lades is one of the emergency Autobot group called the Protectobots, and a minor character in the Transformers franchise. He transforms into a UH-1 Iroquois Helicopter and forms into the right arm of Defensor. He is a rough and tough warrior who prefers close combat with his enemies - the Decepticons - by slashing them with his rotors. Such attitude often put him at odds with the other, more peace-loving Protectobots. Despite this, his enthusiastic & hard-working spirit as well as loyalty grants him trust & appreciation from them (especially his superior - Hot Spot).

Blades was voiced by Frank Welker.

Cartoon[]

Season 2[]

When the Insecticons attacked an inhabited city on Earth in The Revenge of Bruticus, Optimus Prime called upon the Protectobots to evacuate the civilians caught in the crossfire. Later, as Earth's orbit was diverted to the Sun by the Combaticons, while Inferno and Red Alert fought the flames, Blades saved civilians trapped by the fires. Soon afterwards he was spraying his limited supply of coolant onto the flames, but was concerned that he was running out and couldn't cool down the whole planet.

In B.O.T, Blades, as part of Defensor, blew up Bruticus. Afterwards, he was with the Protectobots when they arrived to save some window-washers from a burning skyscraper. Blades blew the workers from their dangling platform, so that Streetwise would manage to catch them. Later still, Blades and the other Protectobots were ordered to help defend Autobot Headquarters from a Decepticon attack. They merged into Defensor and activated his force field, which almost immediately deactivated, allowing the Decepticons to blast Defensor back into his component parts.

Season 3[]

In The Ultimate Weapon, the Protectobots were sent to aid the Dutch authorities in the Netherlands with roving gangs. Blades saw a skirmish but was shot down by Galvatron. During the following battle, First Aid managed to save Blades while they were covered by the other Protectobots. First Aid took him back to Metroplex for repairs, and Blades painfully transformed into robot made. While Blades recuperated, the Combaticon Swindle managed to steal Metroplex's transformation cog, and First Aid left the Autobots when he failed to stop the theft. Unfortunately, just as First Aid left, the Autobots were called upon to deal with a rampaging Trypticon. Hot Spot ordered the remaining Protectobots to combine into Defensor even without First Aid, and they successfully saved a train full of civilians. After First Aid returned to the Autobots, Blades ferried him into Metroplex while the giant Autobot was battling Trypticon, enabling the medic to restore his cog, and Metroplex'striumph.

Comics[]

According to the UK Comics, in Second Generation, Blades and the Protectobots were first seen in a vision, induced by the Creation Matrix, by Buster Witwicky. As part of this "second generation", Blades and his fellow Protectobots combined into Defensor and fought the Decepticon combiners Bruticus and Menasor while defending the Pullen Power Plant. The Protectobots were eventually given life by the Matrix, but the Decepticons used a cerebro-shell to siphon off the Matrix to create the Protectobots rival Special Teams.

In Afterdeath, Blades and the Protectobots went with Optimus Prime to thwart a Decepticon plot to steal the energy-converting hydrothermocline. While battling Megatron and the Combaticons, the two sides were instead persuaded to fight within a virtual reality by Ethan Zackary, rather than risking it being destroyed. Uploaded to the computer game Multi-World, Blades was partnered with Groove, and they maneuvered through an area called the Cloud-Steppes, where cities floated on clouds and absurdly long walkways were supported underneath them. The Combaticon flyers cut loose one of the walkways, sending Groove and a group of Cloud-Steppers flailing and falling. Against his better judgement, Blades caught the falling humanoids instead of saving his teammate. This proved to be a good idea, as the Cloud-Steppers managed to blind the Combaticons until Groove shot them down. In the end, Optimus Prime declared himself the loser of the game, and so Blades and the other Protectobots watched their leader detonate before their eyes.

In Funeral for a Friend, Blades was among the Autobots watching Ratchet trying and failing to revive Optimus Prime.

In Ancient Relics, Blades had a featured role as he was sent out by new Autobot leader Grimlock to search for the deserters Blaster and Goldbug. Following Transformer lifesigns, he was attacked by Action Force and came close to retaliating before remembering he was an Autobot. The group promptly encountered Megatron and Blades proved his credentials by saving Wild Bill when he was shot down. Grimlock and the human-built robot Centurion joined them but, with the battle hopeless, Flint ended up ordering an air strike on Megatron, even though Grimlock was in the blast area. Blades managed to carry Grimlock to safety after Centurion volunteered to take his place holding Megatron in position.

In Used Autobots, Blades and the other Protectobots tracked Blaster, Goldbug and the Throttlebots to a used car yard, where they encountered both the Combaticons and human anti-robot organisation RAAT. After a battle with the Combaticons, the Protectobots took Blaster prisoner. In Child's Play, they were again attacked by the Combaticons, with Blades battling Vortex. They formed Defensor to combat Bruticus, but ultimately relied on Blaster to defeat Bruticus and save a group of human children, after which Hot Spot let him go. Although Blades was apparently left behind on Earth when most of the Autobots left in the Ark, he was shown on board in the following story, Spacehikers, welcoming Blaster back on board.

In Prime Target, Blades and the other Protectobots were guarding a copy of Optimus Prime's personality disc. They were relieved by Autobot Powermasters Getaway, Joyride and Slapdash so they could investigate a raid by the Combaticons, but failed to stop the raid or stop the Decepticon Powermasters stealing the disc.

In the post-movie storyline, Blades was seen battling against a large scale Decepticon assault in The Legacy of Unicron and accompanying Rodimus Prime to liberate Autobot City from the Quintessons in Space Pirates.

Primary function: Air Support[]

Abilities[]

  • In helicopter mode, Blades can travel at 400 mph (~ 644 km/h) for up to 1,200 miles (~ 1931 km).
  • He has great physical strength with above-average endurance & intelligence. While he is skilled for his role (Air Support), he prefers his unconventional "street fight" style for offense rather than attacking from above.
  • He serves as one of the limbs (mostly the right arm) for the gestalt form of the team - Defensor.
  • In some occasions, he combines with his teammates (aside Hot Spot), Heatrock & Skyfeather to form other special gestalt known as Gaia Guardian. Said combiner's components can also combine with Hot Spot to form an even stronger one known as God Guardian.
  • Sometimes, he becomes the left arm of a special gestalt known as Comperian or the left leg of another special gestalt named Autobot Super Scramble in which he provides speed & mobility.

Arsenal: Blades has significantly above average firepower[]

  • His helicopter mode is equipped with two rocket launchers fed with armor-piercing "smart" rockets that can seek their targets based on digitally encoded images which they can record on the battlefield. These launchers are mounted on the outside of his thighs in robot mode.
  • In robot mode, he also wield a photon pistol that can shoot intense beams of lights with the equivalent brightness of 5,000 watt lightbulbs. Such effect can even blind some Transformers with the most heavily shielded optical sensors.
  • His rotors can be detached and used as melee weapons when he chooses to brawl with his enemies in hand-to-hand combat.

Weaknesses[]

  • Winds more than 40 mph (~ 64 km/h) greatly affect his maneuvering. Stronger winds (more than 60 mph ~ 97 km/h) can make him prone to crashing if he is caught in.
  • His rotor blades require maintenance after every 5,000 miles of usage (~ 8,047 km) to avoid metal stress fractures. Such maintenance can be more frequent if he put them through more punishment (including when he uses them to brutalize the Decepticons).

Trivia[]

  • Blades is known as Graze (グレイズ Gureizu) in Japan.
