kill the others, making them adversaries again, leading to Hood fleeing.

Due to recording Red Hood addressing Batman as "Bruce," and along with the criminal displaying tactics and fighting styles akin to Batman's own, made the Dark Knight make connections that seemed impossible. Bruce dug up the grave of Jason Todd, learning that the body was a dummy that he failed to realise due to grief making him unwilling to undertake an autopsy when he supposedly died.

Batman infiltrated the fortress of Ra's al Ghul, who revealed that he expected the arrival from observing Red Hood seizing control of most crime in Gotham. Ra's expressed regret and apology for hiring the Joker, as he never expected the Clown Prince would go after the boy, Robin. Ra's confessed that he took Jason's body - switching it with the dummy - and submerged Jason into a Lazarus Pit; this brought Jason back to life, but he insane and rushed out until disappearing into the ocean. Ra's had believed the resurrection failed, but realised he was wrong because of the appearance of Red Hood; Ra's apologised again, but Batman had already departed to return to Gotham City.

In the final battle, Batman fought and unmasked Red Hood, confirming Jason Todd beneath the helmet. Batman then soon finds out that Joker has been captured. Jason argued that Batman's methods failed, while his were actually working, as he believed that destroying crime was impossible, and the best choice to take control of it; Batman rejected his belief as merely an excuse for being yet another crime lord/

While the former partners and friends Batman and Jason fight, the battle is drawn to a specific apartment by Jason, revealing the tied up Joker. Batman again tried to reason with Jason, but the latter revealed that he forgave Batman for being unable to save him; Jason's vendetta was based on the fact that Batman didn't kill the Joker for taking the adopted son away from the father. Batman attempted to explain his non-killing code again, yet Jason claimed that he wasn't trying to make him kill every enemy, just the Joker for his countless atrocities.

Batman still refused to kill, which made Jason criticise him for it being too hard, however, Batman countered that his refusal was based upon it being too easy; Batman admitted that he imagined torturing and killing the Joker every day, but shows restraint as once the first life is taken, it would create a cycle of death that would corrupt Batman to be as bad as the Joker. Jason tells Batman either he'll kill Joker or Batman will have to shoot Jason to stop the execution. Batman takes a third option by walking away; in distress, Jason aimed and fired at him, but Batman manages to dodge the bullet and throw a batarang into the gun, blowing it up.

Jason activates a time bomb in an attempt to kill them all; before Batman can disarm the bomb, the Joker grappled with him, since he believed all three of them dying in an explosion would be the perfect ending that he desired. Batman knocks out Joker and grabs Jason to protect him. The bomb goes off and Jason escapes while Batman recovers Joker from the rubble to take him back to Arkham.

Since Jason wasn't located in the rubble, Batman solemnly considered searching for him, with Alfred trying to reassure him that Jason's fall wasn't Batman's fault, and there may still be hope. Batman remembered the first day that Jason became Robin, finding solace in the boy's past innocent joy.
