Beru is a major character in the Korean dark fantasy action manhwa and light novel series Solo Leveling. He is also the deuteragonist of the sequel Solo Leveling: Ragnarok.
Formerly known as the hidden boss of Jeju Island, the Ant King, he was defeated by S-rank hunter, Sung Jinwoo who recruited him as one of his shadow soldiers. In a seemingly short amount of time, he easily became one of his most loyal and most powerful minions, until Bellion, the most powerful shadow soldier in existence, joined.
Beru is a massive and towering humanoid Shadow ant, similarly to his alive counterpart. He has lenthy arm with sharp claws. His eyes and the aura surrounding him were a fearsome blue initially when he was first revived. His eyes can can shrink to various size depending on his mood. He still possesses his pair of antennas and mouth as an ant. Like his fellow Shadows, upon becoming a Marshal Grade, Beru's aura changed to dark purple.

Personality[]
Now having been resurrected as a shadow soldier, Beru still had his similarities in contrast to when he was the Ant King. Holding a high bloodthirst for battle and violence. Despite now willing to follow all of his new master's orders, he can happen to forget his order as shown when he attempts to harm Cha Hae-In when it was requested by Jinwoo before to not harm her no matter what. Although he listened to his request earlier but eventually could not contain himself, leading him to make an attempt to attack her back when he received a strike on his back before being adverted by Jinwoo. His loyalty toward his master grew further as shown when he assisted the best he could to face the Monarchs and can be even seen to heal another hunter Thomas Andre.
During his free time, he can be shown to have a rather human side when he adopts a hobby on his own by watching Korean TV dramas on television. As a result, he started to adopt a playful nature when interacting with others, specifically with his master and refer his fellow Shadows as peasants Beru additionally also retains his memories from when he was the Ant King.
Biography[]
Jeju Island Arc[]
Upon being revived as a new shadow soldier for Jinwoo, he finishes off the former member of his kind, the ants as an order given by his master.
Ahjin Guild Arc[]
Jinwoo summons Beru to test if Chae Hae-In is worth being recruited as a member of his guild upon being asked if she could join or not. Being ordered to not aim for any harm, he starts the duel by keeping his order in mind, but he eventually becomes furious when he gets stabbed in the back by the woman but is stopped by Jinwoo.
Following days, Beru is ordered to take his place in his position of assisting the raid inside the Busan A-rank gate learning that his young sister is in a dangerous situation. During the shadow monarch's absence, Beru impresses the hunters with his murderous combatant abilities as an ant and instantly eliminates all the magic beasts in a matter of time, counting even the boss of the dungeon who was killed with a single strike.
Double Dungeon Arc[]
Beru is assigned to take care of Jinha after witnessing the traumatizing and distressing situation she got into with the leader of the magical beasts at her school. Beru eventually decided to turn on the television since Jinha did not do much aside from taking from falling asleep. However, he is soon caught by Jinwoo through his Shadow Preservation.
Japan Crisis Arc[]
Beru alongside the other shadow soldiers was sent to attack the horde of giants magical beasts in Tokyo. Afterward, he assists in eliminating the giant that was defending the gate of the S-rank gate there.
International Guild Conference Arc[]
Beru is summoned again after he switches place with his master and rescue Jinho who was on the verge of death after being murdered by Hwang Dongsoo.
Monarch War Arc[]
Jinwoo faces the three monarchs, Querehsha, the Beast, and Frost Monarch alone before he summons Beru to aid him in the fight. Beru furiously attacks them cursing at them for attacking his master but gets restrained. Out of desperation, Jinwoo tries to help his shadow as he sees his soldier disappearing, only to learn that he is unable to extract him due to being restrained. He eventually rescues him by charging at the enemies. Beru faces Querehsha who tells him he is punished for fighting back his "mother".
Later on in the battle with Querehsha killed by Jinwoo easily tracks down the location of the Beast Monarch (who left the battle). During his master's absence, from far away, he is seen healing the American hunter, Thomas Andre who aided Jinwoo earlier in facing the monarchs.

As former Ant King, he is an immensely powerful S-rank beast who easily decimated all S-rank hunters before becoming one of the strongest shadows in Jinwoo's army and is only rivaled by Igris and outclassed by Bellion.

Immense physical condition: Beru possesses immense strength, speed, and durability, making him a deadly opponent to not only to hunters, but also to the Monarchs as well, even Cha Hae-In, a top-tier S-Rank hunter, while holding back, easily outclassed her like he did before as the Ant King, who single-handedly knocked her out in one blow, along with killing the strongest S-rank, Goto Ryuji, in two hits. As a shadow, he is able to kill an Arch Lich alone, an extremely dangerous beast that only S-Rank Hunters are qualified to fight them. He later became more powerful as a Marshal grade shadow, as he can break out of the Frost Monarch's ice prison, slash off the Plague Monarch Querehsha's fingers, destroying the Frost Monarch's giant ice, and able to kill Tarnak, Monarch of Iron Body, with the help of Bellion and Thomas Andre.
Regeneration: Beru regenerate as a Shadow, as long as his liege's mana does not run out. However since Jinwoo has limitless mana, Beru and any other shadows are immortal under most circumstances.
Healing magic: Beru is a master healer, being able to not only bring Jinho back to full health from the brink of death, but also heal himself after his sparring match with Jinwoo.
Claw Fighter: Beru is proficient in using claws to kill all enemies, even slashing Queresha's fingers.
Flight: As the king of the ants, Beru can fly using his wings at high velocity.
Gluttony: Beru can absorb the skills and knowledge of those he consumes.
Conversation: Beru can talk as a General to Marshal Grade Shadow. However speech was already available to the Ant King since he already consumed humans, which is then presumably passed down to his shadow counterpart.
Paralysis and Poisoning: Beru can shoot extremely concentrated poison from his mouth using his bladed tentacles tongue. Due its magical nature, this poison is exponentially more toxic than its original version and kills a target in seconds.
Ice Manipulation: Beru is able to create Ice pillars and walls with Magic he stole from one of the hunters from Jeju Island with his ability gluttony.

Beru's names originates from the first name of the French novelist Bernard Werber, who is the author of the renowned 1991 novel titled Empire of the Ants.
