~ Blackjack. |
Blackjack is a major character in the 2013 video game Killzone: Mercenary.
He is the owner of Blackjack Armories, who specialises in providing high-end weaponry to different organisations to profit off from it. He later becomes one of the key players in the Second Extrasolar War, who assists Arran Danner and later Justus Harkin during the conflict in stopping Vyktor Kratek and the Helghast, Alex Grey and the ISA, and subsequently Anders Benoit and the Phantom Talon Corp.
Despite that, however, Blackjack is seen as an unscrupulous and pragmatic businessman, who doesn't hesitate to arm both sides of the conflict, as well as various mercenary groups, for means of profit.
He is voiced by Trevor White.
Appearance[]
His face is often obscured in his appearances in Mercenary. He has a bald head. He is seen wearing a pair of black sunglasses, rings in his right hand, a watch and a black business outfit.
Personality[]
The Blackjack is a charismatic and enigmatic business genius who is renowned for his business acumen but who appears more focused on profiting from the conflict by arming numerous mercenary organisations for his personal advantage with one goal in mind: money. He goes so far as to arm both sides for nefarious motives other from financial gain.
Despite his meticulous nature, the Blackjack has displayed some semblance of morality, as seen by his hatred for the Helghast and Kratek for using Helghast civilians to enhance the Eschaton Virus, as well as for Grey for trying to use the Virus to destroy Helghan in an effort to end the conflict as quick as possible.
Background[]
Past Life[]
Blackjack was born from Earth's Eastern European region in the late 2220s, which was one of the colonies settled by migrants. He was described as "a bright but rebellious child, with a precocious talent for technology" when he was a teenager.
The name "Blackjack" eventually came to be linked with criminal groups operating mostly on the black market in the outlying colonies. Blackjack gained notoriety early on for carrying out a number of prominent cyberattacks against Earth authorities.
Blackjack took advantage of the conflict that erupted between Earth and the outer colonies to establish contacts with both colonial warlords and weaponry dealers. He first started off by providing weapons for other minor colonial conflicts, but he quickly established a reputation as a high-ranking supplier of advanced weapons to military personnel.
Killzone: Mercenary[]
During the Helghast conflict on Diortem in Southern Vekta, Blackjack served as an underground weapons dealer for several mercenary organisations, including the Phantom Talon Corp. One of Phantom's mercenaries named Arran Danner was said to be Blackjack's preference. Danner insisted on having access to Blackjack's weapons throughout his stay in Phantom.
Blackjack "defected" the ISA by joining the Helghast, but after assisting Danner, he was able to escape detection. Blackjack assisted Danner in achieving his goals because he thought that Eschaton Virus deployment and his death would be "bad for business" rather than a real threat to civilization. He helped Danner defeat Vyktor Kratek by hacking into his communications and providing him with further information to help ensure his survival. Kratek had planned to turn on Danner as soon as his usefulness wore out. Blackjack commandeered Kratek's Overlord from a distance after Danner fought his erstwhile ally and archenemy Anders Benoit in order to get Danner and Justus Harkin out of Facility X01 before it catches fire. He commanded Danner to eliminate the Virus for good.
Eventually, Blackjack showed that his underlying motivation of stopping Grey, Kratek, and Benoit — as is typically the case — was financial gain rather than a sincere desire to put an end to the conflict for good measure. The loss of Grey, Kratek, and Benoit, together with the virus's destruction, meant that the battle would not come to an immediate conclusion. Blackjack started generating money immediately after the nuclear war that destroyed Pyrrhus, among other things by selling anti-radiation drugs he had 'conveniently' stored up. The information pertaining to Danner and Justus was then purged out as Blackjack used his expertise and connections to keep them hidden while they were on the run.
