Byakuya Togami is one of the six main characters of the Danganronpa series. His title is Ultimate Affluent Progeny. In Japanese, his title is instead Super High School Level Heir.
In the game, he is voiced by Akira Ishida in Japanese in both the game and the anime. While in the English he's voiced by by Jason Wishnov in the game and by Jessie James Grelle in the anime, the latter of whom also voiced Armin Arlert in Attack on Titan, Shido Itsuka in Date A Live, Fumikage Tokoyami in My Hero Academia, and Yuji Sakai in Shakugan no Shana.
History[]
Byakuya is the heir to the financial giant that is the Togami family.
As a tradition, the head of the family did not have a single, dedicated wife, but instead had many, many children with “a number of the highest quality women” all across the world. At some point, all of the potential successors were made to compete against one another, with the victor being named heir of the Togami Corporation.
In Byakuya's generation there were fifteen candidates of various genders. The candidates all fought for the position and in the end, Byakuya, the youngest, came out on top. It was the first time in the family's history that the youngest had ever “taken the crown”. The losing siblings were exiled from the family, but Byakuya harshly described them as being “killed” because, according to him, “[to be in] exile is pretty much the same as death”.
According to the rumors, Byakuya had already held several management positions at a company and had managed to acquire a considerable amount of fortune on his own. Furthermore, all of the schools he enrolled into were exclusive ones, his former high school being Green Hills High School.
The closest person to him was his butler, named Aloysius Pennyworth, who referred to him as "Young Master".
Byakuya attended Hope's Peak Academy's 78th class as the Ultimate Affluent Progeny, making him exceptional even among the Ultimates.
Appearance[]
Togami has a tall, slim figure and usually dons a black suit. He wears a white shirt underneath and a green necktie. He has short blond hair and he wears white framed glasses. Togami is usually seen with his arms crossed, a personal quirk in line with his arrogance.
Personality[]
Togami is an arrogant man who saw himself superior to others, due to being the heir of an extremely successful family business. He is often cold, blunt and taciturn, but has a deviously manipulative tendency. Togami had often expressed irritation from Fukawa/Jill's obsessive behaviour toward him, though he often used it to his benefit by ordering them (technically, her) around. His dismissive attitude alienated and angered others to the point where Aoi Asahina slapped him and Mondo Owada threatened to kill him more than once.
Throughout the story he saw events of the series as mere games, which frequently antagonized the others, saying he would be the one to emerge unscathed. Despite his prudish demeanor, he was actually one of the group's most sensible students and had proven to be a competent investigator. He is, however, not afraid or unwilling to manipulate the scene of a murder to entertain himself more. He greatly revered his family, often speaking of the vast power of the Togami Group; when Enoshima revealed the state - or rather, cessation of existence - of the entire Togami Group, he did not take it well initially, although he would later recover from the shock to announce that he would rebuild the family from the ground up.
Because Byakuya sees the events as a game where there is only one victor, he is annoyed when the students attempt to prevent each other from killing and when they consider each other as friends, believing it to be a waste of time and just delaying the inevitable. He also does not understand why the students attempt to protect each other during a death game . Because of these views, he frequently breaks the group's own rules, such as going out during nighttime and coming to the morning meeting late, if at all. Due to Byakuya seeing the Killing School Life as a mere game, he is fine with tampering with murder scenes that occur in order to "liven things up", such as with Chihiro's murder where he made it look as if Genocide Jill had murdered Chihiro instead of the actual murderer, complicating the entire trial.
Byakuya also appears to view money without much thought, even large sums of money such as 4 billion dollars. When Monokuma attempts to motivate people via 10 million dollars, Byakuya claims it is not even enough for him to consider it a deal. This may stems from Togami Corporation's massive funds and wealth, as the potential heirs most likely were allowed a large sum of money. Byakuya himself also had billions of dollars as his personal wealth already.
He is also quick to zero in on suspects without alibis, or those who seem to be most suspicious, as shown in the fifth school trial when Kyoko did not have credible alibis to back her absence and when he threatened Makoto Naegi by saying he would be his first target if he were to kill somebody. It had become obvious though, that having spent much time within a highly competitive environment, he was unable to account for the human factor, thereby committing errors in judgment when attempting to resolve the death of Sakura Ogami.
Byakuya is extremely reluctant to admit to any mistakes he might have committed. As a result, during the Chapter 4 Trial, when Byakuya realized Aoi had lied about her actions in the Chemistry Lab, he got confused and started to panic, questioning what was going on since he made an error. Again, despite his intelligence and perception, he missed a piece of evidence for the trial that Kyoko discovered. As Kyoko began to uncover more about the murder, Byakuya started to grow impatient and annoyed, to the point where he was yelling at Kyoko and Makoto and believed they were wasting time, shouting "How can you know what I don't know!?" to Kyoko.
