Craig Cuttlefish, formerly known as Cap'n Cuttlefish, is the overarching protagonist of the Splatoon franchise, serving as the deuteragonist of Splatoon and Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion, one of the two unseen overarching protagonists of Splatoon 2 (alongside Agent 3), and the overarching protagonist of Splatoon 3.
He is the grandfather of the Squid Sisters and elderly Inkling war veteran who fought against his archenemy, DJ Octavio, during the Great Turf War as a member of the Squidbeak Splatoon. Years later, he would revive the Splatoon when he recruited his granddaughter Callie as Agent 1 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, who in turn recruited her cousin Marie as Agent 2. In the first game, he recruits Agent 3 to recover the Great Zapfish, which has been stolen by the Octarians. As of Splatoon 3, he has retired from being the captain of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, becoming their senior advisor and naming Agent 3 as his successor for the role of the Captain.
Appearance[]
Cap'n Cuttlefish has brown eyes, the Cap of Legend, denim shorts and wears a robe that has medals, as he was the leader of the Squidbeak Splatoon during the Great Turf Wars. He also has holes in his brown shoes that expose his toes. Cuttlefish has faded orange tentacles which he ties in a ponytail.
In the Octo Expansion, Cap'n Cuttlefish dons a white beret with a black and white headband. He wears black glasses, a green Zink tracksuit and pants as well as his medals. He also wears a pair of headphones with orange wiring, black sneakers and white socks.
In Splatoon 3, Cap'n Cuttlefish has now retired and wears an orangey-red Hawaiian shirt with coral and seagrass motifs. He has given up the Cap of Legend to Agent 3, exposing his bald head. He still wears his denim shorts and brown shoes however, as well as now pinning the medals on his shirt. After Mr. Grizz dehydrates him, Cuttlefish is permanently stuck in his swim form, resembling a sun-dried squid with bulging eyes and a beard which he retains from his regular form.
Personality[]
At a first glance, Cap’n Cuttlefish is a somewhat paranoid and conservative old man, likely stemming from his age and experiences in the Great Turf War. Seemingly endlessly suspicious of the Octarians, he’s always on the lookout for the resurgence of his arch-nemesis, DJ Octavio and as such has recruited two young Inklings to his cause. Cuttlefish’s paranoia extends even to innocent Octarians like Agent 8 as he ordered Agent 3 to attack them in sight, believing them to be hostile. However, Cuttlefish isn’t very effective as he tends to be somewhat senile, letting Octavio escape time and time again as he gets distracted eating “crabby cakes”, which are his favorite food (or biscuits in the European version).
Despite this gruff exterior, Cuttlefish is at heart a kind and well-meaning person, always doing his best to help his recruits succeed and being a caring grandfather to his granddaughters. Cuttlefish also genuinely desires peace between the Octarians and Inklings despite his animosity, with it being implied he tries his best to help civilian Octarians whenever he can. Furthermore, despite only forming a temporary truce, Cuttlefish grows fond of Agent 8 over the course of the story, apologizing for the scuffle earlier and even assisting them in the battle against Tartar. Likewise, Cuttlefish displays no hostility to Marina despite her role as a former Octarian weapons engineer, even displaying happiness at her appreciation of the Calamari Inkantation. Cuttlefish is also willing to put aside old grudges rather easily as he teams up with DJ Octavio against Mr. Grizz in order to stop him from wiping out all sentient sea life. Furthermore, it seems that the two have become friends once more, bonding over their shared inability to shapeshift thanks to injuries sustained.
History[]
Past[]
Long before the first game's events, Cap'n Cuttlefish was good friends with the Octarian leader DJ Octavio, though rising sea levels would force the two leaders into war over the remaining turf. Cuttlefish served as the leader of the Squidbeak Splatoon, where he helped the Inklings defend themselves from the Octarians. In the end, thanks to a mishap with the Great Octoweapons, the Inklings won the Great Turf War and the Octarians resorted to hiding underground. Despite this Cap'n Cuttlefish still desired peace between the two races and would remain near Octarian settlements helping friendly Octarians while keeping watch for the return of DJ Octavio.
Splatoon[]
Years later, the Octarians steal the Great Zapfish in order to use it for their power supply, and as revenge. Cap'n Cuttlefish later recruits a random Inkling to bring it back, dubbing them as "Agent 3". Much later, Cap'n Cuttlefish is captured by the Octarians' leader, DJ Octavio. With Agents 1 and 2, Agent 3 went to face off DJ Octavio to rescue both the Great Zapfish and Cap'n Cuttlefish.
Splatoon 2[]
Two years after the first Splatoon, initially, he was only mentioned in a Sunken Scroll. Later, he made his full appearance as an NPC in the Octo Expansion DLC, where he assists Agent 8, along with Pearl and Marina, to get back onto the surface.
Splatoon 3[]
In Splatoon 3, he has retired as head of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, handing command to Agent 3, the Inkling who helped him rescue the Great Zapfish in the first Splatoon. He now serves a senior advisor role for the troop, but continues to keep his eyes open for any potential threats to society, especially DJ Octavio and his Octarian forces after they kidnapped the Great Zapfish twice before. He meets with the protagonist of the third game while investigating the disappearance of the Great Zapfish at Splatsville and enrolls them into the Splatoon as New Agent 3 to rescue it.
However, after the New Agent 3 rescues several Zapfish in the Crater outside Splatsville and fights DJ Octavio when he arrives in his Octobot King L3.Gs mech to confront them and Cuttlefish, accusing them of kidnapping his Octarian forces, once Cuttlefish confronts Octavio, and the Octarian leader confesses that he did not kidnap the Great Zapfish this time, before it can be pondered further, the ground erupts with Fuzzy Ooze, pulling Octavio, his mech, Cuttlefish, and New Agent 3 with their Smallfry buddy into the land under the Crater. None of them are aware they had been watched falling down into the abyss by Deep Cut.
Cuttlefish is captured by the true culprit, Mr. Grizz, CEO of Grizzco Industries, and essentially mummified with being dried out in his squid form as Grizz needed one last ingredient for perfecting his Fuzzy Ooze, and Cuttlefish possessed it. By the time that New Agent 3, Cuttlefish's granddaughters in the Squid Sisters, and Captain Agent 3, reach the Alterna launch pad where Grizz was located, they are too late, finding Cuttlefish apparently lifeless before Grizz departs on his rocket to launch his endgame. As Captain Agent 3 holds Cuttlefish, a single tear from them is able to land on Cuttlefish and resuscitate him, but he remains stuck in his dried-out squid form. Nevertheless, the Squid Sisters are thankful that their grandfather is okay, and once New Agent 3 and DJ Octavio defeat Grizz and save the Earth, Cuttlefish joins the Squid Sisters and Captain Agent 3 back at their camp for the rest of the game. He also helps Callie and Marie run a merch store during the Grand Festival, having rekindled his friendship with DJ Octavio who runs the store with him, signing autographs for his own fans as well.
