Captain Brineybeard is a minor character in The Cuphead Show!, being the deuteragonist of the episode, "A High Seas Adventure!".
He's voiced by Jason Vande Brake.
Biography[]
Some time ago, Captain Brineybeard met a being known as Cala Maria. Upon which, he fell deeply in love with her. After the two of them seperated, Brineybeard swore to reunite with her.
Sometime later, Cuphead and Mugman board his ship and accidentally set sail. With this, Brineybeard has them tag along on his search for Cala Maria. Eventually, they arrive in a ship graveyard that was caused by her before she appears before them. Brineybeard presents a gift to her as he begins to propose only for her to turn him to stone. Then they get stuck on her island. Cuphead feels ready to leave, but Mugman feels like they owe Brineybeard, so he insist they bring him to Cala Maria to fulfill his goal. But while carrying him, Mugman slipped and accidentally broke Brineybeard's feet off and they were swept away, forcing Mugman to replace them with peglegs.
Upon doing so, Cala Maria expresses intent to eat them. However, Mugman presents Brineybeard's gift which turns out to be various things that Cala Maria really likes. This causes Brineybeard to be set free, taking Cala Maria by surprise. While surprised that he now has peg legs, he isn't upset and instead thanks Mugman for them. There, Brineybeard manages to remind her of their first date and asks her to be his girlfriend. Unfortunately, Cala Maria reveals she intended to eat him at that date but didn't due to being full from the dinner he treated her to. She also lets them know that she intends to eat the three of them now, but gives them a ten second head start, much to the trio's terror.
From there, Cuphead, Mugman, and Brineybeard run back to the ship only to find it stuck. However, Brineybeard blows a kiss to Cala Maria, so she blows one back. The blow proves powerful enough to free the ship and help them escape. Brineybeard thanks Mugman for his help and grants him the title of a pirate before Cuphead gets blown off of the ship, which he jokingly points out as him getting his "High Seas Adventure".
Trivia[]
- Brineybeard is so far the only boss from the game to be presented in a heroic tone in the cartoon. Every other boss that has appeared has either been a villain (Ribby and Croaks, The Root Pack, Baroness Von Bon Bon, Werner Wermen, and Cala Maria) or a simple cameo (Grim Matchstick, Hilda Berg, and Sally Stageplay).
- The show reveals how he got his two peg-legs when his original ones were accidentally broken off by Mugman while he was a statue.
- Like in the video games Brineybeard is by far the only human seen in the Cuphead universe.
