Helen Park: And now the training's complete. We just need to give the subject a name—
Russell Adler: Bell.
~ Helen Park and Russell Adler, the latter giving Bell their nickname.

Agent Bell is the main protagonist and main playable character in the 2020 video game, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Originally the right-hand of Perseus, they were brainwashed by the CIA into helping them stop Perseus and his spy network before presumably being eliminated by Russell Adler.

Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known about the operative that would become "Bell", but it's assumed that they were born in Russia and became acquainted with the Soviet spy Perseus. The operative became Perseus' right-hand, and, according to Perseus, lacked hesitation when fighting in combat. It's also unknown if the operative served in the Soviet Armed Forces, but they would become Perseus' most trusted lieutenant, and became a member of Perseus' spy network that was named "Perseus". During the Cold War, Perseus became disgusted with how the Soviet Union was being influenced by the United States and that its leaders failed to do anything about it, and slowly lost his loyalty to the Russian government. Seeing that the Soviet Union was becoming weak, he decided to use American nukes that were stationed across Europe to make the Soviet Union win the Cold War.

Bell was present when Perseus revealed his plan to his associates and fellow spy network members: Russian arms dealer Anton Volkov, KGB Major Vadim Rudnik, Iranian terrorist Arash Kadivar, and CIA defector Robert Aldrich. Perseus revealed that they would steal the American nukes while placing weapons in Duga as a cover and safely detonate them at the Solvovetsky Islands. The lieutenant and Arash were then sent to deal with the weapons to give to Volkov, going to the Trazbon Airfield in Turkey to do so.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War[]

Trabzon Airfield[]

In 1981, Perseus' lieutenant was betrayed by Arash at the airfield, as the latter was jealous of the favoritism the lieutenant received from Perseus. Arash, however, was eliminated by the CIA, who sent operatives Russell Adler, Alex Mason, and Frank Woods to to stop Arash and his second-in-command, Qasim Javadi, due to their involvement in the Iran Hostage Crisis. Before he was eliminated, Arash revealed to Adler that Perseus was alive and had plans. Adler then told Mason and Woods that they needed to search for survivors at the tarmac, and Adler discovered the lieutenant barely alive.

Brainwashing[]

After they recovered, the CIA interrogated the lieutenant for days to get information on Perseus and the dossier they held, but to no avail. Seeing an opportunity to use the lieutenant to find Perseus, Adler and MI6 agent Helen Park use the MKUltra Program to brainwash them, and implanted memories of Vietnam so the lieutenant could have a bond with Adler. Given the code name "Bell", the lieutenant was kept in line with drugs and with the phrase "We've got a job to do" by Adler, and were also given false memories of being CIA, ex-MI6, or ex-KGB agents. Adler and Park also informed CIA agents Jason Hudson, Lawrence Sims and Mossad liaison Eleazar "Lazar" Azoulay about Bell's programming, but Hudson didn't like the idea of using the Soviet agent.

CIA Safehouse[]

At the CIA safehouse in West Berlin, Adler asks Bell to recall Fracture Jaw, an operation where they, Adler and Sims found a Russian dossier and Soviet activity in Vietnam. During the operation, Bell, Adler, and Sims collect a nuclear bomb, and are forced to fend off a Viet Cong ambush after their helicopter crashes. Though an implanted memory, it was used by Adler to make Bell recall the dossier they held when at the Trabzon Airfield and decoding the names in the file. MI6 managed to decode the dossier, finding the name of Anton Volkov, a Russian mafia arms dealer who was stationed in East Berlin when the wall went up.

Hunting Volkov[]

Knowing that Volkov is stationed in East Berlin, the CIA decide to go after him to get any information they can on Perseus, but also go after his chief courier Franz Kraus since he has a meeting with the mafia boss. The team are also assisted by BND spy Greta Keller and CIA informant Lukas Richter, but the latter is revealed to have been apprehended by the Stasi police patrolling Berlin. Bell, Adler, Park, and Lazar manage to infiltrate East Berlin by taking the train, and Bell meets with Keller in the bar where Kraus is waiting for Volkov. The Stasi then inform Kraus that he was followed to the bar, and to return to his apartment to await for Volkov to call. Bell escapes from the bar through the bathroom window, and the player has the option to find Richter and rescue/eliminate them. If the player decides to, they can find evidence for another CIA operation, and find a document where the Stasi note that Richter revealed his allegiance to the KGB. The player can either let Richter go, or state that Richter was careless and can't be trusted before shooting him.

Bell then regroups with Lazar, and the two meet with Park in an abandoned store that faces Kraus's apartment, whom is receiving a call from Volkov. Bell is tasked by Park and Lazar to enter Kraus's apartment and to place a tracker into his briefcase, and the former manages to do so without being discovered. Finding a hidden room with the briefcase, Bell sees that the case contains photo of a nuclear bomb, and finds Greta tied in the closet. Bell is knocked unconscious by Kraus, and is taken to a warehouse where Volkov is awaiting to interrogate them and Greta. If the player saved Richter, he will be present and Volkov will reveal that Lukas reported Greta to the Stasi. During the interrogation, Bell can insult Volkov or be calm, and insulting Anton can cause him to order the death of Greta. Adler, Park, and Lazar arrive before Volkov could execute Bell, and the group fight Volkov's henchmen while the arms dealer attempts to escape. The team eliminate the henchman, and Bell will corner Volkov at the door, and can either apprehend or eliminate Anton.

If Bell captures Volkov, Park thanks them on the behalf of MI6, as they had made capturing him a top priority.

If Bell eliminates Volkov, Adler congratulates them for taking another one of Perseus's agents off of the board, while Park shows disappointment for not apprehending him.

Operation Greenlight[]

With Kraus' briefcase, the team learned that it contained information on a nuclear bomb that Perseus had obtained, and revealed coordinates to a secret Soviet military base hidden in Ukraine. Bell works with Woods to infiltrate the base to gain intel on Perseus's doings, and the two saw Spetsnaz training in a made-up American town that had targets. The two fought their way to the central computer, and found two audio recordings of Hudson and Emerson Black discussing Perseus stealing an American nuke from Berlin. Bell also printed info on "Operation Greenlight", which revealed that Hudson was the head of the CIA project, angering Woods. With the base on alert, Bell and Woods managed to escape with use of an APC, and had Park call in Adler and Mason to exfiltrate them out of the area.

Adler and the team confronted Hudson on the information they received, and he revealed that Operation Greenlight was a scorched earth policy created as a counterattack if the Soviet Union invaded Western Europe. After the confrontation, the printout that Bell got from the computer mentioned that the Soviet Union were excavating at Mount Yamantau, and the CIA's KGB mole Dimtri Belikov confirmed the information. Adler then sent Mason and Woods to Mount Yamantau to excavate whatever the Soviets and Perseus were after, and learned that they were trying to collect a mainframe from the Yamantau computers that had a list of all the sleeper agents Nikita Dragovich had created. With the assistance of Belikov in a Mi-24, Mason and Woods managed to excavate the mainframe, but Black revealed to Hudson that Perseus wiped it before they arrived to the mountain.

Infiltrating the KGB[]

Seeing that the only source to get the list of names was in the KGB building in Moscow, Hudson gave Adler and his team permission to infiltrate the Lubyanaka building. Though Hudson didn't want Bell on the mission, they were allowed to join Adler while Belikov provided them with uniforms and a bunker key to reach to the archive bunker. While going down to the achieve bunker, Imran Zakhev entered and took the elevator to go to a meeting, and asked Bell and Adler whom they reported to. If Bell tells Zakhaev that they are reporting to Commander Sobol, Zakhaev informs them that he is meeting Sobol, and that he will give them his regards. If Bell says Commander Utkind/Petrov, Zakhaev confronts the two by holding them at gunpoint, but is knocked out by Adler before he could shoot. The player also has the option to simply but Zakhaev into a chokehold, and letting Adler knock Imran unconscious in the elevator.

Bell and Adler then changed into their clothing and collected their weapons, and proceeded to fight off KGB and Spetsnaz soldiers to reach the archives. The two managed to copy the list of names onto a floppy disk, and save Belikov who was exposed as the mole within the KGB. Using gas, the two rescued Belikov and gave him a gas mask and a weapon to escape with them, and collected heavy armor and light machine guns to fight off the soldiers. The trio met with Lazar outside the building, and managed to escape from the KGB and Spetsnaz soldiers in the area.

Stopping Rudnik and Aldrich[]

The player has the option to stop Perseus's associates Rudnik and Aldrich, with Sims leading "Operation Red Circus" and "Operation Chaos". If the player collects all of the evidences and solves the decryptions, they will further cripple Perseus's spy network as Mason and Woods eliminate Rudnik and Aldrich.

Havana[]

From the list of sleeper agents, they pin point that Perseus was going to use Theodore Hastings, a nuclear engineer who was part of Operation Greenlight. The CIA tracked Hastings to Cuba, where Perseus could receive help from Prime Minister Fidel Castro and his Tropas forces. Finding an abandoned facility in Havana that could hold the stolen nuke, Bell and the team assaulted the compound before separating into two teams - Bell, Park, Lazar and Adler, Mason and Woods to find Hastings and the stolen nuke. Bell used the security camera to find Hastings in the lab, but witnessed Perseus enter and shoot him and execute the scientists. Reaching to the lab, Hastings revealed to Park that Perseus re-programmed him to give him access to all of the detonation codes, allowing him to detonate all of the American nukes across Europe. Seeing that Perseus' plan is to detonate all of the nukes and frame the United States, Bell and the team decided to evacuate from the compound.

Bell, Park, and Lazar managed to reach the vac point with reinforcements on the rooftop, and had to fight off the Tropas and Cuban forces with the the assistance of "Skyhook". The pilot warned the trio that the plane only had enough fuel for one pass, and Park told Bell to harness up first. When preparing to leave, a Cuban soldier shot a rocket at them, injuring the group and preventing Park and Lazar from reaching their harnesses. Seeing that the plane was preparing to make the pass, Bell is left to make the choice to save Park, Lazar, or leave them both behind.

Interrogation[]

Bell returned to the safehouse in critical condition, but Adler decided to interrogate Bell for the last time and gave them a cerebral injection. Bell was forced to go through different scenarios from implanted memories of Vietnam, and encountered Perseus inside a Soviet bunker. Bell's subconscious attempts to fight the drugs given to them, but they eventually get the information of Perseus' plans and his location. After the interrogation, Adler, Sims, and Park/Lazar (or neither) revealed the truth about Bell's identity, and asked them to help them stop Perseus from killing thousands of people. The final chose is left up to the player: staying loyal to Perseus and lying to the CIA, or helping the CIA stop Perseus.

Endings[]

If Bell reveals that "Perseus" is at the Solovovetsky Islands, they will be part of the operation to assault the islands. Adler and Bell work together to destroy the two AA-guns, allowing Hudson to call in a bombing run to destroy the signal towers connected to the Solvovetsky monastery. Bell is rescued by Adler from the rubble, and Bell, Mason, and Woods hear Adler's speech on stopping Perseus. After stopping Perseus' plan, Bell is taken to a cliffside by Adler to be killed. The two draw their guns on each other and a gunshot is heard, leaving Bell's fate unknown. It's confirmed that Adler survived the encounter due to the Warzone storyline, but it's still ambiguous if he eliminated Bell.

If Bell decides to betray Adler and the team, they will lie and say that Perseus is located at an abandoned town in Duga-2. The team confront Bell on brining them to Duga-2, and the player can either explain to the team that they betrayed them, or signal the ambush. If the player doesn't signal the ambush or didn't contact their Soviet allies, Adler will kill them and leave the town to contact President Ronald Reagan. If the player signals the ambush, Bell will kill their former allies, and Perseus allows them to signal the detonation of the American nukes. Afterward, Perseus and Bell leave and go off the radar, and wait to continue their work on brining the Soviet Union as the only superpower.

Trivia[]

  • Bell's model is recycled from the multiplayer operative Harry Stone, which made most think they were the same character.
    • Stone's background also makes them different characters, with Harry being a former SAS officer turned mercenary.
