Hero Overview

...OR YOU'RE FIRED!
~ Benson's first catchphrase.
GET BACK TO WORK!
~ Benson's second catchphrase.
YOU IDIOTS, that's the last time I entrust you about something which is really important, like the CHAIRS!
~ Benson as he angrily berated Mordecai and Rigby for not following the instructions about setting up the chairs.
Rigby, I'm proud of you. Not only did you last the whole day without quitting, but you applied to what you learned from your mentor to keep your job. Welcome back.
~ Benson when he told Rigby that he is proud of him when he passed the mentorship program.

Benson Dunwoody is the deuteragonist of the 2010 Cartoon Network series Regular Show, and one of the five tritagonists of Regular Show: The Movie. He is Mordecai and Rigby's former boss and new best friend.

When calm, he sounds almost monotone, but when angry, outraged and mad, he turns red and screams in an ear-bleeding way. He cannot stand Mordecai and Rigby's disobedience and irresponsible behavior, and threatens to fire them. Next to Skips, he is also the only serious worker of the park, although he still seems to have a sense of humor. He can also be pretty antagonistic.

He was voiced by Sam Marin, who also voices Pops Maellard and Muscle Man.

Appearance[]

Benson is an anthropomorphic gumball machine with pinkish purple/red gumballs enclosed by a glass dome and sunken eyes. The gumballs may act as facial hair for Benson, as noted by story boarder Benton Connor. It is also worth noting that the dispenser slot sits in a rather phallic position. The turn switch on his chest is shaped like a heart symbol, hinting that's probably where his heart is. When his latch is open, it is considered to him being naked, as well as his private area.

Personality[]

I don't hate you. I just hate some of the things you do! Okay, I really hate some of the things you do. I know you don't mean them, but I'm your boss and it's my job to push you to do better.
~ Benson gets honest with Mordecai and Rigby.
Benson

Benson in an angry mood.

Benson is easily the most short-tempered character of all. Whenever he is greatly upset (usually in the form of Mordecai and Rigby slacking off), Benson loses his temper, turning varying shades of red. He'll even make big deals out of the smallest of things. Aside from this, Benson is usually calm, and in fact, enjoys being social, even with his two most disliked people. Whenever Benson is in a good mood (which happens more often after the episode Benson Be Gone), Benson rewards his employees with time off, usually in the form of nightly entertainment or dining out. Though despite his selfishness and aggressive tendencies on Mordecai and Rigby on blind trust he is shown that he really loves Mordecai and Rigby he admits it before falling into the ground.

Biography[]

"Trapped" in a Dome[]

Benson makes an announcement during a normal park meeting: the Park is going to be sealed in a dome every month in order to create a contained ecosystem. Later, he had a plan to rescue his employees infiltrating the park against Dr. Dome and his scientists, because Benson found out their scheme, he rallied the rest of the employees to escape.

It seems the dome has returned, but Benson doesn't notice this, starting to talk about an aftermath meeting instead. Everyone else does notice, and is struck dumbfounded, starting at it. Benson tells Pops to go look for branches and Skips to go get a new kit; the latter responds that it's not going to happen. Benson thinks he won't because it's a long drive; however, Skips turns his head towards the dome, telling him to look up, to which Benson replies with a simple "No..." before saying it twice again, but more panicked.

In a illusion he's holding onto an antenna hanging upside down, looking into a mess of storm clouds which peel away to reveal the Park, in the dome, which resembles Pops now, with the mustache, nose and hat and pink tint in the lines. An above mechanism lowers the button in front of him, expecting him to push it. He stutters, now unsure, as the antenna breaks. He slips, now dangling from the bottom of it, looking down into deep space when a huge button appears below, telling him (with grotesque like teeth) he'll catch him so he doesn't fall, yet Benson insists he shouldn't. It asks him to push it now (as Mordecai and Rigby's arms appear at the bottom) in which Benson declines, making the decision to not push it after all. As soon as he says it, everyone's hands come pull him back to reality.

Staying in the Space[]

They all rush back to the park and see nothing while Benson gets a message saying that to end the experiment, they all need to push the button. Everyone from the high school graduation is walking towards the park, they push the button and immediately try to escape but become trapped in. Everyone begins wondering why and the park gets lifted up flying toward the air. Everyone looks up including Mr. Maellard, Dr. Langer, Mordecai's parents, CJ, Doug, Mr. Ross and Thomas. The park is now in space, and everyone becomes shocked at what just happened. Just then, Eileen comes out of the house in the park holding a banana souffle and becomes yet shocked to where she is right now, the souffle even deflating, much to everyone's surprise. The episodes ends with the park in space and Eileen asking, "what's going on" as a dandelion seed flying off into space, as it's revealed that the episode takes place at the immediate start of One Space Day at a Time, much to the viewers' surprise.

Later, he orders to his employees and Eileen to find some things connect with the Earth, later he and Rigby had a discussion, but after that they went to the house because unknown bots wanted to destroy them with their "kindness", later he punishes Mordecai and Rigby to accuse the Reaperbots, but later he knew the reaperbots true nature to attack The Park Gang. After that battle, he gets brought with the Space Tree Rangers, but rejects all of the Space Tree and he had a "bad future", but he entered in a simulator to the earth and accepts.

He then seats himself onto a drumming platform, which is connected to a crane, and drops a large cymbal on the ground and continues the solo. As he finishes the solo, he pulls a lever, but it attempts to stop him, only allowing him to continue the solo one handed, causing his skeleton to catch on fire (hence Rigby's rumor). He screams at them that he's going to punch them even though they haven't given up because it's his show. Trivia[]

  • The name Benson is of English origin. The meaning of Benson is "son of ben".
  • In "Rage Against the TV", it's revealed that he lives in an apartment and not at the park with the others.
  • He is a skilled drummer, as seen in the episode This Is My Jam. He says his ways of drumming are a "funny story", but was interrupted by Rigby before he could say anymore.
  • In "Brain Eraser", Benson's towel fell off, revealing an open hatch (which is his possible "junkmail"); this may be his equivalent of being naked.
    • On a side note, previously in Latin America, when Benson's towel falls off, that part is cut.
  • The name Benson was taken from J.G Quintel's student film The Naive Man from Lolliland because the Lolliland Man's driver is named Benson, later used for the gumball machine manager in the series.
  • After the events of Benson Be Gone, he loosened up slightly - while he still gets angry if Mordecai and Rigby mess up, he is more willing to accept their apologies, and has even taken them on nights out.
    • He seems much nicer in Over The Top, due to the fact that Mordecai and Rigby don't play as the main protagonists and are not causing any chaos.
  • At the 2012 Comic Con it was revealed that following the episode "Think Positive", Benson's voice actor, Sam Marin, developed a migraine and lost his voice after Benson's tirade.
  • In Think Positive, when he was a child, he used to be the quiet one in his family, ironically enough, until his father told him that yelling is the key to get anything he wants in life.
  • Benson has fired employees seven times in the series so far: in Don (Episode), he fired Muscle Man, in Benson Be Gone, he fired Susan, in Really Real Wrestling, he fired Mordecai and Rigby, in Under the Hood, he fired Muscle Man and Hi Five Ghost, in Weekend at Benson's, he fired Mordecai and Rigby again, and in Replaced, he fired Mordecai and Rigby for the third time, and in Muscle Mentor, he fired Rigby.
  • Benson usually turns red when he is angry, however, there is one exception at the end of Karaoke Video where Benson turns rather a shade of fuchsia pink.
