Buttercup Utonium is one of the three titular main protagonists (alongside her sisters Blossom and Bubbles) of the PowerPuff Girls franchise.
She is the middle-sister of the three Powerpuff Girls. Her primary ingredient is spice and her predominate color is green. Among the girls, Buttercup is the best and most reliable fighter, and is the toughest and most intimidating one.
Buttercup was voiced by Elizabeth Daily, who also voices Tommy Pickles, Rudy Tabootie, and Shorty. In German, she is voiced by Ilona Brokowski, who dubs Barbie, but in Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion and the XL edition, Tara Strong voices her.
Personality[]
Buttercup's name is not based on personality, but rather through realistic "buttercup" flowers: it symbolizes emblems of joy, youth, and the simple pleasures of life, which is what Buttercup is characterized as. She was just named that for it starting with a "B," just like her sisters, Blossom and Bubbles, which is, in fact, the cause of her sour personality. Buttercup's overall nature is being a vain and stubborn tsundere, who is known to be a very violent and egotistic girl, and occasionally shows to be narcissistic as well.
She is also shown to be the kind of person who almost typically disregards advice and warnings from the surroundings, even though they did told her at first that there will be consequences or risk-taking problems that will potentially occur. In Moral Decay, she became so greedy for dollar coins when she beaten up the criminals and steal their teeth for coins. This was until she was punished by Blossom and Bubbles for her greedy obsession.
She does, however, seem doubtful of her interest in boys. When the girls resorted to kissing the Rowdyruff Boys to defeat them, Buttercup expressed immense disgust immediately afterward. Buttercup did, however, once held an ephemeral crush on Ace of The Gangreen Gang, and was not introverted to pursue a relationship with him, though she did so behind her sisters' backs. She eventually discovered that Ace was merely using her as a tool in an attempt to control Townsville and almost kill Blossom and Bubbles, after which she immediately beat Ace and the other gang members into submission, thus ending her crush on Ace for good.
In Down 'n Dirty, Buttercup (unlike Blossom and Bubbles) hates taking a bath, believing it is for sissies. Her arrogant beliefs has caused her family, friends and the entire citizens of Townsville force her to take a bath due to her negative hygiene habits. She still believes she can fight monsters without taking a bath until a monster forcibly surrendered and leave her because she stinks, causing Buttercup to give up and reluctantly take a bath because she desires to fight monsters again.
Her primary ingredient is spice, which reflects her being very tough. However, in Cover Up, she shows her softer and more lighthearted interior.
Appearance[]
Buttercup is a five/six year-old girl, the tomboyish middle-sister, with black hair and green eyes. She wears a green sleeveless dress, which has a black stripe running through the middle, white socks and black Mary Jane-proportioned shoes.
Story[]
Referred to in the ending theme as "The Toughest Fighter," she is the trio's toughest and most wrathful member, being immediate to anger. Occasionally, this and her aggression get the better of her simultaneously, making her a little reckless and stubborn (but she overcame it in Makes Zen To Me). She also showed a greedy disposition in Moral Decay, which she knocked out teeth for the sole purpose of obtaining boatloads of money.
She has shown these sides, and a more softer and kindhearted interior in several episodes. For example, in the episode, Cover Up, she had a soft green blanket that she was obsessed with that she would hug that gave her the confidence to be a better fighter, and she is quite protective over her sisters.
In the episode, Nuthin Special, her special "ability" is revealed to be the ability to curl her tongue (Blossom and Bubbles cannot do this, nor can anyone else in Townsville). She possesses a violent and egotistic streak not displayed by her sisters.
During the birth of the girls in The Powerpuff Girls Movie, she was initially shown to look extremely optimistic and cheerful with wide eyes and an enthusiastic smile up to the point where, last of the three girls, Professor Utonium said he would name her Buttercup because, like both of her sisters' names, it also begins with a B. Once she heard this, Buttercup immediately crossed her arms and pouted, "Hmph!" This potentially explains her tough nature.
It is also revealed in the film that Buttercup inspired the other girls to make excessive usage of their powers to fight crime and the forces of evil after she knocks down Rocko Socko who caused her to lose her temper with one punch. Ironically, she initially apologized profusely for her actions, thinking she would get in trouble with everyone. Her greatest dislike of all time is admitting defeat, making Buttercup heavily failure-intolerant, and because of this, the Powerpuff Girls were able to achieve victory against the Rowdyruff Boys in The Boys are Back in Town.
In "Down N Dirty", Buttercup got herself dirty when she is fightning monsters. She refused to take a bath. However, she gets dirtier and dirtier when she stinks. She thinks she still can fight monster without getting herself clean until the monster quickly surrendered and going back home because Buttercup stinks. Buttercup's vow has take a complete blow that no monster would ever fight her while she stinks. She submitted and take a bath just so she can fight monster again.
Her special ingredient is spice and her signature color is light green. She also stated in an interview for the Powerpuff Girls Movie that through the rough fights, she never worries about injuries at all.

- Buttercup is the toughest girl of the Powerpuff Girls, but has a softer and lighthearted interior. This classifies her as a tsundere.
- Buttercup had a love issue with Butch when they met and in Townville Clips. It is unknown if she still have feelings for Butch.
- Her creator, Craig McCracken, was almost going to call her Bud until his friend, Miles Thompson, thought of the name, Buttercup.
- In Beauty, Brains and Brawn, she is described to be the Brawn.
- Buttercup is one of the nine main characters of the IDW comic Super Secret Crisis War.
- Buttercup is the first Powerpuff Girl who has three syllables in her name instead of two like her sisters' names.
- The movie shows her father only chose the name for alliteration; since he already named Blossom and Bubbles. Though like an actual buttercup, her surface persona hides her true feelings.
- Buttercup saying the phrase, "Get your hands off him, you darn dirty ape!" is a reference to Planet of the Apes. It was not originally written like that and Tom Kenny or Tom Kane suggested it would be like a Planet of the Apes reference just before recording began. Buttercup was originally going to say "Let him go!"
- There would have been a scene in the movie where Buttercup tells Mitch he rocks, explaining the reason Mitch later has a shirt titled Mitch Rocks.
- EG Daily originally screamed all of her lines in the asteroid sequence of the movie, but were re-recorded to make the lines lighter.
