Heroine Overview

What would you say if I get someone else to watch the sheep tonight?
~ Bo Peep to Woody.
I found my moving buddy.
~ Bo Peep to Buzz.

Bo Peep is a supporting character in the Disney/Pixar Toy Story franchise.

Bo Peep is a porcelain toy shepherd with a trio of sheep (Billy, Goat, and Gruff), close companion and best friend to Giggle McDimples, and Woody's love interest. She is the lost toy of Molly Davis and former favorite toy of Andy Davis.

During her several years with Molly and Andy, Bo developed relationships with the other toys and became the close friend and love interest of Woody. She later became a close acquaintance to Buzz Lightyear and Jessie.

During Andy’s playtime, he would portray Bo as the damsel in distress, or hostage of “One-Eyed Bart,“ who would eventually be rescued by Woody, Buzz, and possibly Jessie. She was even considered to be one of Andy’s favorite toys, even though he wasn’t her direct owner.

During the events of Toy Story 3 and before the events of Toy Story 4, Bo Peep made the decision to run wild and become a lost toy forever. Eventually, she decided to help lost toys find their owners, and later met Giggle McDimples, where they became close friends and companions.

She is voiced by Annie Potts.

History[]

Toy Story[]

Bo Peep is a supporting character in the first Toy Story movie. She is used by Andy Davis in the beginning. A day later, she grabs Woody to thank him about watching the sheep. The next day, Bo Peep alerts Buzz Lightyear to avoid falling out the window when he tries to save a Combat Carl from being blown up by Andy's next door neighbor, the toy-butchering Sid Phillips. That evening, when Woody knocks Buzz out the window, the toys get angry, accusing Woody of trying to knock off Buzz in a fit of jealousy because Buzz was Andy's favorite toy now instead of Woody, especially Mr. Potato Head and Hamm, who saw the whole thing. Bo Peep attempts to stop the angry toys from ambushing Woody, but Andy makes them retreat and freeze when they hear him coming. That night when Andy returns from Pizza Planet, she and the other toys heard Andy saying that Woody was missing. While Mr. Potato Head and Hamm are content thinking Woody got what he deserved for his actions against Buzz, Bo Peep starts to worry where Woody was, voicing her concern to Slinky. The next day, Bo Peep and the other toys are surprised that Woody and Buzz are in Sid's house.

Woody tricked the toys when attempting to get to Andy's house by imitating Buzz Lightyear, but Woody accidentally reveals Buzz's severed arm, shocking the toys. This finally causes Bo Peep to begin doubting him while the other toys believe that Woody really did murder Buzz. That night, before moving day, after Mr. Potato Head refused to help Woody and Buzz get away from Sid, she was worried about Woody. Upon seeing Andy sadly sleeping in his bed with his cowboy hat in his hand, she misses him showing that she believes that Woody didn't harm or kill Buzz. The next day, she and the other toys are being moved to a new home.

While on the way to their new home, Woody is thrown overboard by Mr. Potato Head, who believes he was trying to get rid of another toy. Bo Peep could only watch as there was nothing she could do to stop the toys from what they were doing. However, as the toys are celebrating getting rid of Woody, Lenny the windup toy binoculars spots Woody and tells everyone that he's riding RC and Buzz is with him. Bo Peep sees him with Buzz on RC, realizing that Woody is telling the truth, making the toys realize that what he did to Buzz was an accident, making all of them, especially Mr. Potato Head, become guilt-ridden and horrified by their behavior against Woody, and help them aboard the truck, while Woody and Buzz board Andy's car. Bo Peep feels happy when Woody is reunited with Andy again. As a result, come Christmastime at the Davis family's new home, as everyone gathers to hear Sarge and his Bucket O' Soldiers recon team report in on Andy and Molly's gifts, as Woody goes to join them, Bo yanks him back to her with her crook, and reveals her sheep dangling mistletoe overhead, at which point when Woody asks about it, Bo tosses her crook aside and smothers Woody with kisses before letting him go to join Buzz while she joined everyone on the floor to listen in. She also had taken off her bonnet for this after been seen wearing it for the rest of the film.

Toy Story 2[]

Bo Peep returns in Toy Story 2; this time she is a minor supporting character. She is seen in the beginning again, coming back from Molly's room with a few other toys with the bad news that she couldn't find Woody's hat there after it went missing. When Woody starts growing frustrated by the humiliation that he'll be going to Cowboy Camp with Andy without his hat, she explains that Andy can take him to Cowboy Camp with or without his hat, calming him down before she tries to get him into a kiss with her crook, only to be interrupted when her sheep cause some trouble for Rex, forcing her to whistle to her sheep to leave Rex alone. When Slinky returns with Woody's hat and reveals that Buster, Andy's new dog he got for Christmas in the first film, had possession of it, as everyone panics when they hear Buster coming, Bo shouts for Woody to hide before Buster finds him. Later, when Andy decides to have some fun with the toys before he leaves for Cowboy Camp, Bo is the damsel-in-distress as Andy simulates her being held hostage by Hamm as the evil Dr. Porkchop and his Bucket O' Soldiers, asking Woody which way she'll die, only for Woody to call in Buzz to stop Hamm and save Bo. Unfortunately, when Andy celebrates afterwards, he accidentally rips Woody's arm at the shoulder when he yanks on it too hard after locking arms with Buzz. Upset over that, Andy tells his mom, and Woody is put on the shelf, much to the concern of Bo and the others. When Woody then sees that Mrs. Davis is having a yard sale, he orders an emergency roll call to make sure no toys have been taken out to be sold, given away, or worse: Thrown in the trash. However, when Wheezy is taken, Woody mounts a daring rescue with Buster to help him, but is left outside where he is found by Mrs. Davis when the proprietor for Al's Toy Barn, Al McWiggin, finds him and asks if he is for sale. When Mrs. Davis refuses and puts Woody away where she'll take him back into the house to be mended, the moment her back is turned, and to Bo's horror, Al steals Woody from right out under Mrs. Davis' nose and escapes in his car, leaving Bo to wonder why anyone would want to steal Woody. Once they realize who kidnapped him, Buzz mounts a rescue mission, taking Rex, Slinky, Hamm, and Mr. Potato Head with him, while Bo remains behind with Mrs. Potato Head and the others, wishing them good luck, and asking Buzz to pass on a kiss from her to Woody.

After Woody returns home with Buzz and the others, bringing with him Jessie and Bullseye, Andy personally sees to mending Woody's arm himself, and when Woody shows off how much stronger is now is thanks to Andy's DIY repair efforts, Bo admits she likes it, saying it makes Woody look tough. She then sees that Wheezy got a new squeaker, and watches with Woody as Wheezy then begins singing "You've Got A Friend In Me", before being joined by Buzz and Jessie to watch the rest of Wheezy's performance together.

Toy Story 3[]

Bo Peep appears briefly in Toy Story 3. She is seen at the movie's beginning. She only appears in Andy's childhood. It is revealed that sometime between the second and third films, she was given away. Woody is still heartbroken over losing her.

Toy Story 4[]

Bo Peep returns in Toy Story 4 as one of the central protagonists. The film shows that sometime in between the second and third films Bo assisted Woody and the other toys in rescuing RC from being washed away in the rain. However, upon getting RC safely inside Molly's bedroom, Mrs. Davis enters the room and collects Bo Peep to give away to a friend. Woody attempts to rescue Bo, but she refuses to go back with him because she isn’t one of Andy's toys and being given away is one of the hardships a toy might have to face as their owner grows up. Bo hints that Woody could come with her, as toys can be misplaced and lost, but although Woody considers it, he decides to stay after hearing Andy searching for him.

Nine years later, Bo Peep is reunited with Woody at a playground while she is helping lost toys find new owners. When Woody requests her help to rescue Forky from Second Chance Antiques, she initially declines, stating that she can’t handle being around Gabby Gabby, but after Woody persuades her on how important Forky is to Bonnie, she agrees to help.

The two reach the roof of the antique store, where they meet up with Buzz as well as his newfound “friends” Bunny and Ducky; the group then heads inside, where Buzz, Ducky, and Bunny retrieve the key, while Woody and Bo recruit a friend of Bo’s named Duke Caboom. The group then infiltrates a china cabinet where Gabby Gabby is holding Forky hostage, but in the struggle with Gabby’s henchmen and the store owner’s cat Dragon, they barely escape, resulting in Forky being left behind, and Bo Peep’s sheep breaking one of their legs.

Woody tells Bo that they need to go back in there and rescue Forky, but after the chaos that ensued, Bo refuses. The two get into an argument, in which Woody ends up insulting Bo indirectly, telling her that loyalty is something a lost toy wouldn't understand. Heartbroken by his words, Bo Peep leaves.

As Bo and her friends return to the carousel, Giggle McDimples mocks Woody by mentioning how selfish he is to put his life on the line to rescue one toy. Upon hearing this, Bo realizes that that trait was what she liked about Woody, and convinces the others to return to the antique store.

When Bo arrives back at the antique store, she overhears Woody talking to Gabby Gabby after the latter is rejected by store owner’s granddaughter (even after Woody gives up his voice box to make it happen). Woody convinces Gabby to travel with him to be one of Bonnie’s toys, to which Bo Peep further convinces Gabby and reconciles with Woody.

Woody, Bo Peep, Gabby Gabby, and Forky regroup with the rest of the lost toys, where they all travel back to the carousel to meet up with Buzz and the rest of Bonnie’s toys. Upon reaching their destination, Woody and Bo Peep exchange goodbyes, knowing that they will likely never see each other again. Buzz on the other hand, tells Woody to “follow his inner voice”, implying that Bonnie would be alright without him. Realizing that Buzz is right, Woody changes his mind and decides to stay with Bo Peep. The shepherdess, upon hearing that Woody wishes to stay with her, jumps onto the canopy and embraces him, knowing that they will remain together again. They other toys then arrive and briefly reunite with Bo Peep, before having to say goodbye to their old friends, with Woody passing his sheriff star onto Jessie as a goodbye gift. Bo and Woody then watch from atop the carousel as Bonnie and her toys leave the fairgrounds.

During the mid-credit scenes, Bo, alongside Woody and the lost toys travel alongside the fair, releasing various carnival toys to hopeful children by rigging one of the fair games so that each kid always win a prize.

Quotes[]

Woody: Oh, great. That's just great. This'll be the first year I miss cowboy camp, all because of my stupid hat!
Bo: Woody, look under your boot.
Woody: Don't be silly. My hat is not under my boot.
Bo: Would you just look?
Woody: See? No hat. Just the word Andy.
Bo: Uh-huh. And the boy who wrote that would take you to camp with or without your hat.
Woody: I'm sorry, Bo. It's just that I've been looking forward to this all year. It's my one time with just me and Andy.
(Bo drags Woody with her staff)
Bo: You're cute when you care.
Woody: Bo! Not in front of Buzz!
Bo: Nah, let him look.
~ Bo comforting Woody when he complains that he can't go to cowboy camp with Andy because of his missing hat.
Woody: Forky's still in there. If we hurry, we can get him before they lock him up.
Ducky: You want us to go back in there?!
Duke: We barely got out alive!
Buzz: Woody, it's better if we wait.
Woody: No, no, no. There's no time. We can easily get back inside.
Buzz: But I saw Bonnie's--
Woody: By my count, there were only four dummies.
Buzz: But the backpack--
Woody: We outnumber them. So we have the advantage.
Bo: Woody, look at us! Nobody is with you. It's over, okay?
Woody: No. No, no, no. We are wasting time. We can do this.
Bunny: Come on, pullstring!
Giggle: It's not worth it.
Ducky: Yeah, yes! Listen to her!
Bo: Nobody wants this!
Woody: I do.
Bo: Why?
Woody: Because!
Bo: Why?
Woody: Just because!
Bo: Why?!
Woody: Because it's all I have left to do! I don't have anything else.
Bo: So the rest of us don't count?
Woody: That's...That's not what I meant. Bonnie needs Forky.
Bo: No! You need Bonnie! Open your eyes, Woody. There's plenty of kids out there. It can't be just about the one you're still clinging to.
Woody: It's called loyalty. Something a lost toy wouldn't understand.
Bo: I'm not the one who's lost. Let's get out of here. We've got a carnival that leaves in the morning.
Bunny: Come on.
Ducky: Mmm-hmm.
Bunny: We'll find our own kid.
Ducky: You're crazy.
Woody: Bo...
Bo: Bye, Woody. Good luck with Bonnie.

Trivia[]

  • Her name comes from the Mother Goose nursery rhyme character Little Bo Peep; a girl who had lost her sheep.
  • Originally Woody's love interest was envisioned to be a Barbie doll. However Pixar were unable to acquire the permission to use the Barbie licence, so Bo Peep was made to fill that role instead.
  • At first glance, Bo Peep's sheep appears to have three heads. But they are actually a trio of sheep clumped together (as more clearly seen in Toy Story 4).
  • Bo Peep losing her arm in Toy Story 4 is very similar to when Buzz lost his in Toy Story and when Woody lost his in Toy Story 2.
    • Bo Peep reattaching her arm in Toy Story 4 is very similar to Buzz having his arm reattached by the Mutant Toys in Toy Story and Woody having his arm reattached by the cleaner in Toy Story 2.
  • There is a Toy Story short titled Lamp Life that explains why Bo was absent in Toy Story 3.
  • Jennifer Aniston, Meg Ryan and Samantha Mathis were all considered for the role of Bo Peep before Annie Potts was cast.
