She's so fast Victor, it was incredible! She must be the best engine ever!
~ Emily telling Victor about Caitlin, Best Engine Ever, nineteen season
MainCaitlinCGI

Caitlin is a streamlined engine from the Mainland, who is designed for speed. She also has her own rake of coaches painted in a similar colour scheme to herself. She is painted magenta and a blue and white lining

Background Information[]

Caitlin loves to challenge the other engines to a race and has a tendency to get a little over-excited. She, along with Connor, regularly transport passengers from the Mainland to Ulfstead Castle.

Along with Connor, Thomas, Percy and James, she helped with the search of Stephen before Ulfstead Castle's opening. Caitlin once had to spend the night on Sodor and became too excited to listen to Sir Topham Hatt's advice. During her night on Sodor, she took the Mail Train and the Flying Kipper. Unfortunately, she did not take others into consideration and ended up waking lots of people up.

Soon, Thomas has completed his delivery to the quarry and is hurrying back to the shunting yard. Caitlin arrives back at the yard first and Charlie tells her a funny joke. Charlie is so busy laughing that he shunts Annie and Clarabel with Caitlin's coaches. Caitlin is coupled up to her coaches and is unaware that she also has Annie and Clarabel as she pulls away. Annie and Clarabel had been sleeping, so they do not know it is actually Caitlin who is pulling them along until they see Thomas puff into the yard. Thomas arrives just in time to see Caitlin pull away with his coaches. He tries to stop Caitlin, but she does not hear him.

Annie and Clarabel are not enjoying their journey with Caitlin at all. They are being pulled along faster than they have ever gone before. Eventually, Caitlin pulls into Wellsworth Station where she meets up with Connor. She challenges Connor to a race and, much to Annie and Clarabel's horror, he accepts the challenge. They pull away just as Thomas enters. Once again, Thomas calls out, but the streamlined engine does not hear him.

As Annie and Clarabel are racing towards Ulfstead Castle, they vow never to complain about Thomas again. Finally, Thomas makes it to the Ulfstead Castle hill, just as Caitlin is coming back down. Thomas calls out, but Caitlin thinks he is just saying hello and speeds on her way.

Thomas knows he needs to stop Caitlin before she gets to the Vicarstown Bridge to go to the Mainland. As Thomas arrives at the bridge, Caitlin has already crossed it. He feels very upset. Just then, Hiro arrives on his way back from the Mainland. He has Annie and Clarabel coupled to him. Thomas is delighted to see his two faithful coaches again.

Personality[]

Caitlin is a streamlined engine, designed for speed. Along with her friend Connor, Caitlin is an excitable and energetic tomboy, who likes to be busy and loves to race. Both Caitlin and Connor are friendly and eager to get other engines to join in the fun with them. Caitlin is particularly impatient and restless if she has nothing to do. She would rather be racing than sit in a station and be idle. Caitlin and Connor were introduced to the island to bring passengers from the Mainland. They zip on and off the island frequently using the Vicarstown Bridge.

Trivia[]

  • Caitlin has been partially modified to work on British railways with a screw-link coupling and buffers on the back of her tender. She retains a streamlined cow-catcher (also known as a skirt) on the front, so she is unable to shunt. She has also been scaled down from her basis, with the rear section of her cab and doors noticeably thinner than her basis, and as a result, her cab is too small for her crew to fit in comfortably.
  • Her crew has been seen climbing into her cab in Best Engine Ever, however they were not actually seen climbing in through her cab door, possibly due to her doors being too small.
  • In the twenty-first series, Caitlin gained a tail-lamp.
  • Caitlin had a major rendering error in certain scenes in King of the Railway and Series 17, where her connecting rods and cylinders would face the wrong way, making her eccentric rods and piston rods move incorrectly and leaving certain parts of her connecting gear disconnected from her body altogether. This error was corrected from Series 18 onwards.
  • In Best Engine Ever, the flap on Caitlin's skirt where her crew were inspecting her brakes was a compartment that housed a knuckle coupler on her basis to allow express trains to be double headed.
  • Despite being based on an American locomotive, Caitlin speaks with a faint Irish accent.
  • Caitlin shares her name with Hilary Fortnam's granddaughter. Fortnam was the youngest daughter of The Railway Series creator Wilbert Awdry.
