Detective Benoit Blanc is the main protagonist of Rian Johnson‘s Knives Out film series. He is a private investigator who is often heralded as "the world's greatest detective".
He is portrayed by British actor Daniel Craig, who also portrayed James Bond in the 007 reboot series, Barathelemy Karas in The Resistance, Lord Asriel in The Golden Compass, Mikael Blomkvist in The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo, and Jake Lonergan in Cowboys & Aliens.
Personality[]
Blanc is considered to be "The Last of the Gentlemen Sleuths" and in many ways he fits that title. He's flamboyant, practical, gentlemanly, somewhat eccentric, a cigar chomper, but incredibly clever, intelligent, and overall a good detective. Blanc also speaks like a member of the Southern aristocracy with an accent that has been described by Ransom Drysdale as a "Kentucky Fried Foghorn Leghorn Drawl". He has a tendency to use phrases and words that not many people understand, but also often employs the use of metaphors during his cases, such as likening the case of Harlan's death to "a donut" and his interest in the symbolism of the Glass Onion.
Eccentricities aside, Blanc is a pleasant and well-meaning man who wants justice to be served. He never looks down on Marta, treats Nana with respect, and is utterly furious with the Thrombeys when he realizes just how self-serving and backstabbing they all really are. This tact even extends to the pretentious and unlikable Distruptors, all of whom he seems fairly interested in getting to know (even if only on a superficial level), and is even somewhat sheepish and reserved throughout Glass Onion as though he feels bad about imposing on the proceedings.
Appearance[]
Blanc is middle-aged man with pale skin, short greying hair, and very distinct bright blue eyes. He has a very sharp taste in fashion, as in both movies he dresses well and appropriately for where he is.
Abilities[]
His flamboyant personality and tendency to focus on who hired him to investigate the circumstances of Harlan's death itself make it easy to underestimate him, but when the chips are down, Blanc is still an excellent detective. Likewise, he is very good at reading people and picking up telling details about them, which is part of why he's such a great detective. For example, in Knives Out he instantly deduced that Marta had been lying to him about Harlan's death from the beginning, but didn't tell her nor bring it up to the cops or family because he recognized she was a good person who must have had her reasons.
Biography[]
Benoit Blanc was born in the Southern United States, with a detective as a father. At some point he married Philip. Otherwise, not much is known of his early life.
One day, he received an anonymous letter that contained a stack of cash and a newspaper clipping of Harlan Thrombey's death. Realizing that the sender thought there was a more sinister motive to his death, Blanc traveled to Maine and took up the case. There, he interrogated the members of the Thrombey household, including Harlan's nurse, Marta Cabrera. He immediately noticed the blood on her white shoes, and got her on the case to keep an eye on her. Keeping up a facade, he found motives for the murder from the rest of the family. Blanc chased down the mystery, eventually finding Cabrera working with Harlan's grandson, Ransom Drysdale. He then figured out the truth: Ransom had switched Harlan's medication, leading to Cabrera believing she had poisoned him. Harlan then killed himself, setting up the whole mystery. However, Cabrera had not switched the medicine, meaning that Harlan killed himself unnecessarily. Ransom was then arrested.
Later, he is proclaimed the world's best detective by Google, leading to a visit by Helen Brand, the sister of the late Cassandra Brand. She had been murdered, but the news had not gotten out yet. This lead to Blanc and Helen teaming up to discover the killer. The two went to the private island of Miles Bron, and met Lionel Toussaint, Birdie Jay, Whiskey, Duke Cody, and Peg. Blanc worked with Helen behind the scenes to discover the secrets leading up to Cassandra's death. However, Cody is killed and Helen (pretending to be Cassandra) is shot, but undamaged. Blanc distracts the party goes until Helen could find enough evidence to find the killer. Blanc deduces that Bron was the killer, but Bron burned the evidence. Unable to help further, Blanc gave Helen a bit of Klear, a hydrogen fuel, and left the area. Helen used the Klear to blow up the building, and ruin Bron's career. Blanc then sat on the beach, waiting for the police to arrive.
