~ Becca's dying words to Billy, succumbing to a wound inadvertantly inflicted on her by Ryan. |
Rebecca "Becca" Butcher (née Saunders) is a major character in the 2019 Amazon TV adaptation of the comic book series The Boys. She is the late wife of Billy Butcher.
Becca was the Senior Director of Digital Marketing at Vought International until her disappearance following a meeting with Homelander of The Seven. While initially presumed dead by Billy, it was later revealed that she was secretly alive and raising her naturally super-powered son Ryan, who was conceived when Homelander raped her.
Vought kept Becca in a secure facility to raise Ryan away from both Homelander, Billy, and the rest of society. Though she loved her son deeply and tried to give him a normal upbringing despite the circumstances, she felt trapped between protecting him from the outside world and preventing Homelander from forcing himself into their lives to raise Ryan as his own. She feared Ryan would embrace supervillainy like his biological father.
Becca was accidentally killed by Ryan's powers during a confrontation when Stormfront and Homelander attempted to take him away, the former nigh-lethally strangling Becca as it happened. In her final moments, she asked Butcher to take care of Ryan and assure him that her death was not his fault. Her death broke Butcher emotionally, and after his sickly use of both Compound V and Temp-V, Becca began appearing as hallucinations in his mind to ensure that he makes things right.
She is portrayed by Shantel VanSanten.
Personality[]
Becca is, first and foremost, a fiercely loving and protective individual. She deeply loves her son, Ryan, and prioritizes his safety above all else, including her own - evident when she angrily stabs the super-powered Stormfront in the eye to protect him despite the personal risk. Even when Ryan accidentally causes her death, she believes that he is good at heart and, heartbroken seeing him cry, convinces Billy to spare him the guilt by telling him it wasn't his fault.
While appearing timid at first glance, she is actually resilient, brave, and strong-willed; despite the hardships she endures, including her abusive relationship with Homelander and separation from Billy Butcher, nothing brings her down to the point where she loses determination or faith, and she is able to stand up to Homelander with the help of The Boys. She makes Billy promise that Ryan will always be protected as her dying wish, showing how wholly concerned and devoted she is to him.
Unlike many characters in The Boys who are morally compromised (her husband among them), Becca is among the most compassionate and kind characters and is genuinely empathetic to others, and The Boys treat her as though she is special on her arrival. Moreover, she is exceptionally loyal and forgiving, and often sees the best in people despite their flaws. Even after learning that Billy was going to throw her under the bus by separating her from Ryan through a deal with Stan Edgar, she forgives him, remarking that it doesn't matter because he didn't go through with it, and insists that they stick together. The same is true for Ryan, whom Becca understands has difficulty trusting either herself or Homelander yet doesn't blame him for it ever.
Biography[]
Background[]
As Vought's digital marketing director, Becca managed the company's social media presence. During the company's 2011 Christmas celebration, she introduced her spouse Billy to Homelander, who expressed gratitude for her work on his Twitter account. Following the party, Homelander sexually assaulted Becca in a private setting, and she later sought assistance from Vought upon discovering her pregnancy with Homelander's child.
Under the supervision of Madelyn Stillwell and Dr. Jonah Vogelbaum, Becca underwent medical care but was required to sign a confidentiality agreement, preventing her from disclosing anything about the situation - even to Billy. Following an extremely difficult and gruesome delivery, Vought relocated her to a secure facility overseen by Dr. Park. Through this arrangement, Becca would raise her child privately, though it also meant the world believed she had vanished or perished. For eight years, Becca lived in isolation with her son Ryan, completely separated from both Homelander and the world.
Season One[]
After discovering Becca's disappearance, Homelander was directed by Stillwell to speak with Vogelbaum. According to Vogelbaum's initial account, Becca had died during childbirth, with Homelander's son also perishing in the process. When Homelander questioned Madelyn about the child, she gave a different story, claiming there had been a miscarriage instead. Growing suspicious of these conflicting accounts, Homelander confronted Vogelbaum again and extracted the real truth about his son's existence. Eventually, both Homelander and Billy learn that Becca was actually alive and had been secretly raising their son Ryan in a hidden location.
Season Two[]
Following Homelander's forced visits to see her son, Becca expressed her fury to Park, reminding him their agreement meant Homelander would stay away. Dr. Park dismissed her concerns, merely suggesting she wait for Homelander to lose interest.
Tensions escalate between Becca and Homelander over Ryan's upbringing - she desires normalcy while he pushes for superhero training, until Ryan himself warns Homelander to stay away due to the way he is treating both of them. Billy's unexpected return to Becca, having infiltrated the gated region, brings a brief reunion where they discuss their potential future together. Though they devise an feasible escape plan using a garbage truck, Becca ultimately refuses to leave with Billy. She predicts Billy will find subtle ways to eliminate Ryan over time, and in spite of Billy's promises to help raise Ryan, Becca argues that she sees his true intentions. When Billy admittedly labels Ryan as Vought's property, he suggests they escape alone, but Becca refuses to let Ryan become another Homelander through their negligence. As Becca drives away, she triggers an alarm that forces Billy's departure.
Her situation worsens when Homelander, accompanied by Stormfront, interupt Becca and Ryan's Lego playtime. Becca watches uneasily as they introduce themselves to Ryan. When Homelander apologizes for his previous behavior and Stormfront discusses Ryan's abilities, Becca tries to change the subject. Homelander expresses regret to both, explaining his desire to be present in Ryan's life and introduce him to Stormfront, ostensibly seeking harmony between everyone in their "family."
During Ryan's Lego animation screening of The Blindside, Stormfront and Homelander inquire about his interest in more mainstream entertainment like video games or YouTube, concepts unfamiliar to Ryan. Becca resists their suggestions, while they continue manipulating and exciting Ryan's curiosity despite her objections. She pulls Homelander aside for discussion. Becca accuses him of trying to turn Ryan against her, but Homelander claims that he wants better for Ryan, citing his similar upbringing in isolation. He warns that Ryan will react poorly to outside exposure, just as he did. Becca counters that Ryan's situation differs due to her maternal presence. She says that sudden exposure to the outside world would overwhelm Ryan. When Homelander calls her dishonest, Becca defends her actions as protecting Ryan. She pleads for his discretion, and Homelander seemingly agrees.
Later, Becca discovers Ryan missing while preparing dinner. Finding him with Homelander and Stormfront, she faces Ryan's resentment over her deception. Homelander has revealed to Ryan that he lives in an artificial environment. Becca confronts Homelander furiously, who defends Ryan's right to truth. Despite Becca's attempts at explaining the circumstances, Ryan refuses to listen and claims that he hates her. When Homelander suggests separation, Becca protectively shields Ryan, asserting his need for maternal care. Stormfront assures her of continued maternal presence. Ryan breaks free and flies away with Homelander, leaving Becca devastated.
Eventually escaping the compound, Becca locates Butcher at the East Flatbush pawnshop where The Boys are stationed, embracing him upon entry. She informs Billy about Ryan's abduction by Homelander and Stormfront.
Before Stormfront's arrival, Billy directs Becca, Mother's Milk, and Ryan to evacuate, but Stormfront intercepts and overturns their vehicle. Though unharmed, they flee while The Boys distract Stormfront. She pursues them through the forest, calling to Ryan. When Billy intervenes, she incapacitates him with plasma. As Stormfront attempts Ryan's capture, Becca insists that she stay away before stabbing her in the eye. Stormfront, extracting the blade, begins strangling Becca against a tree. Ryan's pleas to spare his mother go unheeded. Enraged and distressed, Ryan unleashes his heat vision in a blinding flash. Afterward, Stormfront lies severely burned, speaking German deliriously to her deceased husband, with charred limbs and disfigured face. However, Ryan's attack also fatally wounded Becca's neck. Despite Billy's desperate calls for help, none arrives. As she dies against a tree, Becca makes Billy promise to absolve Ryan of guilt by telling him that her death wasn't his fault, along with protecting him from Homelander. Ryan apologizes repeatedly.
Season Four[]
Butcher experiences a hallucination of Becca, induced by Temp-V, where she repeats her final words to him. During this vision, she cautions him about Ryan, warning that if he follows Homelander's path, it could lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity.
