History[]

On November 21, 2014, when he was eight years old, his parents died in a car accident and only he survived. Ever since, he has been living out on the streets stealing expensive items, hoping to get rich. In the first scene in the movie featuring him, he is seen stealing a pearl bracelet from a Jewelry store called Glanzmeier, presumably to pawn it for cash. However, he is caught by the store's owner and a chase occurs, with the owner telling him that, "[He] won't get away [this time]," hinting that he might have stolen from him before. In order to lose him, he runs into a crowd in front of a cinema premiere of a movie called, "How To Tame Your Dragon" (name obviously a spoof of How to Train Your Dragon), where he steals a costume and runs into an alley leading to the warehouse where he resides.

When Ben makes it back to the warehouse, he grabs a pizza slice from a box of pizza he presumably stole, only for him to notice Firedrake behind him. At first, he thinks it's the same person in a dragon costume he encountered at the movie premiere, but when he looks at his teeth, he discovers that he's a real dragon, and is also surprised that he can speak after Firedrake says hello. When Firedrake falsely recognizes Ben as a "dragon rider" from a billboard for "How to Tame Your Dragon" seen through a window, Ben decides to go along with his beliefs to feed his fantasy, hoping to impress him. When Sorrel enters the warehouse to meet up with Firedrake after she fails to find, "the Internet," Sorrel is shocked to see Ben as she hates humans, believing them to be cheats and liars. Firedrake tries to calm her down by telling her that Ben is actually the legendary dragon rider, but she doesn't believe him. However, the police arrive at the warehouse, so Ben immediately wishes to join Firedrake and Sorrel on their quest to find the Rim of Heaven, which Firedrake agrees on, but Sorrel is still reluctant to go, but Firedrake convinces her otherwise. As a result, they all fly out of the warehouse and away from the police as quickly as possible and fly away from the city.

In the end, he is adopted by the Greenblooms, and he sends a package to Glanzmeier's owner, with a note saying "SORRY" and the bracelet he stole in the package, along with Nettlebrand's golden tooth being sent to him as well, making the owner happy that Ben has finally returned something he stole from him and had also given him something to sell in his store. In the final scene of the movie, the dragons and forest brownies are seen flying past the Greenbloom residence, where Ben and his new family wave goodbye to them before heading to The Rim of Heaven, as Ben watches Firedrake and Sorrel waving goodbye to him.
