Beatrice is the tritagonist of the cartoon series Over the Garden Wall. She is a talking bluebird that accompanies Wirt and Greg, giving them advice every now and then. It's later revealed that she and her family have been cursed into becoming bluebirds as punishment for her throwing a rock at one, and her goal is to find a way to transform them back.
She was voiced by Melanie Lynskey.
Appearance[]
Beatrice initially appears as a small bluebird with grey head, red chest and white underbelly. It's later revealed that she's in fact a human transformed into a bird, and her human form is a ginger girl of roughly the same age as Wirt's. She has freckles, wears a red dress, and her hair is put into a bun.
Personality[]
Beatrice is a very tough girl who is normally emotionally closed off. While she develops a friendship with Wirt and Greg, she mostly argues with them or criticize their flaws. It's implied that she was like this even before her transformation, since she threw a rock at a bluebird. As the series progresses, Beatrice is revealed to be guilt-ridden because it was her fault that her family were transformed into bluebirds, and she will do everything to transform them back. At the same time, she also thinks that her family resent her because of what she did, unaware that they actually love and miss her, even asking Wirt to give her a hug for her and the family.
Biography[]
Beatrice was once a human girl, until one day where she threw a rock at a bluebird. As a result, she and her family were cursed into becoming bluebirds as a punishment. Beatrice then fled home and made a deal with the witch Adelaide to find a child servant for the latter in exchange for a pair of scissors that can turn her and her family back to humans by trimming their wings.
When Wirt and Greg are lost in the Unknown, they meet Beatrice, who directs them to Adelaide, who she says to be able to help them return home. When Adelaide traps the brothers however, Beatrice manages to kill her via opening a window and letting in the fresh night air, melting her away. The brothers then continue their journey, this time without Beatrice as they think she betrayed them.
However, when Greg lets himself take his brother's place to have his soul claimed by the Beast, Beatrice returns to assist Wirt in finding him. After Wirt refuses to become the Beast's new lantern-bearer and rescues Greg, he bids Beatrice a farewell before carrying his brother home. In the epilogue, it's shown that Beatrice has successfully turn herself and her family back into humans, presumably thanks to her service to Wirt.
