Bernadetta von Varley, also known as Bernie, is a major protagonist in the 2019 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses and its 2022 spin-off sequel Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.
She is the daughter of Grégoire von Varley and heir to House Varley, and a member of the Black Eagle House. She is very proficient with bows, but due to the severe abuse suffered at the hands of her father, has crippling anxiety issues and as a result is extremely timid and paranoid. Despite her paranoia, she strives to support her friends in anyway she can, and does eventually grow to become more braver, even if it is a slow progress.
She is voiced by Erica Mendez in English, and Ayumi Tsuji in Japanese.
Personality[]
Due to the traumatic upbringing under her father, Bernadetta is exceedingly shy and timid around strangers. She always assumes that everyone is out to hurt her, often running, screaming (or running away screaming) or even fainting on occasion. Even when someone is only looking out for her or complimenting her, such as Petra and Lindhart, due to her paranoia she will usually take it as hostility and believe they are plotting against her and seek her demise. She ends up spending most of her time in her room as a result. She also has very low self esteem, not appreciating her talents. If her efforts to flee those she deems threats end up with her being cornered and reprimanded for her behavior, she can sometimes angrily lash out at them belying her cowardly nature.
She does genuinely want to make friends with other people, even though she constantly misinterprets what her friends are saying. She also does not get scared by usually intimidating people such as Felix. She gets along very well with Alois, since he reminds her of her kind uncle. She enjoys reading, drawing, music, embroidery, carnivorous plants and animals and being left alone. She dislikes social interactions and imposing figures.
Biography[]
Bernadetta is the eldest daughter and heir of Count Grégoire von Varley, the Adrestian Empire's Minister for Religious Affairs. Grégoire, wanting his daughter to be a "good, submissive wife" that he could marry off to a rich nobleman, would train her for this role by tying her to a chair and forcing her to be silent for hours. She would hate these sessions, frequently kicking and screaming in her vain attempts to free herself from her restraints. Bernadetta's only friends growing up were her later uncle and a commoner boy who worked at her family's estate as an assistant gardener. When her father found out about her friendship with the boy, he had his men beat him to the brink of death. These experiences led to Bernadetta becoming fearful of interacting with anyone, both out of fear that they intended to harm her and fear that harm would come to them if they affiliated themselves with her.
What Bernadetta was unaware of was that her friend was in fact Yuri Leclerc, who had been hired by an unknown third party to assassinate her, due to her possessing a Crest of Indech. Yuri felt that the best way to get close to the heir of Varley was to gain her trust, which led to him befriending her. When the opportunity finally came for him to take her life while she slept, he could not bring himself to do so; he would later remember this moment as the biggest mistake he made at the time. Yuri's hesitation allowed Grégoire to catch him in the act, resulting in the Count's men brutally beating him, though he survived. Bernadetta was never informed of Yuri's attempt to kill her and never saw him again, leading her to believe that her friend's affiliation with her had lead to his death.
She was practically kidnapped by her mother in order for her to go to Officers Academy in the Garreg Mach Monastery. She joined the Black Eagle house and when she is not at lectures or in class, she is almost always in her room. She will be recruited instantly if Byleth chooses the Black Eagle house. She can be recruited into the Blue Lions or Golden Deer if Byleth has enough Strength and Bow proficiency.
In the Crimson Flower route, she stays with Byleth and Edelgard, saying that she trusts the professor. In the Azure Moon and Verdant Wind routes, she will stay with Byleth if recruited. If she is not recruited, she will appear as an enemy in the Battle at Grondor Field. If she dies, Edelgard will mourn for her, saying that her sacrifice will not be in vain. In the Silver Snow route, she stays with Byleth and the church, saying that she trusts the Professor more than Edelgard.

Bernadetta is an playable character in the gacha mobile game, Fire Emblem Heroes. She was added to the game on March 6, 2020, under the "Harmony amid Chaos" banner and her winter variation was added on December 17, 2020, under the "A Festival Miracle" banner.
