Bobby Marsh is a character in the novel The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor. He was a member of Brian Blake's original group before he became the Governor. Being a close friend to Brian's brother Philip Blake and travels with his group in hopes to find safety in the apocalypse.
Appearance[]
Bobby is described as being a 32-year-old Caucasian man with a heavy build, being stated as being, "portly; he is not exactly obese but overweight in his size XXL jeans, definitely the type of guy his high school classmates would call a butterball." He had long greasy brown hair that kept tied in the style of a rattail.
Personality[]
Bobby is generally a fun-loving and easygoing person, being noticeably cheery despite the harsh circumstances he and his group found themselves in. He had a tendency to counter traumatic and uncomfortable moments with nervous giggling, which briefly caused friction with Philip as he believed as he was laughing at his brother, only for Bobby to quickly apologize and state that he didn't mean anything wrong. This furthermore shows the compliant relationship Bobby had with Philip. Even before the apocalypse, Bobby yearned to please him and always made many attempts to reconnect with Philip after his wife died.
Story[]
Past[]
Bobby was born in 1971 and lived in Waynesboro, Georgia and grew up as an only child. In his teenage years, he went to Burke County High School and met Philip Blake and Nick Parsons in his first year. The three became very close friends, and they had tendency to share alcohol with each other while they were hanging out. Bobby only barely managed to graduate from high school. He went to junior college but dropped out at some point. In his adulthood, Bobby continued the late night hangouts together with Philip and Nick, due to Bobby being an only child, he longed for companionship with others, which caused him to stay in contact with his two friends even when they grew older. During one night in 1995, Bobby, Philip and Nick were drunk and went into the Starliter Drive-in Theater on Waverley Road. They sneaked in and broke into the projection booth. Bobby, waved his "fat little fingers" in front of the projector where Top Dog was playing, pranking the audience by making shadow silhouettes of rabbits and ducks appear on the screen, next to the flickering images of Chuck Norris spin-kicking Nazis. It was a favorable memory, especially for Philip, who laughed so hard at Bobby's shadow dolls that he thought he was going to puke. In 1996, Philip's daughter Penny Blake was born, causing the occasional night out with the friends to become less frequent. This became even more so after Philip's wife Sarah died in a car accident, but Bobby always desperately wanted to reconnect with his old friend, and when the three men did hang out again, it became clear that Philip did it to quietly escape from his stressful life as a single parent.
The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor[]
Bobby catches his breath next to a doghouse. He hears sound coming. The reanimated twelve-year-old from Brian's picture launches out of the doghouse's opening. Bobby jerks away from the undead the child as it attempts to pounce on his leg. Bobby tumbles sideways and yanks his leg away just in time as the boy bites down on the grass where Bobby's leg was only a millisecond earlier. Philip rushes towards Bobby and attempts to raise the railgun towards undead child. Bobby crawls away with his "ass crack showing pathetically" and gasps in a shrill manner like a little girl. The boy scuttles towards Bobby while he attempts to get on his feet, only for his legs to get tangled causing Bobby to fall on his back. The boy reaches him, puts his hand on his ankle, and then bites down on his leg. "Goddamnit!" Philip yells as he finally reaches them, putting the railgun towards the boy's head. But as he clicks nothing happens, due to the extension cord having pulled free from the outlet. The boy continues in it attempt to devour Bobby, biting down on his thigh which breaching his femoral artery and taking half his scrotum with it. Bobby's screaming turns into a howl as Philip yanks the undead child away from his friend, falling on the grass 20-feet away. Nick and Brian run out of the house towards them with Nick holding a pickaxe. Philip grabs Bobby and tries to stop him from squirming and screaming, as all the exertion is only making him hemorrhage faster. His wounds are bleeding profusely and Philip puts his hands on Bobby's leg wound which only stops the blood flow slightly. The undead child crawls back towards them but is finally put down by Nick and his pickax.
With the threat now fully dead, Nick puts his belt around his friend's leg and Bobby tries to talk, but he gives off the impression of someone in extreme cold, quivering his lips silently. Philip holds the man in his arms "like a giant baby". Bobby starts crying shallow rattling breathes while Philip attempts to comfort him. But it is clear to everyone that Bobby is not going to make it, which is especially clear to Bobby himself who lays in a sate of shock, "staring up at the gunmetal sky struggling to speak". Brian simply stares down at Bobby and Nick falls to his knees dropping the bandages he was ordered to get from Philip only moments ago.
Bobby's mutters something to Philip who grabbed one of the bandages, wanting to fix-up the wound but Bobby pushes it way. Philip tells him that it's going to be okay, "n-no it ain't. Stop saying that Phily... it's over...". Bobby's eyes roll to the back of his head for a moment, but he catches the nailgun being held by Brian and he points towards the muzzle, causing Brian to drop the tool. Bobby picks it up and points it at his temple, but Philip orders Brian to get the nail gun away from him. "P-please, Philly. J-just... do it..", Bobby pleads. Philip stands up and converses with Nick out of Bobby's earshot, as Philip tells Nick to bring supplies necessary for an amputation. Unbeknownst to them, Bobby has lost consciousness and lies on the ground stone still, which Brian makes clear to them. Bobby Marsh's eyes are closed, his chest doesn't move, and his mouth is slack, having fully died of his wounds. "Jesus Christ, no..." mutters Nick, staring at his dead friend. Everyone staters at Bobby for what feels like endless minutes, but they notice something stirring in his body, within the tendons of his legs and in the tips of his fingers, resembling nerve twitches. Nick and Brian back away while Philip comes closer. Bobby Marsh opens his undead pus-colored eyes, Philip points the nail gun on Bobby's forehead and shoots.
