Bifur is one of the secondary protagonists in JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit and in The Hobbit film trilogy by Peter Jackson.
He was a companion to Thorin Oakenshield and Bilbo Baggins on a quest to reclaim Erebor from Smaug.
The Hobbit
In The Hobbit, Bifur plays a minor role. He appeared at Bag End with Bombur, Bofur, and Thorin Oakenshield and the last group to arrive and played a clarinet. When the Wargs attacked them, Bifur shared a tree with his cousins. Bifur, Bofur and Bombur were hte last to show up at Beorn's house when they were telling him of their adventures.
After the barrel ride down the River Running both Bifur and Bofur came out fairly dry and not very knocked about, but they lay down and refused to do anything.
On the doorstep on the side of the Lonely Mountain, when Thorin commented that the next day was the beginning of the last week of autumn, Bifur pointedly added, "And winter comes after autumn".
Bifur fought in and survived the Battle of Five Armies. He was given his share of the treasure by Dáin Ironfoot, and made his home in Erebor.
The Hobbit (1977 film)
Bifur appears in the Rankin and Bass animated film adaptation of The Hobbit. However, he hardly ever speaks and only speaks in unison with the rest of the dwarves.
Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy
In the film adaptation, Bifur is portrayed by William Kircher. He suffers from a head injury from an ax imbedded in his head, reverting him to only speak in the Dwarves' tounge. In the extended edition of The Battle of the Five Armies, Bifur loses the ax when he came in Bofur's defense. He is able to speak Westron again. Bombur attempts to give the ax back to his cousin, but Bifur angrily discards it, no longer wanting it.
