Borf!
~ Bond's woof

Bond Forger is a major character in the Spy × Family franchise.

He's the pet dog of the Forger Family who was formerly a lab experiment known as Subject 8 of the nefarious "Project Apple" ran by the Ostanian government, which granted him precognition abilities. He's named after Bondman, the main protagonist of Anya Forger's favorite cartoon, Spy Wars.

He's voiced by Kenichirō Matsuda, who also voiced Robbie in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Batou in Ghost in the Shell: Arise, and Hulk in Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers and Marvel Future Avengers.

Appearance[]

Bond is a large, furry and white Great Pyrenees dog with black paws which, as Anya points out, resemble Bondman's gloves. His ears are short and droopy and his eyes are small, usually bearing a gloomy expression. After being adopted by Anya, he's given a special collar with a bow tie. When Bond is wet, it can be seen that he's actually really skinny underneath all the fur.

Personality[]

Bond is usually a very quiet and calm dog, who doesn't appear interested in typical dog past times, such as playing catch. Despite this, he's also a kind and brave dog who uses his precognition abilities in order to help others and especially children. Because of his size, Bond is also really intimidating whenever he needs to be, showcased when he scared a bulldog into giving Anya's gloves back. Bond is also prone to jealousy, especially towards Anya's toys. In one incident, he brutally mauled Anya's plush penguin, but ended up apologizing later.

Biography[]

Background[]

Bond backstory

Bond being experimented on

Before the events of the series, Bond was known as Subject 8 and was a test subject dog on "Project Apple", an underground research project ran by the Ostanian Government and sponsored by Born Industries. Their goal was to produce highly intelligent animals for military purposes. During these experiments, Bond was horrifically tortured and pushed to his limits, until he eventually developed a supernatural ability to see into the future.

After Project Apple was ended by the government, all the test animals were sold off into the black market. Bond was bought by the ostanian terrorist, Keith Kepler, who planned to turn him, as well as other dogs, into suicide bombers in order to assassinate the westalian Minister Brantz during his stay in the capital of Berlint. Shortly before being sold, Bond gets a vision of the Forger Family.

Spy × Family[]

While the Forgers are in a pet fair in order to adopt a pet for Anya (with Loid having excused himself to the bathroom in order to do an assigned side mission), Bond is being walked by two members of Keith's gang alongside another dog. While heading to the terrorists' hideout, Bond suddenly gets a vision and breaks free from their hold. He rushes towards a little boy who walking down the street with his mom, and proceeds to grab him with his mouth and pull, inadvertedly saving the kid from a falling sign. The boy thanks Bond who's then retrieved by the terrrorists.

While on their way, Bond passes in front of the fair and ends up catching the attention of Anya, who notices how large he is. When the two make eye contact, Bond recognizes her from one of his visions and Anya ends up reading his mind and intercepts Bond's vision of her family. Curious, Anya follows the dog outside of the kennel, choosing to not talk about it with her mother in order to not reveal her psychic abilities.

Anya runs with Bond

Bond and Anya running from Keith

Anya ends up finding Bond on the terrorists' hideout, where she overhears Keith and his gang talking about their plan to assassinate Minister Brantz. After she's noticed and restrained by a thug, Keith decides to murder Anya so she won't snitch on them. Seeing the little girl in danger, Bond breaks free from his leash and starts defending Anya from Keith, barking at them. The dog soon ends up getting another vision which is intercepted by Anya, of the phone in the room ringing. Shortly after the phone rings and the terrorists are distracted, Bond grabs Anya and runs away from the building, carrying her on his back.

While on their run, Anya realizes Bond's powers and finds out he's a psychic "just like her". She tries giving Bond directions, but the two just end up running in circles and coming face to face with Keith alongside his thug and his german shepherd. With Bond now exausted and tired from all the running, Keith orders the thug to grab Anya and kill her. Fortunately, Yor appears at last moment and saves Anya by knocking the thug unconscious, scaring Keith and his dog. After Anya tells the whole story to her mother, Yor checks out Bond to see if he has any bombs. Using his leash to tie the uncounscious thug, Yor finds the nearest public telephone in order to report the terrorists to the authorities. While waiting, Anya intercepts another future vision from Bond. This time, it showcases the same previous vision of her family, except Loid is missing. She then sees a clock tower ringing and an explosion in the city hall, followed by a vision of Anya finding the dead body of her father under rubble of a building and a declaration of war against Westalis. Horrified, Anya asks the dog if it's possible for them to change the future, to which he responds by woofing in agreement. The two then run away to the city hall, saying they would be delivering toilet paper for Loid.

When arriving at the place and finding the clock tower of the vision, Bond suddenly notices the scent of Keith, who was passing there, and grabs Anya in order for them to not get noticed by him. Upon reading his mind, Anya finds out Keith had planted a bomb in a building where the WISE agents were headed to. The two quickly head to the location of the bomb, where Anya tries to (and realizes she can't) defuse it, instead writing a message on the door using ketchup. Once Loid arrives there with another WISE agent, he notices Anya's message on the door, but doesn't understand it at first, thinking that the drawing of the bomb was an eggplant. His partner dismisses the message, and tries to open the door, but Loid stops him before he does, thinking that the situation is suspicious. After the bell tolls and the explosion doesn't happen, Anya and Bond cheer that their plan was successful.

After Keith is caught and arrested, the Forgers meet up once more at the pet fair. After each one of them explains their situation, Loid thanks Bond for saving Anya. Suddenly, Sylvia Sherwood shows up disguised as an SSS agent, saying that she needs to take Bond away, to which Anya responds by declaring she wants to keep him. While Loid tries to convince her to let go of Bond, Anya threatens to leave school, shocking him. Seeing her extreme reaction, Sylvia lets her keep the dog, but not before taking him for an examination, promising her that Bond would be fine and that he would be delivered to her house in no due time.

After Bond is officially adopted by the Forgers and makes himself at home, Anya tries to use her new pet as a way to bond with Damian Desmond in school, but that backfires after he asks her what is her dog's name and she does not have an answer. Anya keeps struggling to come up with a name for him since, at this point, she only referred to him as "doggy" (inu-san in japanese). The Forgers then go to a dog park in order to walk Bond. When asking her father for any ideas for a name, he says that it's better to give him a simple name with plosive letters as those are more understandable for dogs. Anya tries to get suggestions for names from other dog owners in the park, but to no avail. When it's time for them to go home, Anya realizes she lost her gloves somewhere, and sees that they were stolen by a random bulldog. While trying to get them back, the bulldog simply scares Anya, but Bond appears and uses his large size and intimidating aura in order to scare him. While giving Anya her gloves back, she ends up recalling an episode of Spy Wars where the main character Bondman helps retrieve Princess Honey's stomach warmer. This, combined with the fact that the dog's black paws resemble spy gloves, Anya decides to name him "Bond". After the two hang out together in their apartment, Anya finishes the day by falling asleep on Bond.

After this arc, Bond makes small appearances throughout the series. In the beginning of the Midterm Exams arc, in the scene where Yor comes home disappointed and with cuts on her hand, Bond gets a vision of Yor crying, which concerns Anya. Later on it's revealed that Yor was actually trying to learn cooking in secret in order to make a decent dish for her family. After she comes home and prepares a stew for Loid and Anya, Bond's vision comes to fruition as Yor cries in happiness after realizing that Anya and Loid actually liked her stew.

Trivia[]

  • Bond's backstory as a suicide dog bomber is likely a reference to real life events. In the Second World War, many dogs were used in the battlefield and trained to be "Anti-Tank Dogs", in which they would be used to destroy tanks by running up and slipping under them with explosives attached to their bodies. These dogs were primarily used by the Soviet and Russian armies.
  • Since Anya is shown to be able to read the minds of animals and forming coherent sentences, it's possible that Anya can read Bond's mind in order to understand what he's saying. So far in the story, this hasn't been used anywhere.
  • Bond was originally going to be named "Peanuts", after Anya's favorite snack, however, Tatsuya Endo dropped the idea because the name would highly remind people of another certain white dog from a similarly named comic strip series.
    • Interestingly enough, "Peanuts" was one of the names that Anya considered for the dog before settling down with "Bond", but Becky thought the name did not match his enormous size.
  • While in the series' universe, Bond is named after the character Bondman, his name is also a clear reference to the famous spy from Ian Fleming's novels, James Bond. His bowtie collar is also a reference to the iconic suit of the character.
