Bean the Dynamite is a recurring, yet minor, character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He is a green woodpecker with the unexplained ability to summon bombs at will. It is revealed in his official Fighters Megamix profile that Bean is fifteen years old and stands at 101 centimetres (or 3'3.5").
History[]
Sonic the Fighters[]
Bean is the seventh combatant during story mode and is in possession of the green Chaos Emerald and is fought in Dynamite Plant. Bean uses an array of bombs and other explosives to attack as well as rapid peck attacks. Sadly, Bean and Bark made no other appearances (other than their cameo in Generations) in any other Sonic games.
Japanese materials expand on Bean's background. He is the son of Bin, the hero of the game, Dynamite Dux and loves playing soccer. A friend of Sonic, Bean was guarding one of the Chaos Emeralds from Eggman and Fang. When Knuckles proposed a fighting tournament for the right to face Eggman, Bean decided to join the tournament.
Virtua Striker 2[]
Bean appeared as a member of the MVP Yuki Chan team, a secret team in Virtua Striker 2, the second installment in Sega's popular arcade soccer series released in 1997. This is fitting given Bean's stated love of soccer.

Fighters Megamix[]
Bean is an unlockable character in Fighters Megamix, a Beat 'em-up released on the Sega Saturn in 1996. His playable stage is not the Dynamite Plant but the Angel Island stage (probably because Grace's own stage, Big Factory, greatly resembles it).
Shenmue[]
He appeared as a collectible toy in Shenmue and Shenmue II.
Sonic Generations[]
After a long hiatus, Bean makes a cameo appearance in City Escape of Sonic Generations. Bean appears on wanted posters dotted throughout the level, alongside Bark the Polarbear.
Sonic Mania[]
In the Mirage Saloon Zone, Bean, along with Fang the Sniper and Bark the Polarbear, is pictured on various wanted posters throughout the stage. Later, during the Act 2 boss fight, Heavy Magician shapeshifts into Bean, Fang, and Bark in order to attack; in her Bean form, she jumps around the arena and tosses bombs. This indicates that Bean was framed for Heavy Magician's crimes.

Trivia[]
- Bean seems like an inspiration from Bin and Pin, the bomb-tossing duck protagonists of another Sega AM2 game called Dynamite Dux.
- Bean and Bark are on "Wanted" posters along with Fang in Generations and later Mania, likely referencing their role as a trio of comedic mercenaries in the Archie comics.
