~ Caliburn choosing Sonic. |
Caliburn the Sword is a talking weapon used by Sonic the Hedgehog as well as the deuteragonist of Sonic and the Black Knight.
He was voiced by Hiroaki Hirata in the Japanese version, and by Casey Robertson in the English version, the latter who also voices Reala in the English dub version of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams-present.
Overview[]
Caliburn is a sentient talking weapon and legendary sacred sword that becomes Sonic's partner to stop King Arthur. Though their relationship came off to a rocky start, Caliburn provided Sonic with the guidance and knowledge needed to be a true knight. He tends to aid Sonic on his journey to become the hero of his kingdom.
Appearance[]
Caliburn is a long sword with a double-edged silvery blade and a lighter edge.
Personality[]
Caliburn acts like a sophisticated gentleman and has polite manners, which initially clashes with Sonic's easy-going attitude. He is also shown to slightly have the personality of a strict teacher, usually calling Sonic out on his recklessness and can also be gentle on compliments. Following the code of knighthood, Caliburn believes in chivalry. As such, he is noble, dutiful and honorable. However, he tends to stick so closely to the rules of chivalry that he forgets about general acts of kindness. For example, he considered mercifulness in a duel between knights to be an insult to a knight's honor, and he prioritized his and Sonic's own goals over the lives of several townspeople when trying to complete some tasks set by Nimue.
Abilities[]
Caliburn can cut through even rock and dragon scale, though with some effort. His cutting power improves once he turns into Excalibur, where he can slice through Dark Queen Merlina's magical armor created with the power of her immortality-granting scabbard.
History[]
At the end of the game's second mission in Misty Lake, Sonic pulls Caliburn out of the cliff where he's been buried for years. To his surprise, Sonic discovers the sword has a mind of its own and can talk. Caliburn doesn't approve of the hedgehog initially, and the two trade insults ("knave" and "oversized letter opener" being their respective favourites) throughout the game. Nevertheless, Sonic gradually improves in the swordsmanship stakes as he and Caliburn take down the Knights of the Underworld and the Knights of the Round Table.
During Sonic's futile battle against the eventually antagonistic Merlina the Wizard in Dark Hollow, Caliburn is broken in half by her vicious attacks. Sonic's determination in the face of defeat prompts the bisected sword's transformation into the legendary Excalibur, simultaneously turning Sonic into Excalibur-Sonic. They work together and defeat the final boss, the Dark Queen.
During the end sequence, Caliburn reveals that he is the only one authorized to determine who receives the crown of the Grand Kingdom after the demise of the illusory Black Knight King Arthur on Faraway Avalon. The Knights of the Round Table are shocked to realize that this means Sonic himself was the TRUE King Arthur the entire time.
