Bell-mère (ベルメール, Berumēru?) is the overaching protagonist of the Arlong Park arc of One Piece. She is a former member of the Marines and the adoptive mother of Nojiko and Nami. She was killed by Arlong (who later kidnapped Nami to force her to join the Arlong Pirates).
She was voiced by Noriko Hidaka in Japanese, Chio Su-Ping in the Odex English dub, Veronica Taylor in the 4Kids English dub and Cynthia Cranz in the Funimation English dub. In the live action she is portrayed by Genna Galloway.
Biography[]
During her youth, she loved to cause trouble in the Cocoyashi village, to the annoyance of the inhabitants. However, this changed when she decided to join the marine. Then she dedicated many years of her life to fight and capture pirates. One day during a storm, Bell-mère found two survivors, a child named Nojiko and a baby that she found. Seeing that they lost their parents, Bell-mère decided to adopt both of them and named the baby Nami, leaving the Marine in the process. Bell-mère returned to Cocoyashi and lived with her daughters being very tight on money, the three of them survived thanks to a harvest of tangerines and Bell-mère tried hard to demonstrate that they are a real family despite not having blood ties. Due to their situation, Nami learned to steal to get what she want, although she was always catched by Genzo, Bell-mère tried to seduce him to make him forgive them, a behavior that Nami will copy from her. One day, after a discussion with Nami, the Arlong Pirates arrived to Cocoyashi to take control of it. Arlong imposed a tax that each inhabitant had to pay to let them alive. The inhabitants of Cocoyashi village decided not to tell where Bell-mère's house was since she has no enough money to pay her tax with the ones of her daughters. But that day she was cooking Nami's favourite lunch to make peace with her, and the chimney smoke made Arlong know where she lived. In her house, Bell-mère aimed at Arlong with a shotgun, but Arlong broke it easily with his jaws. Then the other villagers tried to hide her daughters to save her, but Bell-mère, knowing that the lie would not last long, used all her money to save her daughters, then she sayed goodbye to Nami and Nojiko and then is executed by Arlong.
After Arlong is defeated by Monkey D. Luffy, Genzo claims that Bell-mère's soul now can rest in peace and puts his grinder on her grave.
