Inspector Beth Lestrade is one of the main characters of the 1999-2001 animated series Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century. She is a descendant of the original Inspector Lestrade, and, much like him, serves as Holmes's main ally and point of contact in the Scotland Yard of New London. She was also the one who spearheaded the project to bring Holmes back to life in the future.
She was voiced by Akiko Morrison.
Personality[]
Described as a "lone wolf" by Chief Inspector Grayson, Lestrade is the complete opposite of the calm and collected Holmes, being impulsive, hot-blooded and impetuous, often taking a "shoot first, ask questions later" approach to things. Highly tenacious, she is extremely persistent and will not stop at anything to achieve her goals. She was a big admirer of Sherlock Holmes and his exploits, and was the one who came with the idea of resurrecting him with futuristic technology knowing full well he is the only one who can give the team an advantage against Doctor Moriarty.
Like her ancestor, however, she often butts heads with Holmes and is easily exasperated by his disregard of the standard protocol, but her relationship with him is overall fairly amicable, serving as the legendary detective's guide to the world of the future. She is also often quick to judge whoever suspects she considers guilty, and her rowdy methods when it comes to catching criminals can result in certain transgressions as evidenced by the first episode, but softens up slightly as the series progresses.
Lestrade is also willing to go against the rules as long as it is to achieve the greater good. Because of this she has a troubled relationship with her superior, Inspector Grayson, mainly due to his incompetence, continuous criticism and obsessive adherence for the rules. She also appears to have a bit of a fondness for sweet foods and desserts, such as donuts and cookies.
Powers and Abilities[]
Lestrade is a skilled physical combatant, often using martial arts and other types of hand-to-hand combat against her enemies. She is also very handy with her ionizer and will not hesitate to use it at any given opportunity. While she doesn't possess the same genius-level intellect as Holmes, she's still highly intelligent on her own, being the one who suggested the idea of reviving Holmes in the first place and being capable of connecting the dots and all manners of clues in every investigation she makes.
Biography[]
Lestrade is introduced in the very first episode of the series frantically driving after the mad French scientist Martin Fenwick, who is making a getaway with none other than Professor James Moriarty. She tries to convince her boss, Inspector Grayson, of the pourability of Moriarty having been somehow resurrected, but is rebuffed, after which she angrily returns her badge and breaks into the New Scotland Yard basement, where the body of Sherlock Holmes is preserved in honey and takes it to a biologist named Sir Evan Hargreaves who has developed a process of cellular regeneration, which restores Holmes' youth and revives him. Lestrade gives Holmes some educational videos to bring him up to speed on the advancements in the world since his era. She also has her compudroid Watson read Dr. Watson's journals to learn how to better assist Holmes, with the compudroid emulating Watson's persona. Knowing they are out of options, Grayson ultimately reluctantly agrees to let Holmes assist Lestrade in their crime-solving cases.
In episode 6, The Adventure of the Deranged Detective, Lestrade becomes mindlessly aggressive due to rogue nanotechnology, but is ultimately cured of her condition. She and Holmes would have multiple adventures fighting against Moriarty and his cronies, as well as many other villains, but the series was cancelled after 26 episodes, leaving their adventures without a proper conclusion.
