Jaime Reyes, also known as the third Blue Beetle, is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Aquaman) of the animated superhero TV series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold. He is a young superhero working with Batman powered by a blue scarab.

Bio[]

El Paso, Texas native Jaime Reyes thought the closest he would ever get to Batman was the posters adorning his walls, but when a mysterious alien technology device turned him into the hero Blue Beetle, the fanboy's wildest dreams became a reality. Jaime can't help but tackle every mission with wide-eyed wonder and brings a youthful buoyancy to even the toughest fights.

History[]

Backstory[]

Jaime Reyes became the current Blue Beetle after discovering the Blue Beetle Scarab in El Paso that had been belong to his predecessor Ted Kord, who was unable to unlock the artifact's power. Jaime is a superhero fan and assist Batman in superheroism.

Story[]

In "The Rise of The Blue Beetle!", Jaime gets recruited by Batman into helping stop a meteor from crashing into Earth. However, when trying to destroy the meteor the Beetle Scarab created a hyperspace portal that teleported Jaime and Batman to an alien world in which its vulnerable denizens, the Gibbles, needed the Blue Beetle to defeat space pirate Kanjar Ro, who has been distilling the Gibbles for energy. There, Jaime and Batman discovered that there was another (alien) Blue Beetle that preceded Earth's Blue Beetles, who protected the Gibbles and was murdered by Kanjar Ro. Jaime was reluctant to help the Gibbles, but Batman helps him in rallying the Gibbles into an army to fight against Kanjar Ro and his crew. In their fast battle, Jaime became overconfident and was quickly defeated when Kanjar Ro uses the Gamma Gong to damage his scarab suit and exposed without it. Jaime was then captured by the space pirate and his scarab was removed and harnessed by Kanjar. Once Kanjar Ro uses the scarab to battle Batman, Jaime learns to think for himself as advised by Batman to free himself. He then uses Kanjar Ro's Gamma Gong on its owner to take back his scarab and allowing the Gibbles to blast down Kanjar Ro. Following Kanjar Ro's defeat, the Gibbles honored Blue Beetle and Batman's heroism, though the latter was believed to be a sidekick to Jaime and built a smaller statue of him in comparison to a larger statue of their Blue Beetle. After returning to Earth, Jaime and Batman find themselves back in space above Earth, a second after they left. Given enough time to stop the meteor Jaime and Batman proceed to destroy the said object.

In the prologue of "Invasion of the Secret Santas!", Blue Beetle and Batman fight Sportsmaster for attempting to crash a Christmas bowling tournament. Blue Beetle fights the henchmen with enhanced muscles instead of cannons to avoid destruction on the place. After Sportsmaster's defeat, Blue Beetle offers Batman to come for Christmas Eve dinner but he declines.

In "The Fall of The Blue Beetle!", after having a talk with his friend Paco, Jaime came to wonder if he is really worthy as a superhero. He then searches for Batman and finds him battling Doctor Polaris, and finds only that Batman considers Jaime is no better than his predecessor, Ted Kord and refuses to talk anymore of his former ally. Upset, Jaime have to decide to do research on Ted Kord. Via a internet search from the Scarab, Jaime finds Ted Kord's base of operations at Kord Enterprises in Hub City. There, he discovers a vehicle of the old Blue Beetle, the Bug. Inside it he discovers a flight log to Science Island and activates it in the hope to find Ted. On the island Jaime finds who he believes to be Ted, but in fact his uncle Jarvis Kord who sought to conquer the world with his nephew's technology. Jaime was then tricked by Jarvis into activating an army of robotic blue beetles for what Jaime believes that he is doing a humanitarian effort for the world. Eventually, Jaime discovers Jarvis' plans and was quickly subdued by Jarvis. After joining with a captured Batman, Jaime learns of Ted's ascension as the Blue Beetle and his self-sacrifice against his uncle. Jaime and Batman eventually freed themselves and stop Kord from destroying Science Island. After leaving the island, Jaime learns he was indeed chosen by the scarab but that alone does not make him a hero—his choice in doing the right thing does.

In "Aquaman's Outrageous Adventure!", Blue Beetle was fighting Planet Master and was close to losing but Aquaman came to the rescue and Blue Beetle was excited to finally meet him. They fight Planet Master together and defeat him. Blue Beetle request to name the adventure which Aquaman allows but before he could finish it, Aquaman interrupted him and ran to his family.

In the prologue of "Cry Freedom Fighters!", Blue Beetle saves Stargirl from Mantis and gets offended that she sees him as a knock-off but he fights and taunts Mantis as he shows that it's part of his plan, then as Mantis is enraged enough both heroes overload him with energy defeating the villain and Stargirl taking Mantis away as Blue Beetle has earned her respect.

In "Darkseid Descending!", Blue Beetle gets recruited to join The Justice League International and fights Darkseid and his army with his team.

Powers & Abilities[]

The Scarab grants Jaime a large array of powers and weaponry. While originally lacking even the ability to turn into the Blue Beetle, he eventually gains better control over it. He has a variety of guns, melee weapons and the suit even grants him the ability to grow to a very muscular state. The armor also grants Jaime enough strength to lift a small truck, and allows him to survive unaided in space. The scarab produces anti-bodies of its own, which allows a regenerative healing factor to Jaime Reyes' body. Jaime also has a large amount of willpower allowing him to be master of the scarab rather than the other way around

Personality[]

Jaime Reyes is shown as a big fan of Super Heroes and often discusses them with his friend Paco. In Invasion of the Secret Santas, Jaime revealed that the scarab has started talking to him and calls him goober, however, in later episodes he simply calls the scarab armor. He considers the scarab a partner and a friend. Jaime is still willing to work with the scarab after Revenge of the Reach.

In Fall of the Blue Beetle, Jaime feels the need to have been chosen instead of the scarab finding him as a result of dumb luck. Nevertheless, Jaime at times also shows a goofy side and often provides comic relief with his expressions, jokes, and loud mouth.

Jaime also can become a bit prideful, and how much he talks seems to get on other heros' nerves. On a side note, he has shown to be somewhat a flirt and tries to get the attention of the other female superheroes such as Huntress, Fire, and Ice but to no avail.
