~ Caleb to Reid about using magic

Caleb Danvers is the lead protagonist of the 2006 supernatural thriller The Covenant. He is one of the Sons of Ipswich, teenage boys who are descendants of four colonial witch families and thus, have supernatural abilities. He is the eldest of the group and will 'ascend' when he turns 18, a process which unlocks his full magical potential.

Personality[]

As the oldest, Caleb acts as the de-facto leader of the Sons of Ipswich and is by far the most responsible not only with his friends but with his magic. He has seen first hand the effects of overusing his powers, as his father lays crippled and dying because of it, and so he tries to reign in Tyler and Reid when they get out of control. Despite his very responsible attitude, Caleb likes to have fun and even has a romantic side which he showed to Sarah.

History[]

Caleb is first seen at the Bonfire Party, where he reluctantly jumps from the edge of a cliff with the rest of his friends and uses his powers to land safely. It's here he first meets Sarah and is immediately attracted to her. He also has his first interaction with new student Chase Collins. The police shortly arrive and the Sons flee the party, getting involved in a police chase through the woods, until they use their powers to evade the scene by making Tyler's truck fly.

Caleb senses a powerful use of magic and is woken up in the middle of the night in a terror, it is then that a a student is found dead on campus and Caleb immediately suspects Reid. He denies it and the two get involved in a brawl behind the bar. Caleb starts to get close to Sarah and the two run errands together, growing closer in their blossoming relationship. The Sons also grow closer to Chase, who has fully befriended both Sarah and Kate.

At a school swim meet, Caleb races against Chase and sees his eyes flash and turn to black (a sign of magic being used). He and Pogue break into the admissions office to find out more, it is then that they discover Chase is the missing fifth member of the Sons of Ipswich, from a bloodline long presumed gone. Caleb tells the rest of his friends and Pogue, angry that Chase has cast a spell on his girlfriend Kate, leaves to confront him. Chase overpowers Pogue and sends him to the hospital.

Caleb goes to see Sarah, but Chase gets there first. He threatens her life unless Caleb wilfully gives up his ascended powers to him the minute he turns 18. Caleb eventually confesses everything to Sarah and breaks the covenant of silence. He enlists the help of his friends Tyler and Reid to protect her at the school dance while Caleb goes to confront Chase at the old barn.

Chase is one step ahead and has kidnapped Sarah and leaves her magically paralysed at the barn. Caleb battles with Chase using magic and it looks hopeful as he finally ascends, but is ultimately overpowered due to Chase's combined use of his own ascended power and that of his fathers. Unbeknown to him, Caleb's mother begs her husband (Caleb's father), to give up his own powers and donate them to their son in order to save his life. William Danvers III agrees and Caleb is able to win the battle by blasting Chase into a destroyed barn that is now up in flames.

He rescues Sarah and uses his new enhanced magic to fix his cars broken windscreen, while the fire department can't see any sign of Chase's body. The two hold hands and drive away.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

The Power: As a warlock, Caleb wields The Power a mysterious source of supernatural abilities and thanks to that he possesses vast magical abilities which are activated just by a thought. He does not need spells or incantations, he just needs to think about the action and it will happen, the sign of this is his eyes flashing with burning fire rings and then turning black. He has demonstrated the following abilities:

  • Telekinesis: the power to move things with his mind. He can use it to make himself, or objects, hover, propel someone into the air and even, with assistance, cause a whole car to fly. He can also harness powerful telekinetic force and use it as blasts and energy which can seriously harm and individual and also destroy the area it comes in contact with.
  • Pyrokinesis: Caleb can ignite fire, such as when he caused a ring of fire around the Book of Damnation.
  • Power Sensory: he can sense when there is powerful magic being used.
  • Enhanced Strength: By summoning supernatural forces within his body, he can increase his strength beyond human capabilities.
