The Blood Angels are major protagonists in Warhammer 40,000. The IXth Legion lead by their beloved Primarch Sanguinius, these fearless warriors specialized in unrelenting assaults and favored striking from above, overpowering their foes with their unmatched close quarters combat. Due to a flaw in their Gene-Seed, the Blood Angels inherited vampiric traits, giving them a thirst for blood and could be particularly vicious in melee fighting. It also came with two major genetic defects, The Red Thirst, and ultimately The Black Rage. Despite this, they remain loyalists and defenders of what is good in the galaxy.

The Blood Angels were The Emperor's wrath. Their arrival saw them descend from on high in a blaze of glory, ready to lay waste to the foes of the Imperium of Man in dominant fashion. While they loved to onslaught their foes from above, Blood Angels were among, if not the greatest melee combatants of all Space Marines, having a grace that the World Eaters or Space Wolves lacked while also able to masterfully execute their battle tactics. Due to their Gene-Seed, Blood Angels did harbor a degree of sadism and especially bloodthirst, and it was a trial to keep this side of themselves in check, for if they gave in they could become just as crazed as their fallen brothers of Khorne. Still, their courage and honor was unquestionable, and they always strove to be a shining vanguard for their brethren.
However, their Gene-Seed inflicted two increasingly terrible curses upon them, something all Blood Angels knew and would tragically ultimately succumb to. The first was The Red Thirst, the lesser of the two. The Red Thirst took place in exceptional moments of violence and heated combat when a Blood Angel's anger would grow out of control. It granted them increased physical prowess and a major thirst for blood, and could make an Astartes forsake common sense and strategy in favor of sheer ferocity. This would be temporary, and usually wore off after a period of time. The second was the dreaded and notorious Black Rage. The death of their Primarch at the hands of Horus unleashed a a psychic shock that scarred their Gene-Seed for all time, and is considered to be the ultimate fate of all Blood Angels. The Black Rage takes a Blood Angel's powers to drastically greater heights than The Red Thirst, turning them into a nigh unstoppable berserker able to decimate almost any foe. However, unlike the Thirst, The Black Rage is considered permanent. Entering a psychotic frenzy, the Rage makes a Blood Angel think they are their fallen Primarch, standing before Horus and overcome with anger and hatred to strike him down. They will destroy anything in their way, friend or foe alike, and tragically are almost always executed afterwards, for death is the only real way to end the Rage once and for all.
