Camilo Madrigal is a supporting protagonist of Disney's 60th animated feature film Encanto.
He is the middle son of Félix and Pepa Madrigal, the younger brother of Dolores and the older brother of Antonio. Camilo is also the nephew of Julieta, Agustín and Bruno Madrigal, the grandson of Alma and the late Pedro and the cousin of Isabela, Luisa and Mirabel. He has the power of shapeshifting, being able to turn into any human being he knows.
He was voiced by Rhenzy Feliz, who also played Alex Wilder in Runaways.
Appearance[]
Camilo is a 15-year-old Colombian teenager with a slim build and light, golden complexion. He has curly brown hair, green eyes along with a dark tint to his eyelids, and freckles on his nose and cheeks. Like his late grandfather, he wears a long-sleeved white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the collar unbuttoned, a dark yellow ruana, brown pants, and black sandals with white prints. Symbolizing his ability to change shape, Camilo's clothing has a chameleon motif, with chameleons on his shirt collar, ruana, and sandals.
Personality[]
Camilo is an easy-going, cheeky teen, and seems to be one of the members of the family with less pressure imposed on him by Abuela, due to his gift being not very useful to the community. He gets along with many of the townspeople, displaying a friendly demeanor when welcoming them to Antonio's gift ceremony. While he is not boastful or vain, Camilo enjoys being the center of attention and has a great sense of humor, always trying to make people laugh by using his shape-shifting abilities. He is noted to enjoy eating and is seen trying to sneak seconds by pretending to be Dolores so he can repeat (which his father scolds him for).
It is said that Camilo "not know who he is yet", and uses his powers to try different personas. He likes to play pranks or make fun of his relatives, mainly his father and Isabela. Although he is mischievous and a bit cheeky, Camilo's pranks are harmless and never malicious, taking it easy when caught or scolded. While not addressed or shown in the film, Camilo does suffer from pressure and has insecurities, though he hides it under his cheerful demeanor. Although he enjoys his gift, it makes him questions his sense of self, and constantly shapeshifting for others does tire him out.
Despite his funny and mischievous character, Camilo has a very tender, sweet and responsible side. Camilo is good with children and babies, and he often uses his gift to play with them and take care of them. He loves his younger brother and is affectionate towards him. He tries to help him relax during his ceremony by posing as his father, and later, when the family loses their powers, Camilo pushed passed his own pain of losing his gift to worry over how Antonio was feeling. Although he likes to make fun of his father, he never plays pranks on his mother and is very sweet with her. When dealing with his emotional mother, he treats her in a soothing manner when trying to get her to calm down and puts up with being accidentally jolted by her without complaining. As the house collapses, he (along with Isabela) runs to try to save the miracle candle because their whole lives they’ve been told it’s the most important object in the Encanto, demonstrating his protective drive to help his family, but they lose their gifts in the process.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Shapeshifting⁚ Camilo has the gift of shapeshifting, and is able to transform in any human being he knows. The transformation is very fast and with no in-between during it. He can also transform only certain parts of his body, or manipulate the appearance of the person his transformed in (the appearance of him disguising as the person, not the actual person), making it shorter, bigger, or even mix two different appearances in one.
- Other skills⁚ Camilo also possesses good agility and speed, shown when he used his gift to turn into children and adults to slide, jump, and run through the falling pieces of the ruined house. While his voice can also change to match the person he shapeshifts into, Camilo can naturally do vocal impressions well after much practice.
Weaknesses[]
- Emotional Alteration: His emotional state sometimes causes him to transform involuntarily and wildly if he is stressed, shocked, or in pain. When she is startled by Bruno's vision, she quickly transforms into Mirabel and Bruno and soon his mouth twitches and his eyes end up bulging and looking away from each other. When he is scared or nervous, his head becomes that of a baby on his adolescent body and his arms become small and skinny.
- Limitations: His power has certain limits, such as he can only shapeshift into people and cannot shapeshift into animals or objects. He also cannot mimic traits beyond a physical level; for example, if he were to shift into the magical members of his family, he would not possess their gifts (if he changed into his cousin Luisa, he would be stronger than the average human but not as strong as her). As mentioned above, he would need practice to mimic others' voices.
Trivia[]
- Camilo's personality originally was planned to be the archetype of "angry teen", which contrasts a lot with the easy-going Camilo of the final product. He was also planned to antagonize Mirabel, with them being in odds with each other, but this role was given to her oldest sister, Isabela.
- Camilo's name is based on the word "chameleon", which is an animal that can change colors.
- Despite not being explored in the movie itself, Camilo is said by the producers to have identity issues, not knowing who he is yet, and by thus, using his power to try different personas.
- Camilo's name was originally Carlos.
- His original name, Carlos, also has a theme associated with Camilo's personality. A person with the name Carlos is often considered to be very creative, sociable and charismatic, who also makes others smile wherever he goes and has a close relationship with his family.
- Camilo and Mirabel are both the same age, fifteen-years-old, though Camilo is a few months older than Mirabel. Their circumstances have some possible parallels.
- Given how his gift has few uses to the community beyond babysitting and thus having less responsibilities from Alma, Camilo's interactions with her are presumably similar to Mirabel's to a lesser extent.
- It is even implied that Bruno's departure also affected his relationship with his grandmother too, through how she would see much of him in Camilo (as they both have similar clothing and bear the most resemblance to her late husband)
- His teasing of Isabela may stem from sharing the same view of her as Mirabel does for being the golden, perfect child, whilst Isabela likely envies how he, like Mirabel, has fewer responsibilities than her (and can use his gift more freely).
- He tries to encourage Antonio when he’s anxious about his ceremony.
- Given how his gift has few uses to the community beyond babysitting and thus having less responsibilities from Alma, Camilo's interactions with her are presumably similar to Mirabel's to a lesser extent.
- He is the only one of his siblings to not know/discover Bruno was really hiding in the Casita's walls using their gift; Dolores heard him regularly in all those years while Antonio, once he got his gift, was approached by the rats.
- Including his cousins, he is also the least informed about his uncle. Luisa, Dolores, and Isabela were old enough to at least know he is a good man, still calling him their uncle, showing him sympathy, and saying something positive about him. With the rats' intervention, Mirabel and Antonio, who respectively knew as much as and even less than Camilo, are able to meet and befriend their uncle and see his benevolent nature.
- Because of this, it makes sense that Camilo's reaction when Bruno returns is much more confused than the rest of the family, who are just happy to have Bruno back. Since he's the only Madrigal kid to have been left entirely out of the loop about his uncle throughout the film and is the only one in the family who doesn't really know what Bruno is really like, he has almost no idea what's happening other than "Tío Bruno is back."
- There may be two interpretations for why Camilo is shown at every meal helping himself to larger plates of food than most members of the family. The first is that because he is in puberty, he is achieving a growth spurt. While the second is because his gift may tire him physically, he may end up needing a lot of energy.
