Heroine Overview

If I grant you power, could you go on? I propose a deal—in exchange for this power, you must agree to make my one wish come true. Accept this contract, and you accept its conditions. While living in the world of humans, you will live unlike any other: a different providence, a different time, a different life. The Power of the King will condemn you to a life of solitude. Are you prepared for this?
~ C.C to Lelouch vi Britannia.

C.C. (pronounced C2) is the tritagonist and lead heroine of the anime series Code Geass. She is an immortal woman (called witch by various characters) and the one who gives Lelouch vi Britannia his Geass. She subsequently becomes his ally. C.C. is not her real name; she involuntarily reveals her real name to Lelouch in her sleep, but it is muted so the viewers cannot hear it.

She is voiced by Yukana Nogami in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Kate Higgins in the English version of the anime, who also voiced Sakura Haruno in Naruto, Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury in Sailor Moon, and Retsu Unohana in Bleach.

Appearance[]

C.C. is a girl with long, almost waist-length light green hair and golden eyes. She is a rather slender and tall young woman, being an inch shorter than Kallen. C.C.'s outfits are both plentiful and varied. She is seen wearing a wide assortment of different clothes, often dependent on the situation or the time period.

During the show's present, in season 1, she mainly wears the white outfit that acted as the straight jacket during her transport; other notable outfits are the school swimsuit, a green and white Goth Lolita outfit, while around Lelouch's room she often merely wears a white crop top and white short shorts. She often wears Lelouch's own clothes, including his Zero costume whenever Lelouch required a decoy.

In season 2, she primarily wears a black outfit inspired by Zero's, though with exposed shoulders and instead of trousers, the outfit splits into four trails like coattails combined with a dress; she wears above knee-high white boots, with her thighs revealed. Another noteworthy costume is the bunny costume.

Abilities[]

C.C. doesn't do much actual fighting, but she's perfectly capable of it. While not on the same level as Kallen, she is quite an adept Knightmare Frame pilot, serving as Lelouch's copilot and once able to hold her own with limited support in a chaotic air battle against Suzaku, amongst others. She's also handy with guns and skilled in hand-to-hand combat. In Nightmare Of Nunnally, it's revealed that she fought in the Hundred Years War, and Joan of Arc was her rival back then.

C.C. has a Geass Code, which means she is immortal, unaging beyond the time she received the Code at 16, and able to recover from any and every injury, although the more severe the damage, the longer healing takes.

With the Code, she also has power of endowing someone with Geass, a superpower that can change the world; however, she cannot control how the Geass will manifest, as it depends entirely upon the individual's subconscious desire. The powers generally centre around the mind, enabling influence or control of another's will, mind-reading, memory manipulation, hallucination inducement, and even precognition. As a Code-carrier, C.C. is immune to influence from a Geass power.

Personality[]

C.C. is a mysterious, snarky girl who makes a contract with Lelouch and grants him the power of Geass. In truth, C.C. is an immortal witch who has lived for centuries, and has an apparent connection to Lelouch's fallen mother Marianne. She knows a lot more than she lets on, often muses on the nature of humanity due to her long lived nature, and remains at Lelouch's side as he plans to obliterate Britannia and change the world's order.

As child during her biological age of birth to 16 years, she had a beaten down and submissive personality, as indicated when she was temporarily amnesiac, losing memories post-Geass. She lived as a servant or slave during the Medieval era, one day she met a mysterious Nun, who was the first person to show her kindness, which the orphan girl appreciated; the Nun also had the power of Geass; C.C. was given power, which manifested from her deepest desire to be loved.

Initially enjoying the attention, the power made her feel unfulfilled, since it wasn't real love; her power grew that some hypnotised became too aggressive. Wanting the powers removed, the Nun agreed if C.C. took her Code; when the Code was bestowed, the Nun stabbed her in the heart, as a part of the ritual, but also metaphorically, revealing that she had never cared about the girl, merely using her to gain the release of death. With the spell broken, the villagers fell out of love with C.C. and believed her to be a witch, a title she carried herself out of remember of the cruelty she experienced at the hands, as they stabbed, disemboweled, and set her on fire.

After years of further persecution no matter where she went, she found herself adopting the goal of the Nun, which was to find someone to pass the curse to and be killed. However, was reluctant to curse someone as she had been, thus the rare times she gave Geass, she abandoned them to protect them. Her nihilism caused her to drift into the schemes of Emperor Charles, willingly going along with his schemes out of desperation for death, and the cruelty she had experienced made her indifferent to rest of the world. He betrayed and imprisoned her, until she was fatefully freed in the presence of Lelouch; she bestowed upon him the power of Geass.

Out of boredom or curiosity, she allied with Lelouch as he becomes Zero, being with him almost everywhere, sometimes to assist him, other times merely to tease him, since her long dead emotions felt a rise of amusement at his reactions. C.C. and Lelouch would trade snippy comments, building upon their connection with humour, rather than just schemes. While helping his plans with the Black Knights, when they were alone, she tended to be slothful, spending his school day lazing about his dorm room. She could be gluttonous, as she consumed pizzas throughout the day; this habit also reflects her aloof nature, as she orders delivery to Lelouch's dorm room, disregarding the potential that her secret presence could be discovered.

Without disturbing overall plans, she enjoys toying with some members of the Black Knights; other than Lelouch, the person she seems to enjoy teasing the most is Kallen. Without malice, she exploits the girl's emotional doubts in regards to Zero, just to enjoy her unintentionally funny reactions. C.C. builds a solid rapport with Kaguya as well, finding the young girl's exuberance a reminder of innocence and hope.

Lelouch's acceptance of her and refusal to judge her soften C.C.'s heart, which made her reconsider adherence to Charles' plan, albeit not revealing its existence to Lelouch until after he learns it personally. During dark moments of Lelouch's campaign, she would either make comment on the pointlessness of worrying about the dead, whereas as she warmed up to him, she made concentrated efforts to console him and support him to move forward.

For all her snark and apathy for the world around her, deep down she just wants to genuinely be loved by someone. By the time that Lelouch meets her, her experiences with her Geass and centuries of being hunted and tortured for her power have left her disillusioned that it could ever happen. Ultimately her time with Lelouch and the knowledge that he didn't hate her and cared before his death ended up being enough to revive her belief in the world and find hope in living. Despite grief over Lelouch's death, she no longer wished to die, as he had given her an appreciation for life and a sense of optimism for the future.

Exclusive to the compilation movie timeline: In Lelouch of the Re;surrection, she fostered and cared for Lelouch's healed but soulless body, displaying her sentimentality and attachment to him, even though the body was merely a docile husk, showing it was gentle, but lacking any memory or ability to communicate. C.C. risks entering C's World to retrieve Lelouch's soul, restoring him to life; they resume their banter and resonance they had before his death. After the final struggle, Lelouch has the power of immortality the same as her, and he offers to accompany her forever, with the implication of more intimate affection; C.C. is slightly flustered then extremely delighted (albeit, in her usual subtle manner) accepting his offer, thereby in this timeline she has a restored sense of love of life, optimism, and companionship of someone who she loves and loves her in return, thereby granting her original wish she expected from Geass.

Trivia[]

  • Throughout the series, the pizza that C.C. eats is from Pizza Hut, which is due to the company being a sponsor of the show in Japan. The mascot plushie she gets is called Cheese-kun.
  • At the end of the film Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection, Lelouch chooses to travel with C.C. and asks her if now he can take "L.L." as his new name. According to the production of the movie, that was Lelouch's own way of marriage proposal.[1][2]
