William "Bootstrap Bill" Turner Sr. is the overarching protagonist of Disney's Pirate of the Caribbean film trilogy. He is the father of Will Turner and former crew member of the Black Pearl under Captain Jack Sparrow and later Hector Barbossa. He also served as an unwilling crew member of the Flying Dutchman under Davy Jones before being set free by his son.
He was portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård.

Past[]
Bill Turner was born at some point in the late 17th century and lived on the isle of man with his uncle Seamus and aunt Erin. He at some point in his life married and had a son who they named William Turner. Bill would ultimately leave the family to go pirating. he would Join the crew of Captain Jack Sparrow aboard the Black Pearl. On which he would mutiny along with Hector Barbossa. However he would eventually be thrown off the ship after being strapped to a cannon and was send to the bottom of the ocean. When he was discovered by The Flying Dutchman Commended by Davy Jones, he joined the Crew out of desperation to escape the nightmare he was in.
Dead Man's Chest[]
Jack is approached one night by Bootstrap Bill Turner to tell him that Davy Jones was coming for him as his time as captain of the Black Pearl is up and that he needs to settle his debt with Jones. He would later be seen working aboard the Dutchman and reuniting with his son much to his horror which made him let go of a rope caused an accident where a cannon was dropped on the other members of the Dutchman's crew while working. When the bosun Jimmy Legs try's to whip Will Bootstrap gets in the way and offers to take it for him which takes the attention of Davy Jones Bootstrap tells Will is his son only for Jones to make Bootstrap to Whip Will instead. He then introduced Will to Wyvern and showed him as have become part of the Dutchman. Later he would play Liars Dice with Will and Jones and would lose to Jones with him resaving an eternity on the Dutchman. After Will Stole the Key To Davy Jones Chest he would leave the Dutchman but not before promising his father he would set him free. Bill would later watch in horror as Jones set the Kraken after his son. Later he was told he could spend some time alone with his thoughts.
At World's End[]
By the time of At World's End, Bootstrap is starting to lose himself and is becoming more and more part of the Ship. When he meets Elizabeth Swann and is told that his son is coming to free him he becomes very happy before he then sinks back into the wall of the cell he's in and becomes depressed again. He later alerted Davy Jones as James Norrington as he broke Elizabeth out and got her off the Dutchman. Later he would fight Will Turner and would lose before Will pinned him to the Dutchman before attacking Davy Jones. When he was later mortally wounded by Jones Bill started feeling his emotions again and realising that his captain had injured His son, he snaps and attacks Davy Jones in a fit of paternal outrage. While he is able to hold him of for a while he is over powered by the Sea Devil and pined to the Ship by his Claw. But before Jones could kill his newly traitorous crew member Will stabbed his Heart and he fell into the Maelstrom below. Bootstrap and the rest of the crew then got up and started chanting "Part of the ship, part of the crew." before bootstrap walks up to Will and cuts out his heart to save his life as the Dutchman sunk into Maelstrom. When the Dutchman Resurfaces, with Will Turner as the new captain and a clean slate of the Ship as the crew lost their aquatic characteristic as well as the parasites that they had taken over the years they along with the Black Pearl Fired upon Cutler Beckett's Ship the Endeavour causing it to explode and kill everyone on board. Bill would later be let go and aloud to live the rest of his life as a free man. Weather or not he is still alive by the time of Dead Men Tell No Tales is unknown.
Personality[]
Bill's personality as a crew member of the Flying Dutchman shows a sense of hopelessness and despair as well as a hint of cynicism. He is not as malicious as the other members of the crew as is more of a by stander in most conflicts. When he is later freed by his son he is a happier man who is relieved that he is no longer bound to the Dutchman.
