Cpt. Spears was one of the chosen drivers in the original 1995 Twisted Metal. He is a former captain of his soldier platoon whose was all murdered back in the war, consumed by guilt, Spears vow to won the contest to change the past.
He was the first driver of Roadkill, who was later succeeded by Marcus Kane and John Doe.

A tragic war veteran who enters the contest out of hopes that he can save his men and alter the dark path that awaits them, Spears managed to win his chance after several challenges.
In the end, Spears requested his chance to head back to the past. Calypso warn him of the consequences of doing so, but Spears shake off his advice and proceeded with his wish. Now once again in the past, Spears phoned his team as he tell them to wait for him, allowing them to survive their initial fate. However, Spears was then killed by an enemy whose was near him as he involunnterly sacrifice himself for his team fate.

- It is implied that he died in Twisted Metal (1995), as he has not reappeared in other games.
- The actor portraying Captain Spears in both his Lost ending and portrait art is presented as wearing both body armor and communication equipment. The point of these is unknown.
- Captain Spears is one of two characters who have a military rank but did not drive Warthog, the other being Mr. Grimm in Twisted Metal: Black.
- Captain Spears is one of three characters in Twisted Metal (1995) who has a negative end result, along with Carl Roberts and Charlie Kane.
- Captain Spears is also one of two characters who has driven Roadkill only once, the other being John Doe.
- His backstory and ending would later inspire Agent Stone's in Black, as the latter's ending in said game is similar to Spears'. Both are men working for the government who made a mistake in the past that resulted in the accidental deaths of others and enter the contest to win and undo the mistake that both men had made. In their endings, they travel back to the time that made their mistake, but before they do, Calypso asks both men if they really want their wish and asks if they know the consequences, they both accept. But unfortunately, both men die trying to fix their mistake by an enemy, except Spears wasn't able to save the people he wanted to help, whereas Stone succeeds, although it does happen in the lost ending.
