She doesn't have as much imagination as her daughter, but her wisdom helps her stop the witch fanatic Jacob Hopkins and save an innocent demon.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Camila, although it is shown that she and her daughter live together. When Luz was young, her husband died of an unknown condition, leaving Camila to raise Luz alone. While Camila loves her daughter and understands her "strangeness", Luz's antics have caused her trouble at school many times. In "A Lying Witch and a Warden," Camila attends a meeting with Luz in the principal's office after Luz gets into trouble over a report about snakes and fireworks in her book. Camila, although she supports her daughter, decides to send Luz to a summer camp to punish her for her behavior. Luz doesn't really want to go, but she's trying to do it for her mom. Then, while Luz is waiting at the bus stop, Camila says goodbye to Luz before leaving for work. Unbeknownst to Camila, Luz does not go to the camp and goes to the magic kingdom, where she decides to stay for the summer. That night, Camila sends Luz a text message asking if she is enjoying the camp. Luz responds vaguely, indicating that she likes this place so far. She reappears at the end of "Enchanted Grom Fright", where he shows how he writes to Luz and sends her photos at his favorite lunch shop and tells her that he loves her. Luz, because she was afraid to write and lie to her mother, continues to reply with emoticons to avoid her. Later that night, Camila writes again, and this time she gets a full response from Luz. Camila ends the conversation by saying that she enjoyed receiving her emails, which Luz assumed she meant text messages. Then Camila falls asleep, where nearby, on her bedside table there are several letters about the camp written by someone pretending to be Luz. At the end of "Keeping Up A-fear-ances", Camila cries over a documentary about animals, and the "other" Luz offers her a tissue. In "Yesterday's Lies", Luz manages to contact his mother through a defective portal and tell her about his adventures on the Boiling Isles and asks her to help save her "impostor", a basilisk demon named Vee, trapped by Jacob Hopkins. Despite the amazing truth his daughter tells him, he sets out to protect Vee from his abductor by threatening to report him to the police for placing illegal traps and cameras on private property and eventually beating him with a flip flop. Camila returns home with Vee and gives her Hexes Hold'em cards. On the verge of tears, Camila discovers that Luz has decided to stay on the Isles, in a fantasy world, believing that this is how she leaves her and made her daughter promise to return to her side when she returns to the Human Realm. Dejected, Luz promises him and then disappears, causing Camila to start crying.
One rainy night, a little over a month after she learned about the Demon Realm, Camila is making soup when she hears a knock on the door and is surprised to see Luz along with four strange people she has not seen before, when Luz greets her with tears. Camila is kind to Luz's friends and listens to their story. She puts two beds in Luz's room for Willow and Amity to sleep in and puts Gus and Hunter in the basement. After registering her guests, she tells Luz that she is not angry with her for leaving and feels relieved that she is home. Over the next few months, Camila adjusts to the extra people in her house and accepts when Luz comes out bisexual and is dating Amity. She does everything possible to make her guests comfortable and even thinks about the ways of cooking dishes that they are familiar with.
In October, she has gotten used to five extra children to care for and is shocked when Gus and Hunter find her Cosmic Frontier things. On Halloween, she drives Luz, Amity, Gus, Willow, and Hunter to the Halloween festival before returning to help Vee hand out candy. After Vee falls asleep, she finds Luz's videos diaries and is shocked when, in the last one, Luz says she is going to stay in Gravesfield once she finds a way back to the Demon Realm.
Camila drives Vee to the festival and finds Amity, Willow, and Gus what tell her they lost track of Luz and Hunter. They find the two in a partially flooded graveyard and she sees Hunter get possessed by Belos. After Belos crushes Flapjack, she and the others watch as Hunter, who partially regained control, throws the Titan's Blood into the water and he jumps in after it. Camila pulls Hunter out and watches as Belos leaves Hunter and opens a portal to the Demon Realm. She is shocked upon realizing what her daughter was up against and tells Vee to call an ambulance. She watches an injured Flapjack sacrifice himself to save Hunter and, when he awakens, helps him up. When Luz announces she is staying in the Human Realm, Camila interrupts saying she will join them. Vee decides to stay behind and take her place as Camila and Luz follow the others into the Demon Realm.
