Caitlyn Kiramman, also known as the Sheriff of Piltover, is a heroic playable champion in the MOBA game League of Legends, and the deuteragonist in the 2021 Netflix animated spin-off prequel series Arcane.
Renowned as the finest peacekeeper in all of Piltover, Caitlyn is a sniper of deadly accuracy and a detective of an intellect unmatched by any who seek to break the law in City of Progress.
The 67th champion added to the game, Caitlyn was released on January 4th, 2011, and is most commonly played in the bot lane.
One of the reasons Piltover is known as the City of Progress is because it has an extraordinarily low crime rate. This hasn't always been the case; brigands and thieves of all sorts used to find the city-state an ideal mark for plunder, primarily due to the valuable resources it imports to fuel its techmaturgical research. Some even theorize that it would have fallen long ago to the chaos of organized crime if not for Caitlyn, the Sheriff of Piltover.
Born the daughter of a wealthy statesman and a pioneering hextech researcher, Caitlyn discovered her natural gift for investigation when, at age 14, her father was assaulted and robbed on his way home. She snuck out of her house that night with her father's rifle and tracked down the muggers from the crime scene. At first, her parents did their best to discourage her from such risky hobbies, but she was incorrigible. Wishing to protect her daughter in the only way she knew how, Caitlyn's mother began outfitting her with techmaturgical devices tailored to her sleuthing needs.
Caitlyn quickly gained notoriety, as she was single-handedly defeating crime in Piltover and had developed into a ravishing beauty as well. She never backed down from a case or a challenge, and she was one of the sharpest shots in the city-state. Her services were soon requested by Demacia to help track down a mysterious outlaw who had begun committing high-profile heists.
The bandit, who always left a card with an ornate 'C' at the scene of the crime, became Caitlyn's nemesis. To this day, Caitlyn still searches for this cat burglar, and the chase has led her all across Valoran. As she travels, she seeks to hone her skills and gain the influence necessary to track down the only quarry that has managed to evade her.
Caitlyn is first introduced as the best friend of Jayce Talis and the daughter of his patron family, helping him carry various items into his apartment. After the building is destroyed in an explosion, Caitlyn makes it out of the wreckage unharmed, but Jayce is subsequently arrested for testing with unauthorized equipment. Trying to speak up on his behalf, Caitlyn convinces her mother, Councilor Cassandra Kiramman, to take Jayce's side during the trial, but this idea fails when Jayce reveals that he was experimenting with magic, an act forbidden by the city of Piltover, and Jayce is expelled from the Academy.
Upset that her family has forsaken Jayce, Caitlyn tries to talk to him, but is stopped by her mother, who forbids her from associating with him anymore. However, when Jayce's experiments work and his theory is proven correct, he regains favor from the Kirammans and he and Caitlyn are allowed to be friends again.
After some time, Caitlyn, feeling stifled by a life in the upper classes, signs up to become an Enforcer, inspired by a meeting from her childhood with the late Sheriff Grayson. However, both her parents and the current Sheriff, Marcus, are opposed to this. Her parents because they believe the job is too dangerous, and Marcus because he is unable to control her. As a result, Caitlyn was often assigned menial jobs, such as guarding her parents' tent during a Progress Day festival.
Following an attack in a Piltovan airship, Caitlyn runs an unauthorized investigation and attempts to get information from one of Silco's henchmen, but is stopped by Marcus. That night, Caitlyn is caught in an explosion by Jinx, which killed several of her fellow Enforcers as the criminal got away with Jayce's newly-developed Hextech gemstone. Hoping to locate the culprit, Caitlyn pieced together the clues from her recovery bed and traveled to Stillwater Prison to find answers. These answers came in the form of Vi, a brawler from the undercity who recognized some of Jinx's graffiti. To use her as a guide, Caitlyn had Vi released on Jayce's orders (who was now a Councilor) and the two made their way into the undercity.
Upon arriving in Zaun, Vi found a disguise for Caitlyn and gave her a tour of the Lanes. Following the trail of information, Vi eventually came to blows with Sevika, Silco's top enforcer, but had to be saved by Caitlyn with a well-aimed shot. Realizing Vi needed medical attention, Caitlyn brought Vi to a house in the lower levels and traded her rifle for medicine. The two bonded during this time, and Caitlyn learned more about Vi's past and her sister, Powder.
When Silco eventually found them, the pair fled the scene, but Vi soon ran ahead of Caitlyn as she struggled to catch up. When she finally did catch up, she saw that Vi had reunited with Powder. However, Caitlyn recognized Powder from the attack at the square, and realized to her horror that Vi's sister was none other than Jinx. Paranoid that Vi had brought an Enforcer to arrest her, Jinx began to threaten them both, but was interrupted by an attack by the Firelights, who captured Caitlyn, Vi, and the gemstone.
Having been captured, Caitlyn started to argue with Vi, but became worried when they took Vi away for questioning. When Vi returned, she assured Caitlyn that they were among friends and introduced her to Ekko, the Firelight leader. Having come from vastly different backgrounds, Caitlyn and Ekko were initially suspicious of each other, but found common ground when she explained the nature of the Hextech gemstone and her desire for peace. The trio then made a plan to deliver the gemstone to Piltover's Council and reveal Silco as the mastermind behind the attacks.
However, this plan would go sideways when they were stopped on the bridge by Marcus, who was secretly collaborating with Silco. Marcus shot Ekko and prepared to kill Caitlyn, but was then killed by Jinx, who blew up everyone on the bridge with explosive mechanical firelights. Caitlyn injured her leg in the blast, and was about to be finished off by Jinx when Ekko saved her, having survived using a bulletproof metal plate. Ekko then engaged Jinx in battle while Vi took Caitlyn to safety.
Having lost the gemstone, Caitlyn decided she and Vi should present their case to the Council anyway and returned home to speak with her mother. While she did not regard Vi fondly, Caitlyn's mother agreed to let them speak during a meeting that night, and together they revealed the truth about Silco's plans. However, Vi and the Council had major disagreements on how to deal with the crime lord. Storming out, Vi left Caitlyn after saying that Piltover and the undercity would always be too different to understand each other, leaving Caitlyn heartbroken.
Later on, Caitlyn was attacked in the shower by Jinx, who kidnapped and brought her to a tea party in a dilapitaded undercity warehouse. Silco and Vi were also there, and Jinx demanded that Vi kill Caitlyn so they could be sisters again. However, when Vi refused, Caitlyn managed to escape and became locked in a tense stand-off against Jinx, but this ended poorly for Caitlyn, who got knocked unconscious. When she came to, she woke up just in time to witness Jinx firing a rocket to destroy the Council, where both her mother and Jayce were present. The season ends with Caitlyn in distress, not knowing either of their fates.
Growing up in a noble family, Caitlyn hates her privileged status and upbringing, wishing she could do more to help the people of Piltover. She resents her parents' protective nature, and considers herself a "misfit" among the upper classes. Motivated to change the city for the better, she joined the Enforcers to protect its citizens, but was horrified at the level of corruption and brutality within its ranks. Since meeting Vi, she has grown more aware of the terrible conditions of the undercity and vows to help them all in any way she can.
After becoming the Sheriff of the Piltovan Wardens, Caitlyn is shown to be an experienced detective, able to hunt down even the craftiest of masterminds by following clues and staying hot on the trail. As a skilled sniper, Caitlyn also has great confidence in her abilities, and becomes angry if she believes someone is going easy on her because of her status. She also loves tea and cupcakes.
