Bianca

Bianca Whitaker is the character of Dragon Quest V.

Appearance

As a child, Bianca was short, had long pigtails and wore a green cape with a long orange dress and wore jewelry like earrings and bracelets. As an adult, she wears an orange cloak with a green dress, she keeps her hair tied to a braid which hangs on the right side of her head. She is often sought after for her beauty as well, which is commented by both the men in Stockenbarrel and Mostroferrato.

Personality

Bianca is a very outspoken, adventurous, and slightly romantic. She enjoys being outdoors and traveling in search of adventures. She is also a bit tomboyish and describes herself as "being a bit rough around the edges".

Bianca works hard everyday, returning home only at night, so that she can provide for her father. This goes to show that despite being a dreamer, Bianca is also very reliable and responsible, which is commented by the people in the village of Stockenbarrel.

As a wife, Bianca keeps much of her personality and remains supportive to Madason's wishes of continuing his quest. She is overjoyed that she gets to travel with her husband once again and confesses to have always loved him. She is also very playful and cheerful, sometimes even getting in small competitions with Madason. She still shows her husband a lot of affection, often proclaiming that she will never leave his side.

As a mother, she is very close to her children as well as loving towards them. While worrying for her children, she still does enjoy the idea that they can all travel together as a family and embraces it fully, if not only for the fact that that way, she can make sure no one harms them.

Story

Bianca and Madason are childhood friends and she would take care of him and play together. She and her mother visit Whealbrook to get medicine for her father but the man they are looking for has yet to return. After Madason rescues the man, the herbalist makes the medicine and Pankraz and Madason escort Bianca and her mother back to Roundbeck.

Pankraz decides to stay for the night but gets infected by a cold passed to him by Bianca's father. While Bianca and Madason explore the town, they meet two kids who are bullying a sabrecub. After some discussion, they agree to give up the cat if they can defeat the ghosts at Uptaten Towers. Bianca and Madason sneak out of town to Uptaten Towers at nighttime and they put the spirits in the tower to rest; they are rewarded with a golden orb. When they return to town, word spreads of their journey and as such, the bullies surrender the cub. Bianca names the cat but her parents would not allow her to keep it so she gives the cub to Madason, and gives the cub a ribbon as a memento.

Between the first and second generations, things are not good for Bianca, as her parents sell the inn they so dearly used to run and move to Whealbrook. Thereafter, her mother passes away and Bianca is then forced to become the provider, as her father, ever the sick man, doesn't have much time to live either (something he keeps hidden from Bianca).

Bianca appears again in the second generation when Madason is searching for the Circle of Water. He visits her house and Bianca's father asks him if he would take care of Bianca when he passes away and confesses that she isn't actually his daughter and is actually adopted. They run to each other, talking about all the events that had happened, and while she is somewhat shocked from the news that he would marry soon, she decides to help him find the ring, wanting to have an adventure with Madason once more like he promised when they were young. She then unlocks the gate keeping Madason's ship at bay and helps him inside the cave, making their way through monsters to find the ring.

Upon returning to the Briscoletti household and delivering the second ring to Mr. Briscoletti, Madason is now to be married with Nera Briscoletti. However, Nera believes that Bianca has feelings for Madason and, despite Bianca's reassurance, wouldn't feel right for her to steal Madason from Bianca. If Madason picks Bianca as his bride, she confesses that she had always loved him and is overjoyed to finally be able to go off with him for more adventures. Now married, they receive Mr. Briscoletti's blessing and he lets them use his ship, which they use to reach the queendom of Helmunaptra. There, Queen Cleohatra reveals that she knows the story of Pankraz and that Madason is actually the Prince of Gotha, so they set out to find his lost home.

On the way to Gotha, Bianca passes out in the town of Battenberg, but the incident is brushed off as her just being exhausted. However, this incident happens again in Gotha and it is then revealed that Bianca is actually pregnant. Due to her pregnancy, she is unable to join Madason in his ritual of passage so that he can succeed to the throne of Gotha as part of the tradition. Just as he returns after completing his quest, Bianca enters labor and gives birth to twins.

Unfortunately, during Madason's coronation, Bianca is abducted. But before she is taken away, she is able to instruct the children's nanny to hide herself and the children from the kidnappers. Madason sets out to resuce her, but things take a turn for the worst when Ladja, the demon who killed Pankraz, reappears and turns the couple into stone statues, in which they remain so for 10 long years.

In the third generation, Bianca's still in her statue form and she's being kept in the temple Madason and other slaves were forced to build during his slavery. After Madason and their children defeat the temple's priest, they obtain the Ring of Life and they use it to bring Bianca back to life; she is reunited with her family after 10 years. The family then goes into Nadiria to save Madason's mother and defeat Grandmaster Nimzo.

If Madason does not pick Bianca, she returns to Stockenbarrel to be with her father, where Madason can visit her anytime. She doesn't marry, although she seems to have willing suitors in the village.

Trivia

  • Bianca has become something of a mascot for the Dragon Quest series over the years, being a fan favorite upon her original appearance, and is likely one of the most well known faces in the series, even to those who haven't played Dragon Quest V.
  • In the DS remake, Bianca seems to talk with a Cockney accent.
  • In the DS remake, Bianca is the only one of the three brides that has a traditional wedding in a church. Interestingly enough, she also has a more slender and typical wedding gown compared to Nera and Debora's.
  • Bianca seems to be the "canon" wife, as she has the most romantic scenes with the Hero as well more backstory and even shows up in the cover of both the original game and the DS remake. In addition, choosing her as the bride originally does not punish Flora, as she has a happy ending if not chosen. The Hero's children also have blonde hair on their artwork, further supporting this theory.
  • Her appearance is similar to Android 18 (Lazuli) from the Dragon Ball series.
