After helping Joyce work his camera, Bob hears his girlfriend hang up the phone.
Two days later, Bob arrives at the Byers house.
"Surprise! I would've called, but you said not to clog up the line."
Bob telling Joyce he brought Will some games that he can play with while he's sick.
Bob being told by Joyce that she'll call him later.
"They don't call me Bob the Brain for nothing."
(Joyce: "Bob!") "That's my name."

"Let me talk to you for a second."

Bob's attention shifting to a heart shape the drawings make up which Bob recognizes as a lake in Hawkins called "Lovers' Lake".

Later, Bob checks a map to help Joyce and the boys find their destination.
"What about Tippecanoe to Danford Creek?"
Bob waiting for Joyce and the boys to measure their makeshift map to compare the latitudes on his map.
"What about Danford to Jordan?"
Bob being asked by Joyce if he can do the math.
Bob, Joyce, Will, and Mike trying to do the math to figure out their destination.
"Well, it's hard. The ratio isn't exactly one-to-one."
"I mean, if you're twisting my arm, and you are twisting my arm, I would say that the X is..."
"Maybe a half mile southeast of Danford?"
Bob watching Joyce take his map.
Bob seeing the boys going to follow Joyce.
"What? Are we... we really going?"
Bob trying to calm a crying Joyce as an agonizing Will is treated by the doctors of Hawkins Lab.
The next morning, Bob and Mike watch over a sleeping Will.
Later, Bob is told by Joyce how Will was trapped in an alternate dimension called the "Upside Down".
"Yeah. Well, hey, whatever."-Bob upon being told by Joyce that the personnel of Hawkins Lab will make him sign documents.
"What kind of documents?"
Bob listening to Joyce explain what the government wants him to do in order to keep quiet about the true circle of Will's disappearance.

"I always thought stuff like this happened in movies and comic books."
"Certainly not in Hawkins."
"And certainly not to someone like you."
(Joyce: "Or you.") "Bob Newby, superhero."
Bob being asked by Joyce if he's cold.
"Uh, just a little jitters, I guess."
Bob insisting to Joyce that he's fine.
"It's not like you didn't warn me. This is not a normal family."
(chuckles) "You weren't kidding."
"It kinda makes my idea of moving to Maine sound a little less crazy, right?"
Bob deeply moved when Joyce tells him she doesn't find his idea of moving out of Hawkins crazy.

After Mike explains BASIC is a computer programming language, Bob asks Owens if he knows how to do BASIC, which he answers no.
Bob volunteering to turn the power back on himself as he's the only one who knows BASIC.
Bob comforting Joyce who gets worried over his safety.
"It's gonna be okay. Remember, Bob Newby, superhero."
Bob and Hopper taking stuff from a dead guard.
When Hopper asks if he knows how to use a gun, Bob says he does not.
