Markus Grimshaw, also known as Black Samson, is a supporting character in the Image Comics comic series Invincible and its animated adaptation of the same name.
He was one of the original member of the Guardians of the Globe, before he lost his powers. After they were killed, he joined the new roster and later regained his powers.
He is voiced by Khary Payton, who also voices his Cyborg from Teen Titans, his reboot incarnation, Drebin from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Rafiki in The Lion Guard, Ripcord in G.I. Joe: Renegades, Grimlock from Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015), Wasabi from Big Hero 6 the series, and Ezekiel from The Walking Dead.
Biography[]
Black Samson was originally a member of the Guardians of the Globe for many years and helped the team in missions including their first meeting with Omni-Man. Unfortunately, Samson someone lost his powers and was kicked off the team.
After an unknown assailant took out all the Guardians, a new roster was to be decided by Robot. During then tryouts, Samson was able to beat an electric based super-heroine name Throwbolt with his super suit. After he won, he helped he back on her feet. He was chose by Robot to join the team. While on the team, he originally had an antagonistic relationship with his teammate, Rex Splode, due to his rude and arrogant behavior.
During a mission to save Invincible from Machine Head’s henchmen, Samson was critically injured by Battle Beast, along with Invincible and Bulletproof (Monster Girl in the series). They were all rushed to the hospital. He was out for weeks.
During a battle with Omnipotus, Samson regains his powers, and manages to defeat Omnipotus. In the series, he managed to regain his powers while his was in the hospital.

Being a veteran hero and one of the last members of original Guardians of the Globe, Black Samson takes his job as a hero extremely seriously and is shown not to tolerate insubordination or immature behavior, primarily from Rex, who he has a very antagonistic relationship with at first because of his rude and arrogant behavior. He also demonstrates considerable bravery, both in his willingness to remain a hero even though he lost his powers and even throw himself into danger with little hope of victory, such as shedding his armor to save Invincible after he was critically injured by Battle Beast.
Samson is also shown to be somewhat sensitive about his lack of powers, it being part of the reason he wasn’t with the Guardians for a while. Though he does not allow this to stop him from being a hero, it can cause him to lash out at others very easily.
After regaining his powers, he seems to have mellowed out somewhat and while he is something of stickler for rules, he is not inflexible, happily celebrating Monster Girl's recovery with the others and embracing to others as teammates. Even before joining the new Guardians he was shown to be cordial, with a sense of sportsmanship, as was the case during his tryout for the Guardians, most notably helping a candidate he just beat pick herself back up.
