Stop hand

Broadside's bio presented him as literally getting the worst possible out of his alternate modes. He transforms into an Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, but gets seasick. He transforms into an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet but doesn't like heights. Despite these handicaps, he is a brave warrior in battle. In the Marvel Comics, he's a member of the Wreckers.

In the cartoon, Broadside was voiced by the late Bill Martin.

History[]

Cartoon[]

Broadside is supposedly 300 meters long as an aircraft carrier, however the real USS Nimitz is 332.9 meters long. Oddly the F/A-18 is only 17.1 meters long. The F/A-18 is actually one of the jets found on the Nimitz class carrier.

Broadside was depicted as being very large in all modes, standing at least twice as tall as Ultra Magnus, and being able to combat giant Decepticon combiners alone. Broadside first appeared in episode 67 of the animated Transformers series, "The Five Faces of Darkness, Part 2"

Broadside had a troubled history in the animated continuity. A large Autobot spaceship that looked exactly like Broadside's jet mode appeared in "Five Faces of Darkness", but was destroyed in the episode. In the following episode, "The Killing Jar", a Quintesson scientist disguised his spaceship as Broadside and beckoned the Decepticon Cyclonus to come inside. Inexplicably, Cyclonus complied.

Broadside's first confirmed appearance was in "Thief In the Night", where he appeared in Nimitz-class aircraft carrier mode. He fell on Devastator in "Carnage in C-Minor", appearing in robot mode (albeit an old prototype design). In "Grimlock's New Brain" and "The Burden Hardest to Bear", Broadside finally appeared in his correct robot mode.

He last appeared in episode 92, "The Burden Hardest to Bear".

Marvel's the Transformers (UK)[]

In Target 2006, Broadside and his fellow Triple Changers Sandstorm and Springer were recruited into Operation: Volcano, to replace Ultra Magnus in the battle scenario. Emirate Xaaron had them pose as Decepticons and fight the Wrecker's leader, Impactor. Impactor was impressed with their prowess, and the Triple Changers began training in Debris. When Volcano went down, events on Earth led the targeted Decepticons to not show, aside from Macabre, who killed Impactor, and Springer succeeded him as leader.

In Distant Thunder, Broadside joined the other Wreckers in hunting down Optimus Prime, mistakenly believing he was a disguised Decepticon spy. They were stopped from executing him by Ultra Magnus and Emirate Xaaron. Broadside joined Optimus on several missions until both he and Ultra Magnus travelled to Earth.

Broadside and the other Autobots later uncovered a scheme by the insane scientist Flame, who planned to activate a fusion engine at the heart of Cybertron which would likely destroy the planet. Although captured by Flame, the group managed to escape and defeat Flame's zombie army. Broadside went with Springer to get something to breach Flame's control room, which turned out to be the Decepticon Trypticon. The engines were eventually shut down in an act of self-sacrifice by a resurrected Impactor.

Having learned Galvatron was on Earth, the Wreckers headed there to confront him. However, they arrived in the middle of a human city and found themselves fighting not only Galvatron but also Cyclonus and Scourge. Broadside personally challenged Galvatron with mixed results. In the end, the Wreckers broke off the fight to save Springer from Cyclonus and Scourge, allowing Galvatron to escape.

After the debacle, Broadside was sent back to Earth with Sandstorm and Inferno to act as a permanent monitoring unit. Although ordered to stay away from humans, Broadside agreed with his comrades that they should stop a Funacian firebug attacking a human settlement. They later tried to join a town's Christmas celebrations only to panic them and cause damage, before being attacked by the Autobot Powermasters after they mistook them for Decepticons. It took a recently rebuilt Optimus Prime to restore order.

Having finally located Galvatron, Broadside welcomed Springer as he joined them on Earth with reinforcements: Not only the other Wreckers but the Decepticon Mayhem Squad. Their battle with Galvatron, who was backed up by Megatron, Scourge and Ravage, ended up as a massacre, with most of their unit killed and the others only saved by the arrival of Rodimus Prime with reinforcements.

The incident left Broadside, Springer and Inferno as the only survivors, stranded on Earth after Megatron stole their ship. They ended up joining up with surviving Mayhems Carnivac and Catilla, and together they encountered Skids, who had been returned from limbo after Galvatron's death and was accompanied by a group of limbo demons. The disparate group defeated them together and declared themselves the Survivors. However, the alliance was opposed by Snarler, who assembled a new Decepticon Mayhem Squad to hunt down his old comrades. This coincided with Carnivac tiring of Springer's command and leaving the Survivors. Broadside and the others eventually came to his rescue, but not before Catilla had been killed.

In the Earthforce storyline, after Carnivac went after the Mayhems on his own, Broadside helped convince Springer to contact the Autobot Earthforce led by Grimlock, offering to join them in return for help rescuing Carnivac. A large group of Autobots accompanied the Survivors in confronting and defeating remaining Mayhems Bludgeon, Stranglehold and Octopunch. Broadside last appeared in Divide and Conquer, ferrying Skids, Inferno and Carnivac to stop Starscream hijacking a tanker.

The post-movie version of Broadside appeared in Peace, where he was one of the witnesses to the destruction of the last Decepticon outpost on Cybertron. Rodimus Prime declared the war over, but deep cover Decepticon agent Triton managed to start a fight between the Wreckers and the Technobots over who should be the new leader, which escalated into an Autobot Civil War.
