“ | No need to worry. I have given you my loyalty—and as your loyal retainer, I would gladly die if ordered to do so. I know all too well by now that you'd never give us a meaningless order. | „ |
~ Benimaru to Rimuru, The Octagram Soars |
Benimaru is the major supporting character of the anime, manga and light novel series That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. He is an oni and loyal follower of Rimuru, as well as the son of the late ogre chieftain and Shuna's older brother. He is the Commander-in-Chief of Tempest and one of Rimuru's strongest subordinates, along with Diablo and Zegion within the Twelve Guardian Lords.
He is voiced by Makoto Furukawa in the Japanese version and by Ricco Fajardoin the English version.
Background[]
Benimaru was originally a nameless ogre born into the ogre village's ruling family as its sole prince, set to one day take over the duties of the chief. He grew up receiving combat instruction from the Sword Oni, alongside the many other ogres around his age.
One day, without warning, his village was razed by an army of Orcs, forcing him to flee with a small company of other survivors, including his sister. While seeking refuge in the forest, he encountered a masked majin and immediately attacked them alongside his brethren, assuming them to be affiliated with the perpetrators behind the slaughter of his people. The ogres were met with overwhelming resistance from the majin and forced to acknowledge they were outclassed. Still hellbent on seeking revenge, Benimaru mustered the resolve for one last act in exchange for his life, but was stopped by his sister who sensed they may have falsely accused the majin. Benimaru listened to the majin plead their case one last time, and after seeing the error of his ways, apologized, bringing the situation to a close.
The majin, who introduced themself as Rimuru Tempest, offered refuge to Benimaru and his companions, to which he acquiesced. They formed a temporary alliance with the majin as his mercenaries and received names from him, resulting in all the ogres evolving into kijin. After the defeat of the orc army, Benimaru and his brethren offered their permanent loyalty to the majin, going on to serve important positions in the slime's nation of monsters.
Appearance[]
As an Ogre, Benimaru used to be a tall and bulky man with long messy crimson hair, along with two dark horns, red colored skin, fire colored sharped eyes, small fangs coming out of his mouth and red tear shaped-lines underneath both of his eyes. He wore an samurai outfit that consist of a maroon armor covering his muscular body and black clothing along with maroon armors across his arm along with white fur around his neck. He learned to wear the armor from a human that visited his village a few 100 years ago. During his first appearace he also carried a large Katana.
Upon evolving into a Kijin, his height shrunked by 180 meter with a more sharpened jawline giving him a much more younger and more human appearance. As his red skin turned into a human colored skin. He starts wearing a brown attire adored with white fur linings. As the series progress, his outfit gets upgraded into a red, yellow and white kimono that matches his hair and eyes and has now a new Katana that were given by Shuna, the goblins and the Dwarves.
Personality[]
Benimaru has a carefree personality, that of an excited and confident man. Even so, he is actually really cautious and cunning as well. He has no interest in serving anyone who he doesn't deem worthy, however, he doesn't belittle those weaker than him either.
Benimaru felt hesitant when faced with the responsibility to take over the position of the Ogre Tribe village chief. Thus, he is content with his current position with Rimuru as the Lord he serves. As the military commander, he merely wishes to rampage to his heart's content. Had he become chief, he could not ride off to battle, but now it was different. He can participate without any concerns.
He was originally a very hot-headed person but after taking the role of general of the army under Rimuru he becomes more rational and calm in decision making. He is a battle maniac, challenging others who are stronger than him to see where he stands in the world.
Powers and Abilities[]
Benimaru possesses incredible strength even among his peers in Twelve Guardian Lords. He is highly skilled in swordsmanship with excellent commanding ability, making him a great General. He had fire powers naturally as an ogre, and they were only strengthened after being named by Rimuru to the point he can also perform the devastating Black Flame spell, which becomes one of his signature moves.
Likewise, Benimaru is a force of nature in his own right, being able to decimate multiple Orcs in battle without breaking a sweat and to slaughter and cleave through multiple Falmuth soldiers within a blink of an eye.
