“ | In my book, experience outranks everything. | „ |
~ Rex's most famous quote. |
“ | I used to believe that being a good soldier meant doing everything they told you. That's how they engineered us. But we're not droids. We're not programmed. You have to learn to make your own decisions. | „ |
~ Rex. |
CT-7567 (nicknamed "Rex") is a major character in the Star Wars franchise. He was a Clone Captain who was in command of the 501st Clone Battalion of the Grand Army of the Republic. He served alongside Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and his padawan Ahsoka Tano throughout the Clone Wars.
At some point after the war, Rex was retired from service like all other clones and resided in an old AT-TE with fellow retirees Wolffe and Gregor, roaming the plains of Seelos. Eventually, he fought with Ahsoka again against the oppressive reign of the Galactic Empire.
Like all the other clones, he is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who also voices Perry the Platypus in Phineas and Ferb, Appa and Momo in Avatar the Last Airbender, Naga in The Legend of Korra, Lion in Steven Universe, Wallabee Beetles In Codename: Kids Next Door, Lalo In The Casagrandes, and Klaus Heisler In American Dad!. and some of Ben Tennyson's aliens in Ben 10 franchise. In Ahsoka, he is voiced by Temuera Morrison.
Official Bio from Starwars.com[]
“ | Rex once served the Republic on the frontlines during the Clone Wars, taking orders from Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano as first a captain and later a commander. He viewed military service as an honor, and his loyalty to the Republic and his Jedi Generals was absolute. But when Order 66 was executed, it was Ahsoka who helped to free Rex from the programming of his inhibitor chip. At the dawn of the Empire, Rex has escaped with his life but is considered killed-in-action in the eyes of the new regime. That allows him to operate in the shadows and help any clone brothers who remain separate from the Imperial ranks. | „ |
~ Rex's bio |
Personality[]
“ | Sir, if I may address your accusation. I followed your orders, even in the face of a plan that was, in my opinion, severely flawed. A plan that cost us men. Not clones, men! As sure as it is my duty to remain loyal to your command, I also have another duty: To protect those men. | „ |
~ Captain Rex to Krell on Umbara |
Rex was a very strong-willed clone trooper and was shown to be very free-thinking and independent compared to other clones, to the point some thought he was defective. Rex could go so far as to even speaking out of turn to other higher authorities, such as Jedi, about his opinions. Despite this, Rex is still willing to follow his orders as a soldier. He was loyal to his superior officers, but had a strong moral compass, creating an internal conflict at times. This was most notable with Jedi General Pong Krell, whom Rex butted heads with several times due to Krell's reckless and callous tactics which put Rex and his men at risk. Rex also had a very good friendship with Commander Cody, most likely because he was Skywalker's Captain and Cody was Kenobi's Commander.
Like most clones, Rex saw every single clone as his brother. He affectionately referred to clone rookies as 'shinies.' While he was a military leader and as a result was willing to make tough calls, as well as a soldier who valued following orders, he also cared deeply for the wellbeing of his troops and valued their safety as much as he did following orders. He was devastated whenever clones he was especially close to died, most notably Fives. When Order 66 came down, Rex was horrified when he killed a few of his brothers. Throughout the rest of the event, he used stun.
He is a gruff, aggressive and fearless captain among the clone troopers. Aside from his strength, he is an excellent tactician and capable of cunning maneuvers around his enemies. Despite Rex's serious demeanor, he has a good sense of humor, as well as a strong sense of loyalty, honor, and good morals. He also cares about his fellow soldiers and clones, considering them his brothers.
Physical appearence[]
Rex is distinguished by close-shaved blond hair (where most other clones have dark hair) and stylized hawk eyes adorning his helmets; like all members of the 501st, his armor bears blue markings. Later in the series, Rex's armor bears tally marks, representing kills, and Filoni felt it communicated that Rex "is becoming something of a little legend" because he is "a long term survivor of the Clone Wars". He also bears a scar on his chin in homage to actor Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo in the original trilogy.
Rex's later helmet design, first appearing in season four, was composed of elements from both the older Episode II-style and the newer Episode III-style designs. The T-shaped visor of his new helmet used the old visor design as a base and retained the old proportions, requiring some elements to be lowered to fit. Filoni developed an in-universe backstory for the design and felt that Rex "trying to wear the same armor" by welding together a hybrid version was a good character trait that added to his uniqueness. Filoni also characterized this specialized helmet and "hodgepodge of old gear and new gear" as indicative of Rex's distrust in the quality of the new armor and Rex's belief that with "classic stuff, the craftsmanship is a little better". Rex continues to wear his helmet and parts of his clone trooper armor in his Rebels appearances; in this older age he had grown a thick white beard, and was completely bald, although unclear if from shaving or natural balding - regardless, the lack of hair revealed the scar above his right temple on his head from which his inhibitor chip was extracted.
History[]
The Clone Wars[]
CT-757, nicknamed and later known as "Rex", was born and raised on the planet Kamino. A clone of Jango Fett, he grew at twice the rate of normal humans and was trained since birth to be a soldier. He was Captain of the Torrent Company within the 501st Legion, which was placed under the command of Anakin Skywalker after he achieved the rank of Jedi Knight. At some point, Rex and other clone leaders, including Cody, Bly, Gree, Bacara and Neyo, underwent training overseen by ARC trooper Alpha-17 to help them become more independent and effective as leaders and soldiers. As part of the 501st Legion, Rex participated in many extremely important (and brutal) battles. Along the way he trained and motivated several rookies who later became the most skilled soldiers in the ranks. Unfortunately, not all of these clones, like Fives and Jesse, were able to survive. Despite being only a captain, his skill, courage and intelligence made him Skywalker's right-hand man, making him the de facto clone commander of the 501st Legion. Near the end of the war, he was promoted to Commander and given control of the 332nd Company.
Rex played an important part in battles such as Christophsis, Teth, Gwori, Mon Gazza, Quen, Maridun, Bothawui, Rishi Moon, Ryloth, Kamino, Orto Plutonia, Naboo, Ryloth, Saleucami, Devaron, Genonosis, Lola Sayu, Malastare, Felucia, Mon Calamari, Umbara, Kiros, Onderon, Kadavo, Corusant, Scipio, Anaxes and Mandalore.
As all of the clones were bred to be obedient to the Republic, and when Chancellor Palpatine commanded Order 66 (directive to execute Jedi), Rex desperately tried to fight it off. He was unable to resist his inhibitor chip, and he, with his men, attempted to kill his good friend Ahsoka Tano. However, Tano managed to remove his chip and the two escaped Order 66 and faked their deaths.
Afterwards, he encountered Clone Force 99 and helped them remove their inhibitor chips. Rex would later work with Riyo Chuchi, and go on to help clones that were going against Imperial orders, such as Gregor and Howzer, and form a clone resistance.
Star Wars: Rebels and Ahsoka[]
After some time, Rex found Wolffe, and they, along with Gregor, lived on a modified AT-TE on Seelos for an unknown amount of time.
Eventually, the three clones were found by the Spectres, who were part of the rebellion against the Empire, led by Ahsoka Tano, which included Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Sabine Wren, Garazeb Orrelios, and Hera Syndulla. Rex, now chronologically 54 years old, decided to join the rebellion and the Spectre cell in their struggle against the Empire after a brief skirmish on Seelos, having been convinced to rejoin the fight. However, Wolffe and Gregor stayed in retirement on Seelos after the AT-TE was destroyed by the Imperials. They refurbished and took an AT-AT as their new home.
Ahsoka and Rex had a reunion at long last. After 15 years of not seeing her, the two embraced and said they were glad they were both still alive. Kanan initially did not trust Rex as he had watched his master get gunned down by clones, but after Seelos, their relationship began to heal, though their relationship was strained still. However, after a mission in which Rex and Kanan were to disguise as stormtroopers to save the Rebels' leaders, Rex was captured by the Imperials. Kanan had gone back to save him, showing that Kanan cared about Rex. He would then salute Rex as a sign of newly gained respect for the clone, who returned the sentiment. After the season 2 finale for Rebels, Rex makes it out of the Sith temple alive with the rest of the Spectres, while Ahsoka is left behind with Vader. He would go on to serve the Spectres in missions against other foes during the next two seasons of the series, including going against Grand Admiral Thrawn and liberating Lothal from Imperial control.
It is currently unknown if Rex knows Vader's true identity of being his former Jedi General Anakin Skywalker.
Throughout Rebels, Rex has been shown to hate stormtroopers because he sees them as being inferior to the clone troopers due to the stormtroopers being enlisted volunteers and clumsy, unlike the clone troopers.
Later on, Rex fought in the early days of the Galactic Civil War against the Empire, eventually being promoted to the rank of commander. He survived the Battle of Endor, which resulted in the destruction of the Empire and redemption of Rex's general, Anakin Skywalker.

Development[]
Initial development for The Clone Wars film chose Alpha-17, featured in the Star Wars: Republic comic, to be the principal clone trooper character. However, because Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and R2-D2 (Artoo) were also principal characters, Star Wars creator George Lucas felt Alpha's name created too much alliteration between the main cast, and a new character, Captain Rex, was created instead. The name "Rex" was chosen by Lucas. Previously, the name Captain Rex was used for the error-prone rookie droid pilot RX-24 of Star Tours, who replaced an earlier concept of an unpredictable and risk-taking Clone Wars veteran.
Voice actor Dee Bradley Baker voices all the clone trooper characters in The Clone Wars, including Rex. To differentiate the characters, Baker considered the personality traits of every clone, choosing one or two adjectives for each, and recorded each character separately. To aid with the vocal performance, Baker and supervising director Dave Filoni developed a "clone triangle" that arranged the characters by personality. Rex, characterized as the central personality type to which the other clones aspired, was placed in the center, and the other clones, who represented an excess of certain traits relative to Rex, were placed around the edges of the triangle.
Filoni wished most for the series to address the fates of Rex and Ahsoka because they do not appear in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, which was released before The Clone Wars but is set after the series' timeline. In April 2011, he hinted that the two characters' stories were possibly connected and remarked: "A lot of people say they want to know more about [Ahsoka], and along with that goes Rex." He also voiced the production team's conscious effort to write story arcs for Rex: "I think one of the other things is we have such a great development of Rex that we really want to keep telling Rex's story and things centered around Rex."
Reception[]
Captain Rex became a favorite among fans. Filoni noted that while older fans were excited to see Grand Moff Tarkin and Chewbacca appear in the series, younger fans appeared to prefer characters like Rex. Baker was surprised Rex became well-liked because the clone troopers were not established as distinct characters in the films.
Rex was ranked 36 in IGN's Top 100 Star Wars characters, where he was described as having a "silly name" but "bad ass". His ability to evolve and adapt as a character and as a soldier was noted, especially his change from scorn to sympathy toward a clone trooper deserter. Eric Goldman felt that the Rebels reunion between Rex and Ahsoka was a poignant moment and the emotional highlight of "Relics of the Old Republic". He also noted that Rex's reintroduction and Ahsoka's complete trust in him raised more questions about Rex in the time between The Clone Wars and Rebels.
Powers and Abilities[]
Abilities[]
- Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: A fully trained Advanced Recon Commando, Rex is extremely skilled in combat, both with weapons and without. Despite Rex's old age he still is an extremely skilled hand-to-hand combatant.
- Master Marksman: Despite Rex's old age, as a former ARC trooper, he is extremely skilled in utilizing blaster pistols and blaster rifles.
- High-Level Intellect/Master Tactician/Leader: Rex is highly intelligent. Rex is an exceptional officer, highly regarded for his competency even by the Empire. Despite the Empire's prejudices against clones, his and Cody's battle strategies were still used by the Empire to train their own officers, showing how highly regarded Rex's ability as a commander was.
- High Tolerance for Pain/Indomitable Will: As a former clone commander, Rex has been trained to resist interrogation as a prisoner of war. Initially, he was vulnerable to Force Mind trick (mind control) powers. Although, throughout the Clone Wars, Rex's willpower is further amplified to the point where he is completely resistant to all forms of mind control powers. Rex also was able to resist the inhibitor chip that was implanted in his brain long enough to tell Ahsoka of it.

Trivia[]
- Rex means "king" in Latin.
- Rex, like all clones, is portrayed by Dee Bradley Baker.
- Rex is unique in that unlike most clone leaders, he is a captain rather than a commander, serving as captain of the Torrent Company, which is part of the 501st Legion. However, due to his leadership, combat skills and relationship with General Skywalker, he effectively served as the unofficial Commander of the 501st.
- For a time fans speculated that Rex was the old commando briefly seen at the shield generator bunker in Return of the Jedi. This was due to the similar appearance of Rex and the old man. Rebels producer Dave Filoni fueled the speculation by stating that it was possible the old man was Rex but later decided that the old man who appeared on film was a separate character named Nik Sant.
- However, creators later proved that Rex took part in the battle.
- A live-action incarnation of Rex would later make a cameo in the fifth episode of Star Wars Ahsoka
- In "Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures: Han Solo - From Smuggler to General", Rex replaced Nik Sant in the short.
- Rex's counterpart in the 2003 Clone Wars show would be Captain Fordo.
- According to the DVD commentary of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" the movie, Rex was originally going to be Alpha-17 from the Legends comic: Star Wars Republic, but George rejected this as there was too much alliteration.
- Rex is currently the mascot of Lucasfilm Animation as his Phase II helmet is shown replacing the “o” in “Animation.”
