Carmilla Carmine is a major character in the adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel.
An influential and powerful Overlord in Pentagram City and the Pride Ring of Hell, Carmilla makes her living selling weapons to demons throughout Hell, including angelic firearms and blessed weaponry with angelic steel.
Commanding respect among her fellow Overlords of Hell, she's determined to minimize the casualties of the upcoming Extermination while also avoiding war with Heaven. She's also the mother of Odette and Clara and has a close and strong relationship with her fellow Overlord, Zestial.
She is voiced by Daphne Rubin-Vega.
Biography[]
Nothing is known about Carmilla's background, other than that she was presumably a human before dying and going to Hell for equally unknowable sins. She eventually rose up to be an Overlord of Pentagram City in the pride ring of hell as well as the producer and distributor of every kind of deadly weapon a demon could want, including modified angelic weaponry. At some point she had two daughters named Odette and Clara. During the last Extermination, she decapitated and killed an Exorcist Angel (a seemingly impossible feat that no other demon had accomplished) to protect her daughters, which ends up being the major catalyst behind Adam's decision to move up the deadline for the next Extermination to 6 months instead of a year as is custom.
She's briefly seen in the opening scene of the Pilot following the end of the most recent Extermination, hiding in her mansion with Zestial, Lucifer, and Zeezi. She opens the curtains in response to Charlie launching a firework into the sky to signal the end of the Extermination.
Making her official debut in "Scrambled Eggs", she hosts a meeting with the other overlords to come up with a strategy to minimize the kill count for the upcoming Extermination. The meeting takes a sudden turn when Velvette presents the overlords with the head of the deceased Exorcist in order to convince them to wage war against Heaven's forces and begins to mock and belittle Zestial advises at Velvette's reckless tactic. Angered by Velvette's disrespectful attitude towards her friend Zestial, Carmilla calls out and scolds the young overlord Velvette and the Vees as a whole for the arrogance and lack of foresight. Velvette then questions why someone who makes a living off of selling weapons is suddenly opposed to waging war, using her reaction to make her out as knowing more about the cause behind the dead angel than she wants to admit, leading to Carmilla ending the meeting early and leaving with Zestial and her daughters.
In private, Carmilla admits that she was the one who killed the Exorcist Angel in defense of her daughters but refuses to make this knowledge public out of fear that the resulting uprising would lead to Heaven wiping out demonkind altogether, including her loved ones. Unknown to either of them, Alastor had one of Sir Pentious's Egg Boiz, Frank eavesdrop on the conversation and learn the secret, which he tells the spy in question to keep between the two of them.
Later, Vaggi, having learned from Alastor that Angels could be killed and that Carmilla was the one to do it, comes to ask for Carmilla's aid in defending the hotel. Carmilla fights her and shows that she is well aware that Vaggi is an exorcist angel because of the X on her eye and the fact she wields an angelic spear. Throughout their fight, Carmilla has the upper hand, telling Vaggi how the angel is clearly fighting for vengeance when the real power comes down by fighting for the people one cares for. Realizing what Carmilla is saying, Vaggi starts thinking of her girlfriend Charlie and realizing how much she wants to help her, allowing her to even the duel and eventually win Carmilla's respect. With this, Carmilla grants the hotel her finest angelic weapons to defend against the exorcist angels. Following the battle, Carmilla is shown in her office listening to the news of the hotels victory against the angels and smiles.
Personality[]
In stark contrast to the much more eccentric and hedonistic overlords of Pentagram City, Carmilla Carmine is a no-nonsense and coldly pragmatic woman who is always blunt in her response. This attitude allows her to command a degree of respect among her fellow overlords, who she shows respect towards (Zestial in particular) and won't hesitate to stick up for should they be the subject of mockery by another. She shows an open dislike for Velvette and the Vees, regarding the trio as "smug wannabes" whose impulsiveness causes more problems than they solve. She has a pragmatic sense of restraint to her, refusing to go to all-out war with Heaven with no full proof plan and risk Heaven committing outright genocide against Hell, causing her to hide her status as the first killer of an Exorcist to avoid this outcome.
Underneath her cold exterior, Carmilla is shown to have a vulnerable and empathetic side to her character. She's shown to love her two daughters Odette and Clara, putting their protection and safety above everything else, killing an Exorcist to protect them. She also cares for Zestial, standing up for him in the face of Velvette's mockery and confiding her fears in him. She also sincerely cares for the demon sinners of Hell beyond seeing them as a mere resource for her and the overlords to build their power from, wishing to protect as many as she can from the cleanse and avoids provoking Heaven into slaughtering her people completely in response to her actions.
Carmilla appears to be largely professional, though she can lose her temper, especially when Zestial is insulted or her family is in danger. Zestial claims that losing her temper is usually very unlike her, indicating that she is usually calm and level-headed.
She cares about her daughters, willing to cross any line to protect them, even if it means killing an Exorcist while knowing there will be disastrous consequences for it. She even cares about Zestial, willing to protect him too.
She wants to avoid resorting to violence and avoid going to war, but at the same time, she'll do whatever it takes to protect her loved ones. She refuses to help Vaggi join Charlie's war against the Exorcist due to the fallout threatening her daughters' safety, but she does have a sense of pride when she demonstrates to Vaggie the weakness in the exorcist's fighting style as well as motivates Vaggi to "fight for love".
When she finally recognized that Vox's actions would condemn Hell as well as Heaven, Carmilla finally turned against him and helped Vaggi and her friends destroy the Might of Lilith.
