Biography[]
Past[]
Long ago Calypso was born to Atlas and became a sea Goddess. At some unknown point in her life, she met a sailor named Davy Jones who fell in love with her and she in turn fell in love with him. She decided to make him a ferryman of the dead who was tasked with helping souls who died at sea to the afterlife and could only step on land once every ten years, but would be granted immortally. After she was not there when Jones could finally come ashore after his latest ten-year tenure at sea, he cut out his own heart and placed it in the aptly-dubbed Dead Man's Chest. In revenge for her betrayal, he got the Brethren Court to imprison her in a human from. As a human she took the name Tia Dalma.
Dead Man's Chest[]
Sealed in her human form of Tia Dalma, Calypso became a voodoo priestess and fortune teller in a swampy marsh well upriver from any source of ocean salt water, and was well-respected by the locals who lived there. One day, she is visited by Captain Jack Sparrow and several of his crew from the Black Pearl, including Joshamee Gibbs, Pintel & Ragetti, and Will Turner. Jack asks for the whereabouts of the Dead Man's Chest, where Davy Jones keeps his heart. It is only when Jack attempts to leave after getting the information he wanted that Tia demands to see his hand, unbandaging it to reveal the feared Black Spot, mark of a pirate slated for death by Davy Jones and his dreaded Kraken. While Gibbs, Pintel & Ragetti perform a ritual to protect themselves upon seeing it, Tia retrieves a jar of dirt to give Jack to protect him due to Jones being unable to set foot on land except for one time every ten years, and his tenure before he could do so was still in effect, so the jar would keep Jack safe. Afterwards, she directed them to the location of where they could find Jones' ship, the Flying Dutchman.
Later, Will, Gibbs, Pintel, Ragetti, and Elizabeth Swann, along with the other survivors from the Black Pearl, return to Tia's with heavy hearts after Jack went down with the Pearl to Davy Jones' Locker, with the locals also showing their sympathy and mourning for Jack as well. As Tia offers them solace, drinks, and a place to stay, when one of them mentions wanting to get Jack back, Tia reveals that there is a way to get him back from the Locker, but wanted to make sure they were all in agreement to do it. Once Will, Elizabeth, and the crew agree, Tia reveals that she was also housing Hector Barbossa in her house, who asks what became of his ship in the Pearl.
At World's End[]
Joining Barbossa, Will, Elizabeth, Pintel, Ragetti, Gibbs, and the rest of the crew of the Black Pearl, Tia infiltrates Singapore as they attempt to get sea charts from the Pirate Lord Sao Feng to guide them to Davy Jones' Locker, especially with warning him of the threat of the East India Trading Company under Lord Cutler Beckett eradicating piracy around the world with Jones and the Dutchman under his command as long as he controlled Jones' heart and the Dead Man's Chest. Once they have the charts, a ship named the Hai Peng, and several of Sao Feng's men as the crew to pilot it under their lieutenant Tai Huang, they set sail for the Locker. They soon arrive at World's End and enter the Locker. Though the Hai Peng is wrecked, they are soon reunited with Jack and the Pearl.
While Jack and Barbossa vie for command of the Pearl due to both having been captain of it at some point, soon, as they sail the Locker, Tia spots the souls of the deceased floating past, and provides some backstory on Jones. When Elizabeth's father, Governor Weatherby Swann, rows past, Tia knows he is at peace as he heads off to join Mrs. Swann and to give Elizabeth's love to her, despite Elizabeth's pleas to rescue him until being told it is impossible. After Jack figures out how to leave the Locker via turning the ship upside down, so when the green flash of sunset occurs, the ship returns to the Land of the Living at sunrise there, they stop at an island to resupply, finding the Kraken, dead, there, before being confronted by Sao Feng and Beckett when they arrive with the Empress and HMS Endeavour. However, Sao Feng is convinced that Elizabeth is Calypso and requests to take her with him back to the Empress with his crewmen under Tai Huang. Angered by Will selling the Pearl out to Beckett, Elizabeth accepts, tells Will off for his deception, and leaves with the Empress as they attack the Endeavour to allow the Pearl to escape as well.
As for the real Calypso in Tia, she is later confronted by Barbossa, but she warns him of the price that he'll pay for double-crossing her in return for reviving him when she grabs his hand and causes it to decay before letting go and letting it recover. Barbossa has her confined to the brig as they arrive at Shipwreck Cove to meet with the Brethren Court. While she's in lockup, Jones arrives to confront her, but hides the truth that he betrayed her to the Brethren Court as it is clear they still love each other, with Tia's powers momentarily returning Jones to his human form before they part ways, with Tia promising to give the Brethren Court hell for what they did to her.
After Elizabeth is elected Pirate King and declares the Brethren Court will go to war against the EITC, after a parley where Jack is traded for Will, an attempt is made to ask for Calypso's help by undoing her bounding. Right before Tia returns to her true form as Calypso, Will reveals Jones' treason against her with telling the Brethren Court how to bound her as they originally did. Thus, when asked if she would help them against the EITC, Calpyso says something unintelligible, before suddenly disintegrating into hundreds of crabs that could disguise themselves as stones and disappears into the water. The Brethren Court fear their last hope in Calypso is lost, but Elizabeth rallies the Court to raise their Jolly Rogers and prepare for a last stand.
However, Calypso does come to the Brethren Court's aid as she summons a massive maelstrom to try and pull the Pearl and the Dutchman into. When the storm first manifests, Jones thinks Calypso is coming to his aid, but the rain against his face quickly makes it clear she knows the truth and has turned against him, he becomes enraged. Later, when Jack has Will, in his final breaths, stab Jones' heart, Jones can only gasp Calypso's name as his last words before tumbling off the Dutchman into the whirlpool, becoming one with her again.
After the Dutchman sinks while the Pearl escapes, Calypso dispels her maelstrom, and leaves the HMS Endeavour to face its end at the hands of the Pearl and a revived Dutchman with Will as the new captain, resulting in the Royal Navy armada under the EITC flag to retreat in disarray after losing the Endeavour and Beckett, who was killed when the Endeavour exploded after its powder magazines ignited. With Beckett dead, the Brethren Court was victorious, and piracy was safe.
