Brass is a supporting protagonist of the manga/anime series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
He is an elderly lump shaman who lived in Dermline Island and the adoptive grandfather of the titular protagonist Dai. He was later kidnapped by Zaboera to have Crocodine used him against Dai for an advantage, but later freed from the Dark Army's influence by Popp.
In the 1991 anime, he was voiced by Junpei Takaguchi in the film and Isamu Tanonaka in the series. In the 2020 anime, he was voiced by Kenichi Ogata in Japanese and Alec Willows in English.
Biography[]
As the baby boy got washed up to the shore of the Dermline Island, Brass took him under his wings and named him Dai. He wanted Dai to grew up as a Mage one day despite he has troubled controlling his magic. After Dai inadvertently brings a group of fake heroes to the island, he and the other monsters were attacked by them before they're taking away Gomechan. He and the other monsters later helped Dai get Gomechan back from the group of fake heroes, which Dai was later crowned with Crown of Champions and earning the title of Hero. The next morning, Dai whiningly demanded him to give back the Crown of Champions, unaware that Gomechan has took it.
Three months later, Princess Leona and her subjects arrived at the island for a ritual to receive a blessing from the Earth God. While waiting for Dai, Leona and Varon, Gome went to informed Brass that Dai and Leona are attacked until they were stopped by Temjin and his subjects so they would prevent from helping them both. While they were attacked by Varon's Killing Machine, Brass and the others witnessed Dai awakening his powers and destroyed the machine, defeating both Varon and Temjin as result. After the ritual, Brass was seeing Leona left to return to her kingdom.
When the dark magic has corrupted him and the other monsters, they were saved by Avan and Popp as he casts a magical golden barrier with Glimmer spell, protecting the island and freeing the monsters from dark magic. After defeating duo of Gargoyles sent by the Dark Lord, Dai is agreed to train with Avan. He was seen watching Avan training both Dai and Popp until they were attacked by the Dark Lord Hadlar until Dai awakening his powers and defeated him.
The next morning, Dai and Popp are setting off to their adventure to defeat Dark King Vearn while Brass and the other monsters bids farewell on their journey. However, Zaboera later kidnapped Brass and brainwashed him to make him fight against Dai to help Crocodine win against him, but luckily Popp managed to step in to risked himself into getting beaten up to a pulp and save Brass from the influence of the dark magic by casting a magical golden barrier on him, allowing Dai to defeat Crocodine. After Crocodine's defeat, he became tearful when Dai and his group were hailed as heroes.
When Dai and his group went on their journey to Papnica Kingdom, Brass return home to Dermline Island and tell Dai not to worry about him. When Dai and Popp returns to the Dermline Island, they went to the cave and find the Crown of Championships before they left, leaving Brass angrily told them to clean up after themselves.
After Dai wished for everyone's hearts to be united, Brass and the other monsters on Dermline Island heard everyone's voices around.
Following Dai's sacrifice, Brass and the others were searching for him for weeks, but couldn't find him anywhere. While mourning for him as they stared at the Sword of Dai, they were surprised to realized that Dai may come back since he's still alive. The epilogue shows his happiness of Crocodine, Chiu and Hym living at the Dermline Island with him.
