Bronwen Light is the tritagonist of the 2024 interactive novel Five Nights at Freddy's: The Week Before, the tie-in prequel novel to the first Five Nights at Freddy's.
She is a Junior Newspaper Reporter heavily invested in the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza case, however her editor wouldn't let her post any of her findings, likely from a lack of evidence. In her desperation to find out the truth, Bronwen broke into the restaurant on Ralph's last week in his job, where she finds an awful truth about the animatronics and their plans regarding Ralph.
Biography[]
Background[]
Bronwen claims that she was always fascinated by the Freddy's case, leading her to try to get a summer job in Freddy Fazbear's Pizza a year prior to the events of the novel.
Ralph, her interviewer, gave her a glowing recommendation and even thought she was too good for the job at some points - commending her dependence and capability. However, in spite of that, Management decided against hiring her, much to Ralph's surprise. It's likely that they did so because they knew she would try to dig too deep into their secrets.
After being rejected, Bronwen instead became a junior newspaper reporter and decided to investigate the mysteries of Freddy's on her own. However, no matter how much she found, her editor wouldn't let her print any of it for unspecified reasons.
Crediting Ralph for rejecting her position in Freddy's and saving her life, Bronwen looks into him and his life, finding out that he has a daughter, Coppelia. She would also find out that Ralph would soon be working his last shift.
Bronwen's inside sources in Freddy's seem to have provided her with every number inside the restaurant, including the party rooms and backstage's. They have also warned her about the animatronic's odd behavior when they heard about Ralph's retirement, which picks her interest enough to cause her to break into the building to find out more about the truth.
The Week Before[]
Throughout Ralph's last week on his job, clear indicators of Bronwen entering and breaking into the pizzeria are scattered throughout the place. Most notably, a ticket with her blood and the numbers "2-0-1-4" written on pen inside Pirate's Cove and a mysterious engagement ring inside a birthday cupcake.
Bronwen herself doesn't make a direct appearance until Night 3, where she breaks into Freddy Fazbear's Pizza through a window and injures herself. Ralph, not recognizing her, believes that he's dealing with a vandal or a thief and cautions around the pizzeria as he boards up the window and cleans up the blood.
Later on, Ralph hides himself under a party table to catch the intruder by surprise, only to find who appears to be Freddy Fazbear waiting for him instead. He tightens his grip on his mop in preparation to defend himself, however he soon notices that "Freddy" was staggering around - more than usual - and around places where his AI wouldn't normally detect as approved to go, even bumping against the tables and chairs of the party room.
Ralph soon noticed a second row of teeth and another pair of eyes when the suit's mouth opened. He realized that the intruder must be using a spare suit from the backstage to pass unnoticed. Preparing himself to apprehend the intruder, Ralph noticed that there was fresh blood on the floor, from the door to the Backstage to where the intruder was standing. Ralph looks up to them again, seeing that the Freddy suit now was covered in red and that even more blood was dripping from its eyes. "Freddy" walks up to him, and cryptically claims that "it's me."
Ralph wakes up under the table, realizing that it had all been a nightmare. It's implied that this nightmare was caused by either Bronwen's spirit or by Golden Freddy.
Upon returning home, Coppelia tells Ralph that a woman she didn't recognize had called him just minutes after he went to work. Coppelia adds that the woman wanted to catch him just before he went to work, but didn't say why. Ralph figures that if it was really that important, the woman would just call again soon.
In Night 5, if Ralph found Bronwen's ticket he's able to input the code 2-0-1-4 into the answering machine. Once done, he listens to a pre-recorded message of Bronwen introducing herself and explaining her findings: The Animatronics, angered at Ralph for leaving them, were testing out the boundaries of their bodies. They were starting to plan how to leave the building to, presumably, cause havoc outside the pizzeria. They started to redirect the building's power to their charging plates, overcharging their batteries to last longer and longer.
Bronwen pleads Ralph to return for a sixth night and get under the main stage to fix their charging plates for everyone's sake, especially her daughter Coppelia's.
Ralph, having accepted Bronwen's request to return for one last shift, can find her dead body stuffed inside a Freddy Fazbear suit in the backstage. He notices that she is holding a mobile phone, and takes it.
He manages to squeeze into the main stage's crawlspace and turn on the building's reserve power supply, which takes the power from the animatronic's charging plates instead of giving it. However, Ralph was now in a deadly staring contest with Golden Freddy, and he had looked away just for one second to make sure the animatronics were standing.
Golden Freddy teleported in front of Ralph and held his head, starting to invade his head and replacing his every thought with an onslaught of "it's me's." Just as he was about to die from the psychic attack, Ralph hears a soothing and calming voice through the onslaught, who reassures him in his final moments about Coppelia's fate. Ralph, knowing that he had saved his daughter, passes away with a smile.
The player can now play the Bonus/Canon route using Bronwen's mobile phone as a bonus item, which Ralph will use to leave messages to his successor in the night shift.
Trivia[]
- It's yet unknown where Ralph gets the mobile phone in the canon route.
- A plausible explanation is that, in the canon timeline, Ralph simply owns a mobile phone. At no point in the route does Ralph question the presence of the mobile phone in his inventory, nor is the phone referred to as "Bronwen's phone," but as just the mobile phone.
- In Bronwen's recorded message to Ralph, she slips and accidentally calls Bonnie by his soul's name, Jeremy. This is similar to how Susie's name popped into Ralph's head as he was interacting with Chica.
- In Night 5, Bronwen's pre-recorded message somehow knows that Ralph is listening on his fifth and final night on the work and pleads him to return for his sixth. Because of this, it's likely that this wasn't originally part of the message but Bronwen's spirit was directly talking to Ralph through the phone.
