Keep in mind that many people have died for their beliefs; it's actually quite common. The real courage is in living and suffering for what you believe in.
~ Brom on beliefs and courage.

Brom Holcombsson was a veteran Dragon Rider and a character in the Inheritance series.

In the film, he was portrayed by Jeremy Irons, who also portrays Alfred Pennyworth in the DC Extended Universe.

Brom was also the father of Eragon. Brom was, like many other Riders, opposed to King Galbatorix's regime in Algaeasia and eventually founded the Varden, a resistance against Galbatorix and his Empire. Brom also trackd down and slew the thirteen Forsworn, servants of Galbatorix, and eventually killed their leader, Morzan.

After Brom's dragon, Saphira l, was slew, Brom fled to Carvahall and lived as a storyteller until Eragon got his dragon, so they left Carvahall and made a journey to the Varden in order to get revenge after Garrow was murdered by the Ra'zac. When they made it to Dras-leona, they stayed until they heard that Galbatorix was coming to the city to scold Dras-leona's king. When Eragon was being chased by the Ra'zac, Brom got poisened, then later died from the poison, as in the film he was killed by Durza's spear, shielding Eragon. Eragon buried him and put a ward on him so he wouldn't decay. After defeating Galbatorix, Eragon returned to his father's grave and would think of resurrecting him, but decided not to due to the harm it could do.

Similarities to other Heroes

Brom is very similar to Headmaster Albus Dumbledore and Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, as all were betrayed by their close friends, Morzan, Gellert Grindelwald, and Anakin Skywalker. In addition, both were wise mentors for the main protagonists, Eragon, Harry Potter, and Luke Skywalker, who all witnessed their mentor's death by a villain (Ra'zac and Durza, Darth Vader, and Severus Snape). He is also similar to Gandalf due to Saruman's betrayal, but the character was revived after his battle against the Balrog, and only accompanied the main protagonist Frodo Baggins in the first film.
